Jeremy Scahill Testifies on Defense Contracting, 5.10.2007 There are over 120,000 private contractors currently deployed in Iraq and yesterday, a House panel put some of the harshest criticisms of this privatization of war into the congressional record for the first time. The House Appropriations subcommittee on defense held a hearing on Thursday about defense contracting. Testifying before the panel was journalist Jeremy Scahill and filmmaker Robert Greenwald. Jeremy is a Democracy Now! correspondent and an investigative reporter for The Nation magazine. He is author of the book "Blackwater: The Rise of the World's Most Powerful Mercenary Army." In his opening remarks, he spoke about the lack of oversight of the tens of thousands of contractors deployed in Iraq. Tags: Blackwater mercenary contractors Iraq Erik Prince Scahill profiteers |

What Life Factors Contribute to Contracting HIV? In this unscripted interview, Dr. Kuhn discusses the factors patients say contributed to their contracting HIV. Patients have cited rejection by their families, low self-esteem, longing for love, disconnection from their religious community, alienation from God, and boredom as factors contributing to contracting HIV. Recreational use of Viagra and crystal methamphetamine may contribute to further transmission after becoming HIV positive. She also discusses how physicians can more fully contribute to their patients' well-being by talking with them about their lives as a whole and their value as a human being instead of just narrowly focusing on specific symptoms, conditions, and medications. I'm Over 50. Should I Worry About HIV? Older individuals need to be just as careful to avoid contracting HIV as younger people do. People often assume that older adults don't need to worry about HIV. Few people realize that almost one in six new HIV/AIDS diagnoses in America are in people age 50 and older. Older people have many of the same risk factors as younger people. HIV transmission through injection drug use accounts for more than 16% of AIDS cases among persons aged 50 and older. Since post-menopausal women no longer need to worry about preventing unwanted pregnancies, they may not use condoms. In reality, they are at risk for HIV and need to use condoms to prevent contracting sexually transmitted diseases. The development of medications for erectile dysfunction such as Viagra has meant that many older men who previously were unable to have sex are now able to be sexually active again. Older people may be less likely to receive education on HIV prevention, education, and testing. Some Ways You Can Contract HIV and the Risk of Each One People often ask us which sexual practices have a relatively higher risk of HIV transmission and which have a relatively lower risk. This video discusses the estimated risk of HIV transmission for mother-to-child transmission, needle sharing, and for some common sexual practices including anal sex, vaginal sex, and oral sex on men and women. These statistics are just estimates based on the currently available scientific information. The risk of contracting HIV from a partner will also vary at different times during their infection. A person who has contracted HIV is most infectious shortly after they have acquired the virus, known as primary HIV infection. The cited figures here are estimated average risks, and risk of transmitting HIV can be increased or decreased by many other factors. For example, for sexual contact, if either or both partners have other sexually transmitted diseases, the risk of HIV transmission will be increased. Remember, the averages won't help you if you're the one who becomes infected. For example, unprotected insertive oral sex on a man may carry an estimated risk of 1 chance of HIV transmission in 20,000, but if you're the one who gets infected, HIV transmission is still 100% for you. These statistics are not a license to engage in unprotected sex. Rather, they will hopefully help people to realize that all of the sexual practices we've listed carry some risk of HIV transmission, so it's vital if you're sexually active to always practice safer sex techniques such as the use of condoms. Baby boy Kiron : the two-head baby A baby boy born with two heads in Bangladesh has been placed under national police protection because of the curiosity his birth has caused among thousands of locals. The boy, named Kiron and weighing 12 lbs 1 oz, was born by Cesarean section on Monday August 25, 2008 at a clinic in Keshobpur, 85 miles from the capital, Dhaka. But an estimated 150,000 people from the region descended on the clinic to try to catch sight of the boy so he was moved to a larger hospital. Police are now mounting a round-the-clock operation to protect him and his family from intrusion. Dr Mohamad Abdul Bari, his mother's gynecologist, said: "He has one stomach and he is eating normally with his two mouths. He has one genital organ and a full set of limbs. "He was born from one embryo but there was a developmental anomaly." The clinic had been unable to determine whether the baby had one or two sets of vital organs, Dr Bari said. Kiron's life was not in immediate danger but he and his 22-year-old mother were moved to the hospital in the nearby city of Jessore city because of the large crowds that had gathered at the clinic, the doctor said. "Around 150,000 people gathered yesterday from different areas. It became tough for us to care for the baby. "We called police to tackle the situation and they are guarding the hospital in Jessore as well," he said. The Samakal newspaper said that many well-wishers had left money for the baby's family. Photo: AFP [ 2 headed baby ] UPDATE [ 27 AUGUST 2008 ]: DHAKA, Bangladesh (UPI) - A baby born with two heads has died in Bangladesh after contracting a fever and suffering breathing difficulties, The Mirror said Thursday. The British newspaper said the infant boy, who