Black Music in America - ca. mid-1970's This tremendous educational documentary from the mid-1970's examines the priceless contributions of African-Americans to musical heritage, so closely tied to their unique history in the United States. From Africa upon slave ships captive immigrants brought with them melodies, cadences and rhythms that inarguably gave rise to music considered 'modern' today. Beginning with the genius Louis Armstrong's triumphant return to Ghana in the late 1950's, we trace the evolution of music from West Africa to the Virginia colonies of the early 1600's. Over the next 400 years, as this distinct root of American culture takes hold, incredible clips of filmed performances by Mahalia Jackson, Josephine Baker, Bessie Smith, Count Basie, Billie Holiday, Coleman Hawkins, Roy Eldridge, and Duke Ellington illustrate the black experience. I Like White/Black Music Regardless ??? So the other day I was watching a video of Robin Thicke's on youtube and was reading a comment on the video similar to this... (forgive me I can't find the comment to quote it). "Hey everyone, I really love Robin's music, regardless of what race he is." I just found the latter part of that statement rather strange. Upon further investigation this person happened to be a young African American woman. It got me wondering what compelled her to finish her comment with such a statement?? That's just not something that me or anyone I've ever known would throw in at the end of that statement. It was completely foreign to me. Not growing up around any kind of racism I've just never even felt the need to include such a statement. I like John Legend, I don't say, I like John Legend, regardless of what race he is. I either like someone or don't like someone and it's solely based on their talent. My question, kind of more geared toward the African American community, but really to all of you is, do you secretly like an artist that you are ashamed to admit you like because of their race? Perhaps you live in a geographical location where your community might give you a hard time if they knew you liked an artist of another race? The only reason I ask is because it seemed as though she was trying to justify her appreciation for Robins music despite the fact that he was white. Anyhow, post your video responses, I'd love to hear if any of you out there feel embarrassed to admit you like a musician because of their race? Is this even an issue, maybe I'm a complete idiot for analyzing her statement to this extent. Post your videos and let me know what your spin on this is? Trabalhou como engraxate, vendedor de balas e outros pequenos serviços até a maioridade, quando entrou para o serviço militar como pára-quedista. Iniciou-se na sua carreira musical como cantor de rock'n'roll, com o pseudônimo Tony Checker, no programa Hoje É Dia de Rock, da Rádio Mayrink Veiga. Depois integrou o grupo de música e dança Brasiliana, e com ele excursionou pelo exterior, passando dez anos fora do Brasil. Morou por três anos em Nova York, onde travou contato com o movimento negro e conheceu Tim Maia. Chegou a ser preso uma vez (no Brasil) por fazer o gesto típico do grupo negro americano Panteras Negras. De volta ao país, trabalhou no conjunto de Ed Lincoln e foi crooner da boate New Holyday, no Rio, onde foi descoberto pelo compositor Tibério Gaspar. Tibério e Antônio Adolfo confiaram a Tornado (acompanhado pelo Trio Ternura) a interpretação de sua composição "BR-3" no V Festival Internacional da Canção, em 1970, obtendo um sucesso avassalador. Outro grande êxito foi "Podes Crer, Amizade". Paralelamente desenvolveu carreira como ator, principalmente a partir da década de 70, quando estreou na minissérie "Jerônimo".
