Birmingham Bordesley Green NPRG and Den Haag Bordesley Green Neighbourhood Forum in Birmingham is one of four community groups experiment with new ways to control public money. They are taking part in a pilot called the Neighbourhood Performance Reward Grant or NPRG. In 2007 the Forum received £10,000 from Birmingham City Council to tackle issues of grime and how that relates to crime. They decided to tackle fly tipping, increase recycling from big rubbish collections and deal with a problem with cowboy builder flushing sewage directly into a local stream. If they hit their targets the forum will receive a further £15,000. Grand Union Canals - Bordesley Junction Bordesley Junction is at the junction of the Grand Union Canal (Birmingham and Warwick Junction Canal) with the Grand Union Canal (Warwick and Birmingham Canal) This appears to be a fairly straight forwards turn. However since we had looked neither at the map, at the guides nor at Nick's CanalPlanAC listing, the finding of a lock immediately around the turn came as somewhat of a surprise! Now, a skipper who was prepared, thoughtful and kind would have dropped his crew before the junction allowing them to cross the footbridge and have easy access to the lock. As our skipper is none of these things, our noble crew had to leap from the pointy end on to a perilous, slimy ledge and climb both the steps and a wall. At least there isn't a motorway over this junction, but once again some bugger has spoilt the elegance of the cast iron footbridge by adding a large pipe to one side of it. Garrison Flight - Salford to Bordesley Junction (time lapse) The Grand Union Canal (Birmingham and Warwick Junction Canal) runs 2.6 miles from Salford Junction South to Bordesley Junction. The canal rises 34 feet 5 inches through the Garrison Flight of five locks. For the badlands of Birmingham we had judged it safer to have the camera mounted on the blunt end. Unfortunately this gave our noble skipper ample opportunity to keep fannying about with it. Quite why I decided not the film rising in the first two locks is a mystery and the lesson is quite clear. Keep the camera on the pointy end and well away from the skipper.