had been named Kiron, lived three days. During his short time at his parent's home, the child was under police protection as 150,000 people mobbed a Bangladesh clinic to see the newborn. Those who flocked to the clinic suspected the child may have been a god due to his physical deformity, the Mirror said. The newspaper said the child's parents had been unable to send their son to the Bangladesh capital of Dhaka for additional treatment that doctors at the clinic had recommended. Availability This is key in the world of contracting make sure you get to the first interview they offer to make sure you get seen If you cannot make it suggest an initial telephone interview. Know when you are available to start a contract, if they need someone quick try and be flexible, even if you offer your service part time to start with. The Agency Make sure you use respected agencies. Research on the agencies you deal to make sure they will be working in the interest of both you and the employer. Try and build up a relationship with them, after all they will be recommending you so the more they know about you the better. References Always keep your references up to date Ensure your agencies have copies of your references so they can be used immediately. Basically, whether the company's dress code is formal or casual, make an effort to look presentable and well groomed. It matters. Try to keep your answers down to 60 seconds. You don't want to be monosyllabic, but long-winded replies will make the employer lose interest and you might lose your own thread. Listen carefully and answer questions directly. If you are unclear about a question, ask the interviewer to clarify. Be prepared to discuss how what you've done in the past will affect how you'll perform in a future role. Give examples that demonstrate your value. Ask questions. Sharp questions will show that you are proactive and want to make sure that this company is the right place for you. US Air Force $40 billion contract goes to Airbus! The U.S. Air Force, in a stunning decision against Boeing, awarded a $40 billion contract for aerial refueling tankers Friday to a partnership between Northrop Grumman and the European parent of Airbus, putting a critical military contract partly into the hands of a foreign company. The contract, one of the largest at the Pentagon, has the potential to grow to $100 billion. It is also a sign of the growing influence of foreign suppliers within the Pentagon and breaks a decades-long relationship with Boeing, which built the bulk of the existing tanker fleet and fought hard to land the new contract. "This isn't an upset," said Loren Thompson, a military analyst at the Lexington Institute, a Washington-area research group. "It's an earthquake." Under the contract, Northrop and the parent of Airbus, European Aeronautic Defense & Space, or EADS, would build a fleet of 179 planes, based on the existing Airbus 330, to provide in-air refueling to military aircraft, from fighter jets to cargo planes. It gives a huge lift to EADS, whose commercial aviation program has suffered a number of setbacks in recent years. While final assembly of the craft would take place at an Airbus plant near Mobile, Alabama, parts would come from suppliers across the globe. Today in Business with Reuters U.S. lost 63,000 jobs in February European and Asian markets fall on credit fears Carlyle fund considering 'all options' At a news conference, air force officials said the creation of domestic jobs was not a factor in the decision. In response to questions about possible negative reaction to the deal in Congress, General Arthur Lichte, head of the air force's air mobility command, said, "This will be an American tanker, flown by American airmen with an American flag on its tail and, every day, it will be saving American lives." Reaction from some in Congress, however, was swift. "We are outraged that this decision taps European Airbus and its foreign workers to provide a tanker to our American military," the delegation from Washington State said in a joint statement. Boeing planes are assembled outside Seattle. "This is a blow to the American aerospace industry, American workers and America's men and women in uniform." For its part, Boeing, which had been considered the strong favorite to retain the contract, said it was "very disappointed" in the outcome. But it did not say whether it would file a formal protest - something General Michael Moseley, chief of staff of the air force, has said he hopes the losing bidder will not do because it would only further delay the tanker replacement program. In its statement, Boeing said, "We believe that we offered the air force the best value and lowest risk tanker for its mission." The company added that only after a debriefing by the Pentagon would the company "make a decision concerning our possible options, keeping in mind at all times the impact to the warfighter and the nation." A Boeing victory was considered so certain that many Wall Street analysts had already factored the contract into their economic forecasts for the company and led one senator, Kay Bailey Hutchison, Republican of Texas, to prematurely send out a press release praising Boeing for its victory. The air force decision is also a surprise ending to a protracted contracting process that went on for nearly a decade and became mired in scandal and international politics. Senator John McCain, the presumptive Republican presidential candidate, had scuttled an earlier attempt by the air force to award the contract to Boeing, opening the door for the Northrop-Airbus bid. McCain's campaign spokeswoman referred calls to his Senate office, which could not be reached for comment. Norm Dicks, a Washington Democrat who is a member of the House Appropriations Committee Defense Subcommittee, said he was attending an anticipated victory party at Boeing's Washington headquarters when the mood