[Channel 4 News] Biggest Tibet protests in 20 years 2008.03.14 By Lindsey Hilsum: "Protests led by Buddhist monks enter their third day, in the biggest show of defiance in Tibet for more than 20 years. Cars and shops have been set ablaze in the Tibetan capital Lhasa amid demands for independence from China. Reports say Chinese police have fired on protestors, leaving at least two people dead. One witness said around 400 demonstrators had been confronted by a thousand riot police as they threw rocks and set fire to cars and buses. The Dalai Lama has denied Chinese allegations that he had masterminded the unrest." [Channel 4 News] China's clampdown on YouTube Tacky. Distasteful. But would you call the kind of videos on sites like YouTube "degenerate"? That's what the Chinese government thinks. Beijing is to crack down on video sharing websites. But many fear that this isn't the kind of material that is worrying the Chinese. Videos including footage from the Tiananmen Square massacre in 1989 is already banned in China. And to further tighten up the rules, from the end of this month, only state owned video sharing sites will be allowed in China. China already has one of the most tightly controlled internet services in the world. So why do they need to insist on total state ownership of the sites? Matt Whitticase, from the Free Tibet campaign, joined More4 News to discuss the issue. Subway Challenge: Channel 4 -T4 Homemade Channel 4 shows the Subway Challenge on T4 Homemade. Following the appearance of the original Subway Challenge video on YouTube, Princess Productions, working for Channel 4, came to Glasgow to redo the Subway Challenge in quality suitable for TV. The producers initially insisted that the Challenge would be shot in parts and then edited together. We listened to this advice and, deciding that that wasn't in the spirit of the whole thing, ignored it completely. The challenge was once again shot in one take. Colin did actually do it and on the first attempt! The footage from above ground was recorded after the run and was edited in. [Channel 4 News] China pollution KOs marathon bid 2008.03.10 By Lucy Manning: "Ethiopia's marathon world record holder Haile Gebrselassie blames pollution for his decision not to run in the Beijing Olympics marathon. He's the world record holder - but Haile Gebrselassie won't be running the marathon in this summer's Olympic games. The Ethiopian runner, who suffers from asthma, said the massive pollution in China was a threat to his health. Gerbselassie said he would compete in the 10,000 metre event instead. He's not the only runner to express worries about China's climate problem. Britain's Paula Radcliffe has called in pollution experts to help her Olympic plans." 9/11 The falling man [pr0x] (new DL links!!) September 11 2001 was a day of many incredible and shocking stories: stories of survivors, stories of heroes. But there was one story that people didn't want to face. The story of the people who began to jump from the World Trade Center just minutes after the first plane hit. Their images were caught on videotape and in photographs, but soon they were never seen again, as if they had never existed. Among those pictures is one of the most unforgettable images from 9/11 - a photograph of a falling man, frozen in mid air, his body perfectly parallel with the twin towers of the World Trade Center. Thank you for all the responses :) and im sorry for everyone that messages me about how they were involved/knew someone that was in the towers. i hope you all can move on and try to appreciate life for how great it really is.
