Dietrich Buxtehude: suite in C-Major on clavichord Last year I played this suite on harpsichord (removed it again) and I was wondering how it would sound on clavichord. The clavichord was a very important and popular instrument in the northern countries, especially in Germany. better quality: http://www.vimeo.com/1356647 The Suite in C-Major which is presented here, is part of a collection in a book by the Danish family Ryge (19 suites). Johan Christian Ryge (1688-1758) was choirmaster at the cathedral of Roskilde. The Works are written in German organtablature in this book. Also Works by Pachelbel and Reinken are in the collection of the Ryge-family book. I play from an edition by Emilius Bangert, who was in 1941 choirmaster at the Roskilde cathedral.. Dieterich Buxtehude (c. 1637 -- 9 May 1707) was a German-Danish organist and lutenist, was a highly regarded composer of the Baroque period. Probably born in a place now belonging to Sweden, but then to Denmark. From 1668 he was an organist at the Marienkirche in Lübeck. He was a model for the careers of later Baroque masters such as George Frideric Handel, Johann Mattheson, Georg Philipp Telemann and Johann Sebastian Bach. He offered his position in Lübeck to Handel and Mattheson but stipulated that the organist who ascended to it must marry his eldest daughter, Anna Margareta. Both Handel and Mattheson turned the offer down and left the day after their arrival. In 1705, J.S. Bach, then a young man twenty years old, walked from Arnstadt to Lübeck, a distance of more than 400 kilometers, and stayed nearly three months to hear the Abendmusik, meet the pre-eminent Lübeck organist, hear him play, and as Bach explained "to comprehend one thing and another about his art. ernst stolz clavichord Tags: Buxtehude clavichord harpsichord suite Lübeck |

My Lady Nevells ground by William Byrd (Clavichord) I was asked to put back my video with fragments of the " My Lady Nevells Ground". I made a new recording, this time complete, on clavichord. better quality: http://www.vimeo.com/1250895 The clavichord was very popular in Germany and other northern countries, during the seventeenth and eighteenth century. But there must have been plenty of them in England too. We have this remark by Mattheson (Critica Musica, 1722): When it is said that clavichords are to be found nowhere but in Germany, and then, that a clavichord has been heard in England in the home of a German organist, then [one must conclude that] there must be clavichords in England, at least among the Germans there (of which there are quite a few now). There are people living here in Hamburg who each year send as many clavichords as they can make to England, Spain, Holland, etc. So where are these clavichords? The term Virginal music is in a way misleading. All kind of keyboard music is meant. My Ladye Nevells Booke is a compilation of 42 pieces for keyboard. Together with the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book, one of the most important collections of keyboard music of the English renaissance. Copied by John Baldwin, one of the most famous musical scribes and calligraphers of the day, the pieces seem to have been selected, organized and even edited and corrected by Byrd himself. Ryan Layne Whitney (C.P.E. Bach: "Farewell" on clavichord) C.P.E. Bach: "Farewell to My Silbermann Clavichord" (Abschied vom Silbermannschen Clavier, in einem Rondeaux), W. 66 (on Sperrhake clavichord). In 1781 C.P.E. Bach sold his favorite Silbermann clavichord to Dietrich Ewald von Grotthuß, a nobleman from Lithuania, and wrote this affecting piece as a farewell to his instrument---perhaps slightly tongue-in-cheek? It is always a little hard to tell when C.P.E. Bach was being serious! At any rate, the piece demonstrates the expressive style that C.P.E. was known for, and the "bebung" (vibrato) is even specifically notated by three horizontal dots with a slur above them over certain notes. (When you see my hand shaking, I hope you can hear the bebung, and don't suppose that I am having a fit of nerves.) This is a more difficult piece to pull off than it might seem, and I don't think I have done it justice. See Grotthuß's amusing musical response to this at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K9YM6rR5KiY. early Dutch clavichord music: Rosemont Monumenta Musica Neerlandica from a mansucript, found in the leningrad Library of the Academy of Sciences, written around 1650: Rosemont (anonymous) The book originated in Germany, was finished by a Dutchman. Some pieces atributed to Sweelinck are to be found, some pieces with English titles and this Rosemont. Two english settings are known of this song. (See Tower Hill by Farneby, in the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book).. Rosemont was like Amarillis, a common figure in Dutch pastoral lyric of this period. Quirinus van Blankenburg Prélude on Clavichord Monumenta Musica Neerlandica clavichord by Dick Verwolf http://home.wanadoo.nl/verwolf/dickverwolf.html Quirinus an Blankenburg was a composer and organist, who also lived in the Hague. He was also a theoretician, for example on tunigs, and wrote "Elementa musica". He must have been a notable person. (1654-1739). The prelude is one of his oldest compositions, to be found in a manuscript in the London British Library (Babell Manuscript 1702).