suddenly darkened. "Here we are in the middle of a recession and we give this to Airbus?" Dicks added. "That is not going to go down well." Ronald Sugar, the chief executive of Northrop Grumman, said in a telephone interview that he expected members of Congress would have a "variety of views" depending on whether their districts would be gaining or losing jobs under the deal. He said that 60 percent of the content of the new tanker would come from the United States and that the contract would create 2,000 jobs in Mobile and 25,000 overall in the United States. "This is more about the capability that we will give to the kids fighting the wars and the cost to the taxpayer," he said. Restore The West - Christian Faith It is only fitting that I begin by addressing what has been the most vicious and devastating attack on Western Civilization over the past century: that is the concentrated efforts to de-Christianize our people through media manipulation and the promotion of overt anti-Christian bigotry. Left-wing organizations have learned how to use our legislative and judicial systems against us. They've secretly worked hard for decades to get sympathetic judges on the benches and are now engaged in a systematic effort to remove any vestiges of Christianity from the public square. Their efforts have resulted in the forced removal of countless Christian monuments from parks, memorials, and other publicly-owned properties, the suppression of religious speech in our schools and government institutions, and even outright hostility to Christianity in our public education systems. These Marxist organizations have also devised clever means to use our government and tax dollars against us to diminish the influence of Christianity while at the same time bolstering that of Islam and other foreign religions. Legislation has been passed in many Western nations restricting religious liberty and speech specifically to protect "minority religions" from any criticism. We've seen men arrested in Australia for daring to criticize Islam. So-called "Religious Tolerance" legislation is being used to protect and foster the growth of Islam in Western nations. A new brand of militant Atheism is also on the rise which seeks to deconvert Christians and promote leftist values and ideology among our people. While these atheists and Muslims seemingly have little in common, they both share the same goal of remaking Western Civilization in their own image, and will use one another when the opportunity arises in order to help diminish the influence of Christianity in our societies. Both of these groups desire ultimately to destroy Christianity in the West, but fear not, my friends. For Christianity is an anvil that has worn out many a hammer because it is no Fairy-Tale religion, but is grounded in objective Historical reality. However, we should all be concerned by these efforts to attack our Faith and culture. Make no mistake, there is a direct correlation between the decline of Christian Faith in our nations and the development of the many and diverse problems before us today. Crime, drug use, promiscuity and neglect of family life... how could anyone see these as positive contributions to our societies? Yet, as Christian faith diminishes, these sorry vices become more and more prevalent. In those days when sons and daughters were taught right from wrong, the desire of a young woman was to stay pure and chaste, to marry at a young age, and join her husband in raising a healthy and happy family, and the desire of a young man was to be a father and to teach his sons those same virtues that he was taught in his youth. When such goals were prevalent among our nations' people, there was simply no need to be concerned about demographic trends. The future was secure because our people were following the will of a loving Creator who said, be fruitful and multiply. Unfortunately, virtue is being replaced in our modern culture with total and complete degeneracy. Instead of being taught Christian virtue, Children in the West are bombarded with every sort of immorality in music, television, movies, even in their schools. It's criminal that so many children are now instilled with such a degenerate view of sexuality from the music they listen to, the movies they see, and the outright pornography they're exposed to on a daily basis. This filth has become so overwhelmingly prevalent on the internet and often children are the primary targets of these pornographers because they believe that if they get them addicted early enough, they will have a customer for life for their sick and depraved trade. With such childhood influences, is it any wonder that our people are marrying less, divorcing more, and having fewer children of their own? There is no surer way to destroy a people than to distort their understanding of sexuality. Instead of a gift for use within the bond of marriage to unite a husband and wife, and make possible the creation of a family, if sexuality is seen as purely a selfish endeavor, it isn't long before marriage is no longer even desired and pregnancy is looked at as little better than contracting a sexually transmitted disease. It is estimated that in the previous century, Europeans and those of European descent around the world comprised nearly 30% of the Global population. Today, we make up roughly half of that. Some estimates indicate that by the end of this century we will comprise less than 2% of the Global population. We are on a fast track to extinction and we have only ourselves to blame. Did anyone really believe that such actions would be without consequence? ... Ronaldinho vs Singapore by antooz Ronaldo de Assis Moreira was born in Porto Alegre, a large city in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. His mother, Miguelina, is a former salesperson who studied to become a nurse. His father, João, was a shipyard worker and footballer for local club Esporte Clube Cruzeiro (not to be confused with Cruzeiro EC),[5] and suffered a fatal heart attack when Ronaldo was eight. After Ronaldo's older brother, Roberto, signed with Grêmio, the family moved to a more affluent home in Porto Alegre, which was a gift from Gremio to convince Roberto to stay at the club. Roberto's career was ultimately cut short by injury. Ronaldo's football skills began to blossom at an early age, and he was first given the nickname Ronaldinho because he was often the youngest and the smallest player in youth club matches.