Patty and Molly introduction - chimpanzees After a four month "training" process, by the staff at the Kansas City Zoo, involving a newborn chimpanzee and a 36 year old female (unrelated to the infant), the introduction took place. They were together permanently after this introduction. You first see the doors between the two opening and Molly starts screaming. That was one of the the hardest moments of my life. We really bonded with this little one and it would have been hard to see her hurt, or worse, die. You can see Patty trying to comfort her from the very first moment. Patty kind of left her alone a bit yet still closely watched her every move. After a short while (10-15 minutes) Molly started crawling over toward Partty. Patty picks up an elephant stuffed animal and tried to gently "play" with Molly. After a bit, Molly calmed down to the point that Patty could groom her. After about (45 minutes (could have been longer but time just dragged on during that stressful time), all was calm and we were feeding Molly through the cage mesh. Patty just stayed in the middle of the enclosure and wasn't stressed by us feeding Molly. The other chimpanzee video on this site shows a bit of the training that we did in order to get this female/infant ready for this introduction. Tags: chimpanzee zoo introductions |

Chimpanzees at NC Zoo Seeing the chimpanzees was one of my favorite things at the North Carolina Zoo. They are our closest relatives. We brought back some video for you to check out (we're still learning). I read Jane Goodall's book, The Chimpanzees I Love. She has an amazing story to tell. She started studying chimps in Tanzania in 1960. Chimps are endangered, and could be extinct in the wild within 15 years! What are we doing to our planet? Do you think chimpanzees are worth saving? Please spread the word and do something to help. http://mossysanimals.blogspot.com/ Tags: chimps chimpanzee NC Zoo endangered animals mossys |

Uganda fights to save chimpanzees - 09 Jul 08 They can attract up to $30,000 in the international trade for pets. So it is no surprise that Uganda's dwindling chimpanzee population remains a target for illegal traders. Despite bans on trading in primates, at least 5,000 are poached annually. But as Al Jazeera's Sophie Jackson reports, one chimpanzee sanctuary in Uganda is doing its best to rehabilitate them. Tags: Al Jazeera English Sophie Jackson chimpanzee Uganda rehabilitate 000 |

Johnny Clegg at Work - Jane Goodall's 'Wild Chimpanzees' Making of the Music "Dr. Jane Goodall's legendary work with the chimpanzees of Tanzania's Gombe Stream National Park will be the subject of a remarkable giant screen film co-produced by the Science Museum of Minnesota, Science North, and Discovery Place, Inc. Jane Goodall's Wild Chimpanzees will take viewers on an extraordinary trip deep into Gombe and across four decades of research to experience the world of the chimpanzee as they've never seen it before." "The unique, energetic music of Jane Goodall's Wild Chimpanzees is the work of English-born singer/guitarist Johnny Clegg. Drawing from his experiences growing up in the turmoil of South Africa, Clegg writes lyrics and music that tell stories of cultural values and needs. Born in Manchester, England in the 1950s, Johnny Clegg's family relocated to South Africa where he grew up being influenced by Zulu street musicians. As Clegg grew older, his interest in the Zulu culture -- especially the dance and music -- also grew. As a young man in the mid 1970s, Clegg teamed up with Sipho Mchunu to form South Africa's first multi-racial band, Jujuka. Melding the predominant Zulu sound with the Celtic callings from Clegg's origins, Jujuka released Scatterlings of Africa, a song whose newly recorded version is featured in Jane Goodall's Wild Chimpanzees. Apartheid government forced the separation of Jujuka in 1986, and Clegg went out in search of a new band. Clegg formed Savuka, a highly popular multi-racial Zulu dance group, after Jujuka's demise. With their incredibly infectious dance music, Savuka have become well known and loved the world over. They have gone gold with their music in Belgium, Switzerland, France and New Zealand. Savuka's debut album, titled Third World Child, sold more than two million copies. Following their second album, Shadow Man, the band embarked on a world tour, opening shows for Steve Winwood in the United States and George Michael in Canada. Savuka reached its peak with its fourth album, Heat, Dust and Dreams, which was nominated for a Grammy in the Best World Music category and received a Billboard music award as Best World Music Album."
