COLD STEEL JAPANESE WARRIOR O KATANA The Cold Steel Company prides itself on using traditional parts and fittings for its swords forged by traditional Eastern swordsmiths. This dedication to authenticity along with the sheer power and strength of their blades makes Cold Steel swords extremely desirable to collectors.Cold Steel swords and knives are known for their toughness. For instance, a knife in their Tanto series has been tested by being repeatedly thrust through a car door with no damage suffered by the tip of the blade. To achieve this power without breaking or marring Cold Steel uses a steel lamination process known as San Mai III. "San Mai" means, "three layers" and refers to the fact that laminated sword construction can allow various grades (or layers) of steel to be combined in a single blade. Combining layers in this way allows for maximum flexibility (on outside layers of the blade so it won't shatter when struck in battle) with strength (at the blade's core with a higher carbon steel). Many Cold Steel blades are also made from Carbon V, a high carbon, low alloy cutlery grade steel. The quality of Carbon V makes it extremely strong due to a smelting process which involves Cold Steel metallurgists maintaining an exact microstructure of the steel. After smelting, every shipment is checked for structural quality, cleanliness and chemical content before being optimized for grain flow along the length of the blade. Finally, a unique heat treating process (a highly guarded trade secret) is applied to every blade, ensuring a durability and beauty unmatched in many of Cold Steel's rivals.Cold Steel swords are very popular for functional purposes (in the dojo) or for test cutting (an ancient practice known as tamashigeri where a sword's quality was tested by cutting the bodies of corpses or criminals—straw mats or bamboo are used today). The quality of the steel in their blades denotes a high carbon content (as in the Tanto series) versus stainless steel which can be attractive to look at but does not have the durability needed to withstand the rigors of battle. 88BOK Weight: 48 oz. Cold Steel Trailmaster: Wilderness Perfection At least as of 2008, I haven't found a better survival blade than the CS Trailmaster. Sure it's a big chunk of steel (23.5 oz for Carbon 5/SK-5 versions, 22 oz San Mai III) but for some wilderness trips I've found that it is "good weight." Nothing you can backpack with can split big logs and shear limbs (both varieties) as good as a Trailmaster. A downside though would be the leather sheath and the lack of QD capabilities for attachment. But at it's sub $100 price, the non-stainless Trailmaster rules. The stainless San Mai III is no less efficient but it is expensive. It would be best suited to the wetter environments where keeping the regular version rust free would be impossible. Also the San Mai version comes with the more preferable nylon sheath that's lighter and water immune. The extra length of the 9 1/2 blade (vs 7" for Recon Scout) makes for more efficient wood splitting, albeit at a four ounce weight penalty. And like the RS, it's 5/16' thick wedge-like, flat ground blade far surpasses other designs for this use. If your system and YOU can handle the extra weight you'll be glad to have them once you get on site... they have no peer in these types of survival tasks. The Tsuba (guard), Fuchi (collar), and Kashira (pommel), are expertly made and finely crafted in nickel-silver brass. The Habaki (blade collar) is hand made out of nickel-silver brass and each hilt is covered in Samé (ray skin) and tightly wrapped in the traditional style with black silk cord. A beautiful Menuki (a small ornamental sculpture inserted between the ray skin and the cord wrappings on the handle) enhances the swords aesthetic appearance and makes for a sword that is as traditional looking as we can possibly make it. All feature fully sharpened 1055 carbon steel blades, each heat treated to a spring temper. The blade surface is then given a careful polish by hand, with a distinctive mirror polish applied to the fuller (blood groove). Cold Steel 12" Bowie (Machete) Review I don't want to cover just the expensive uber-cool blades. We'll go everywhere. Here I discuss the great value that the Cold Steel 12" Bowie knife represents. Even at just $20 it's a contender in the survival/combat knife category. Having good steel, a descent sheath, good handle, and reasonable weight you should own at least two. Just remember to get it sharpened properly first! ADD: The 12" Bowie may lack some hacking capability (in the woods) due to its lighter blade too. Didn't mention that. Cold Steel Spike knives: Better than a shiv but not much Yes CS Spikes are affordable and there are quality-made. But like I say in the video, the neck carry option is fraught with some serious drawbacks you need to consider. Kinda' like how you can trap the sheathed blade underneath your grounded body in a defensive scuffle. I interweave some of this philosophy into the review as I cover the Spike series. The CS Spike series has enlarged to include some much improved designs (Tokyo, Bowie, and Scimitar Spikes are good improvements) that might offer some greater utility besides just pure stabbing capability. However these circa 2004 blades I show are the The Spike and Tanto versions. Like the rest, they suffer from tiny, hard-to-grasp, thin handles that could allow the hand forward in a thrust attack. They do offer great strength, excellent penetration, and a relatively lightweight 3.5 oz. Their neck sheaths include a blackened bead chain. If a under-the-shirt knife is your only viable backup option and the budget is tight, maybe the CS Spikes are good choice. But be advised these inexpensive blades are primarily stabbers and their handles are poorly suited for that task. Cold Steel AK-47: Masculinity Assured This is a chunky and heavy tactical folder. These two examples have seen some hard use and show some interesting battle scars. Upsides are fast deployment, big handles with impact capabilities (using the extended Grivory butt), good steel, feels great in the hand, and it has a tractable grip. Downsides are a loose lockup (over time apparently), heavier weight (7 oz), and too short of a blade for this weight and type of defensive folder. Better options might include the BM 710, BM Dejavoo, or Extra Large CS Voyager is you want or need more defensive reach. But this knife does make a statement and might reassure your buddies that indeed you are a man. Cold Steel Kobun Tanto: Light Speed A great choice as an LBE carry knife for CQB operations. The Kobun weights in, sheath and all, at an outstandingly light 6.8 oz. That's an amazing weight for a knife that has an effective defensive blade of five inches. That svelte weight along with its compact form factor makes the Kobun an excellent choice for troops engaged in vehicle operations; it's a forgettable carry package that won't get in the way. Ideal for vertical carry when attached with 550 cord or ranger rubber bands, the plastic sheath is well executed. However on my versions I have found it necessary to tighten up the retention which I address in the video. This one comes in AUS8 steel which is an excellent choice. And its tanto blade is highly functional for BOTH utility and defensive tasks. The thin and short handle with its minimal Kraton crossguard is a downside but a necessary compromise at this weight. Train with this knife, hold it tight, and practice your draw before you deploy and you with have an excellent backup weapon for your ops. For the meager cost and weight, this is A LOT of blade.
