Grumman F8F Bearcat Demonstration - MONSTER Radial Sound !!! This video was taken at the 2006 airshow at Jacqueline Cochran Airport in Thermal, California. This Grumman F8F-2 Bearcat is a member of the Southern California Wing of the Commemorative Air Force and is based in Camarillo, Calif. Their Grumman Hellcat also attended the show. These aircraft attend most SoCal airshows, even the very small ones. This is at no small expense. Thank you very much! This is my favorite Grumman "Cat" and I think the video really illustrates Grumman's "smallest possible airframe built around the P&W R-2800 engine" concept. What a beast! This thing is ALL engine. This aircraft was run at a substantially higher power setting than what you would normally see at an airshow, much to the benefit of us warbird enthusiasts! Enjoy the great sights and sounds. I got a little buffeted by the prop wash and also had to wash the oil droplets off my lens filter after the engine startup. Ah, y-e-s! The town of Thermal was not so named because it is the most temperate spot in California, but is rather often the hottest place in the USA in the summer. Thermal is located approx. 33 miles southeast of Palm Springs and is in the central bowels (and I do mean bowels) of the California low desert :). However, this airshow is held in November and the weather is just delightful. This is a relatively small, predominantly warbird-oriented show and being in SoCal, many nearby warbirds attend. Definitely worth going to if you live in SoCal or are visiting! Warbirds from the Planes of Fame Museum (Chino, Calif.), the Palm Springs Air Museum and the Southern California wing of the Commemorative Air Force attend, along with modern U.S. military aircraft and other historic, privately-owned warbirds (see my other videos). But if they have definitive evidence to prove it, it wasn't presented at a press conference here Friday where they had assured the world they'd make believers out of everyone. A second round of DNA testing on the remains of a 7-foot-7, 500 pound man-ape they allege to have stumbled upon while hiking in North Georgia is still being completed, they said. Of three samples in a preliminary DNA test, one came back inconclusive, one contained traces of human DNA and one had traces of opossum DNA — probably from something the creature ate, they said. They didn't produce a body - that's in a hidden location, they said. They won't say where they found the creature and saw others. They won't let anyone but their own hand-picked scientists examine the body, and none were present on Friday. Still "we're now the best Bigfoot hunters in the world," said Matt Whitton, 31, who lives in the Atlanta suburb of Ellenwood. Whitton and his hiking buddy, 28-year-old Forest Park resident Rick Dyer, wore the promotional bigfootracker.com Web site hats to prove it. Whitton, a Clayon cop who's on disability and Dyer, a car salesman and tow truck operator, say they're not sure how they're going to make money from their alleged find; earlier they had said they wanted to run Bigfoot expeditions in the North Georgia mountains. In addition to the mixed DNA results, Tom Biscardi, Matthew Whitton and Rick Dyer showed the audience two blurry photos, one of a solitary figure in mixed hardwood forest and another of the mouth of what appeared to be the tongue and teeth of a primate. Nevertheless, fielding questions from a packed room in Palo Alto, the trio called their discovery groundbreaking and held to their claim that the animal they are currently holding in "an undisclosed location" is indeed the legendary bigfoot. "We're not bigfoot hunters originally," Whitton said. "We stumbled upon this creature. It was a stroke of luck, I can tell you that." Whitton and Dyer said they discovered the carcass when they were hiking in a forest near their home sometime in June and that it has been stored in a large freezer since then. They refused to say exactly where and when, stating only that it was in northern Georgia and that they captured video of several live animals. They said when they found the carcass they hauled it into a truck and brought it to a freezer. They then set up a Web site to offer tours into the area and made an announcement on a bigfoot enthusiast radio program. That's when Biscardi got involved, moved the animal to another location, and began contacting the media. In the week before the press conference, Whitton and Dyer spent several days sparring with skeptics and created a YouTube video where they held a stuffed bear up to the camera and repeated their claims of having found a Sasquatch. Meanwhile, Biscardi sent three samples of the carcass to biologist Curtis Nelson at the University of Minnesota for analysis. In an e-mail, Nelson told Biscardi that most of DNA segments taken from two of the samples matched human DNA. One came back as a likely match for an American opossum. Biscardi said this is likely from a stomach sample and that the creature might have eaten an opossum. He did not say why he had sampled from the stomach. Despite Biscardi's assurances that soon he would bring in scientists from Stanford University and journalists from Fox News to