Varnishing Your Wet Plate Collodion Images I walk through the process of varnishing a black glass Ambrotype. Not a high "wow-factor" here, but some practical knowledge needed in the process. It's very important that you varnish your wet plate images - they damage and tarnish easily - believe me! Tags: wet plate collodion varnishing photography 19th Century |

Will and Matt Pour a Plate with Collodion During the Wet Plate Collodion workshop at the Photographers' Formulary in Condon, Montana, Will Dunniway demonstrates and Matthew Callow practices pouring a glass plate. It's a trick to do it well, as Will shows us in this 5:30 minute movie. A well covered plate is the key to a good glass negative or a striking tintype. How To Do Jokers's Makeup A How To on Joker's makeup. You guys asked me for it (Some of you demanded) and here it is! This isn't exact because I'm not the actual person who did Heath's makeup. And Heath has beautifully lined skin that makes it perfect for having those 'wrinkles' in the makeup. I do not have that luxury. This is for us poor people. SONG: Why So Serious? The Dark Knight Soundtrack. Go buy it today! EDIT: Completely forgot to add this in. Joker has a scar on his lip, going to mid-chin. I use Rigid Collodion for that. I didn't add it to the video because I will only use that stuff if I have a mirror. It can be toxic! If you choose to use Rigid Collodion for scarring, please read up on the product FIRST and remember to get the special remover for it as well. Do not try to peal that stuff off your skin! Wayne Pierce, the Company Photographer Retired fireman, Wayne Pierce, reinvented himself as "Company Photographer" for a Civil War re-enactment group. He discovered the 19th Century photographic process, Wet Plate Collodion, which had been used by Matthew B. Brady, among others, to record the horrors of America's War Between the States. Since then, Wayne has built a Victorian studio in his backyard, and in this video gives you a tour of a unique corner of his world. Making a Clear Glass Positive aka "Soft Negative" for DOP This shows me walking through the process of making a positive image on clear glass - traditionally, this would be called an Ambrotype - here, however, I overexposed it a little bit to get a "soft negative" or a negative that can be used with modern silver paper (printing). The mind twister is that it's still a positive when placed against a black background but too thin to be called a collodion negative (to be printed on POP-Albumen/Salt). Are you confused yet? *grin* Tags: wet plate collodion making "soft negative" an Ambrotype on clear glass. photography 19th Century |

The Manual Project These portraits are images of hands and they reflect the personality and the life of the subject. Lifestyle, work habits and sensitivity are revealed. Without the distraction of faces these images of hands are absolutely honest and deeply perceptive portraits. M A N U A L -- The personalities of Hands "To see a world in a grain of sand, and a heaven in a wildflower, Hold infinity in the palm of your hand, and eternity in an hour." William Blake The eyes may be the windows of the soul - but hands reveal our humanity. There are chakrahs in our hands, Jesus had nail holes in his palms and a sign of worship is to stand with your palms raised. Fortune tellers read palms. Handwriting is analyzed to expose deep secrets. Man's thumbs differentiate humans from lower species. Our hands are one of our most perceptive senses and still are used as a tool and a weapon, they can caress or crush. Hands build weapons yet heal the sick. Hands contain our absolute legal identities in the fingerprints. We control our world with our hands, and our hands are shaped by our world. We reach out with our hands and we sense the physical world with our hands. I collaborate with my subjects to expose their hands and their personalities. Using 19th century collodion wet plate photography I photograph their dominant hand, then we work together to make a photogram of their palm print. Combining these two images together with the person's handwriting, I create one portrait of the subject. Both techniques have technical aspects which reveal more than conventional photography. The collodion plate is sensitive only to blue light, creating tonalities completely changed from how our eyes perceive light. The photograms reveal the texture and pressure of the hand on the paper, so the print is truly hand-made.