inspect the body, scientists are skeptical that the find is legitimate. "It's about what I expected," said Jeffrey Meldrum, a professor of anatomy and anthropology from Idaho State University in Pocatello who has studied the bigfoot phenomenon. "Today they should have produced a physical piece of the corpse, if not the corpse itself. Until they produce the body, it doesn't matter." "What they should have done is contact a reputable scientist and have it examined at a known university," said Benjamin Radford, who writes for the Skeptical Inquirer magazine and has followed bigfoot hunters for more than a decade. "Instead, this whole thing is very cloak and dagger. It all about, 'We have unnamed scientists working at an undisclosed location under armed guard.'" Meldrum said it's still remotely possible the claims are genuine, but that the group's behavior resembles that of previous hoaxes. He said that even if the genetic testing had turned up some evidence that it was bigfoot, no one can verify where the animal was found. Today's pronouncement was not Biscardi's first. In 2005 he claimed that he had captured a Sasquatch. The beast never materialized, and Biscardi said he had been swindled by a deranged attention-seeker. Radford says hoaxers make money off tours through bigfoot country and with documentary films—a motivation Biscardi doesn't discount. When asked at the press conference how much money he expects to make from his alleged discovery, Biscardi said, "As much as I possibly can." Orphaned Sea Otter Pup Abby, a California sea otter pup, is cared for by Mark Bressler, senior animal care specialist at SeaWorld San Diego. The Santa Barbara Marine Mammal Center found the otter stranded and near comatose on Jalama Beach, north of Santa Barbara, Calif., on July 21 and brought it to SeaWorld for rehabilitation. The female pup, which was estimated to be less than a week old when rescued, is being bottle-fed around the clock at SeaWorld and weighs approximately four pounds. When the young otter was rescued, she was dehydrated, hypoglycemic, having difficulty maintaining her body temperature and weighed about three pounds (sea otter pups weigh between three and five pounds at birth). At first, the otter was too weak to nurse and had to be tube-fed. Animal care specialists eventually were able to get her to drink from a bottle. The otter pup is showing signs of progress, including nursing from a bottle regularly, and maintaining a normal body temperature of 99 to 100 degrees F. The California sea otter is listed as a threatened species by U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Threats include oil spills, entanglement in fishing nets and disease. The three California sea otters now on display at SeaWorld's Rocky Point Preserve were originally stranded and rescued as part of the Monterey Bay Aquarium's Sea Otter Research and Conservation (SORAC) Program. Since 1965, SeaWorld San Diego has rescued thousands of animals and has treated as many as 475 marine mammals in one year. BIGFOOT IS DEAD!!!! *NEW PHOTO* He's reeeeeeeeeeeeal! (Or is he?) A couple of hunters in northern Georgia (the state, not the country) claim to have found a carcass of the legendary creature known as Bigfoot (or Sasquatch, if you prefer). The two hunters teamed up with a fellow named Tom Biscardi, head of a group called Searching for Bigfoot; they plan to hold a press conference on Friday in Palo Alto, Calif., to show off DNA evidence and photos--but not the body itself. That's apparently being kept under wraps. (Yeah, right.) Biscardi's Web site, searchingforbigfoot.com, proceeded to crash under bandwidth pressures. According to a press release, the creature: • Stands 7-feet-7-inches tall. • Weighs more than 500 pounds. • Looks part human and part ape-like. • Is male. • Has reddish hair and blackish-gray eyes. • Has two arms and two legs, and five fingers on each hand and five toes on each foot. • Has flat feet that are similar to human feet. • Has a footprint that is 16.75 inches long and 5.75 inches wide at the heel. • Has hands that are 11.75 inches long from the palm to the tip of the middle finger and are 6.25 inches wide. • Walks upright. (Several of them apparently were seen on the day the body was found.) • Has teeth that are more human-like than ape-like. • Has been undergoing DNA testing. This summer has filled quite the appetite for strange creatures in the news, fueled by photos of the "Montauk Monster," a strange carcass that washed ashore in eastern Long Island, New York. That creature, which earned plenty of headlines on Gawker and other New York-centric blogs, has been shakily confirmed as a viral marketing stunt. Earlier this week, a Texas man claimed to have videotaped a legendary creature called the Chupacabra, but the video really just looks like a weird dog. The two amateur Bigfoot hunters who claim to have found the body in Georgia, Matthew Whitton and Rick Dyer, are a cop and a former corrections officer, respectively. Biscardi, according to LiveScience, has been responsible for at least one Bigfoot hoax before, leading many to take this with an even bigger grain of salt than they normally would.