[6] He developed an interest in futsal and beach football, which later expanded to organized football, and his first brush with the media came at the age of thirteen, when he scored all 23 goals in a 23-0 victory against a local team.[7] Ronaldinho was identified as a rising star at the Egypt 1997 under-17 world championship, in which he scored two goals on penalty kicks.[8][9] Today Roberto acts as Ronaldinho's manager, while his sister, Deisi, works as his press coordinator.[10][11] Ronaldinho became a father for the first time on February 25, 2005, after Brazilian dancer Janaína Mendes gave birth to their son, who was named João after Ronaldinho's father On July 19, 2003, FC Barcelona acquired Ronaldinho for £21 million.[16] Originally, Barcelona president Joan Laporta had promised to bring David Beckham to the club, but following his transfer to Real Madrid, Barcelona entered the running for Ronaldinho and outbid Manchester United for his signature. He made his team debut in a friendly against A.C. Milan at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C, scoring one goal in a 2-0 victory. After suffering from injury during the first half of the campaign, he returned and helped lead Barcelona to a second-place league finish. Ronaldinho won his first league title in 2004-05, and was named FIFA World Player of the Year on December 20, 2004. On March 8, 2005, Barcelona were eliminated from the Champions League by Chelsea F.C in the first knockout round, with Ronaldinho scoring both goals in a 4-2 loss.[17] With Ronaldinho's contract expiring in 2008, he was offered an extension until 2014 that would have net him £85 million over nine years,[18] but he turned it down. In September 2005, he signed a two-year extension that contained a minimum-fee release clause that allowed him to leave should a club make an offer to Barcelona of at least £85 million for him.[19] Ronaldinho with Frank Rijkaard at NASA's Johnson Space Center.By the end of the 2004-05 season, Ronaldinho had started to accumulate a host of personal awards. He won the inaugural FIFPro World Player of the Year in September 2005, in addition to being included in the FIFPro World XI. He was named as both the European Footballer of the Year, and became the third-ever Brazilian Ballon d'Or winner. He was again named FIFA World Player of the Year with 956 points, more than triple the amount (306) of runner-up Frank Lampard. On November 19, 2005, Ronaldinho scored twice as Barcelona defeated Real Madrid 3-0 on the road in the first leg of the El Clásico. After he sealed the match with his second goal, he received a standing ovation from the Madrid fans. He was chosen for the UEFA Team of 2005 for the third consecutive year in January 2006. Barcelona eliminated SL Benfica in the '05-06 CL quarterfinals with a 2-0 home victory, with Ronaldinho scoring one of the goals after missing an early penalty kick. After a 1-0 semifinal aggregate win over AC Milan, in which Ronaldinho assisted the series' only goal by Ludovic Giuly, Barcelona progressed to their first-ever CL final, which they won on March 17, 2006 with a 2-1 defeat of Arsenal F.C. despite Ronaldinho being kept in check for the match. Two weeks earlier, Barcelona had clinched their second straight La Liga title with a 1-0 win over Celta Vigo, giving Ronaldinho his first career double. He finished the season with a career-best twenty-six goals in all competitions, and was named the 2005-06 Champions League Player of the Year. Ronaldinho in August 2006.On November 25, 2006, Ronaldinho scored his fiftieth career league goal against Villarreal CF, then later scored a second time with an overhead bicycle kick. He later said to reporters that the latter was a goal he had dreamed of scoring since he was a boy.[20] He scored once and set up two others in Barcelona's 4-0 Club World Cup win over Mexico's Club América on December 14, but Barcelona were defeated 1-0 by Brazilian club Internacional in the final.[21] Ronaldinho was nonetheless the recipient of the Bronze Ball Award for the competition. Maris Verpakovskis (how we made it to the EURO2004) 1. Part Video created by me! Here's a comp featuring Maris goals in the qualification of UEFA EURO 2004. 2. Part to come Club career Maris Verpakovskis started his career in Latvian club FK Liepājas Metalurgs, for which he played from 1995 till 2001 and scored 10 goals in 59 appearances. In 2001 Maris joined another Latvian side, Skonto FC, where he scored 41 goals goals in 77 appearances. This time of period is known for being a peak of Verpakovskis career. His excellent performance has been recognized by many top European clubs, and in late 2003 he signed a contract with Ukrainian top team Dynamo Kyiv. Maris quickly earned his spot in starting 11, scoring 5 goals in 11 appearances. Maris Verpakovskis scored his first Champion League goal against Turkish club Trabzonspor, which helped Dynamo qualify to the next round and later Maris scored a goal against Real Madrid in group stage, helping to earn 2:2 draw in Kyiv. Verpakovskis scored a total of 3 goals in Champion League. After being honored as Dynamo Kyiv's best player of 2004 by team fans, his career slowly started to decline, majorly due to a conflict with Dynamo's coach Yozhef Sabo. In 2007 Verpakovskis made a promising move to Spain, after he has been signed on loan by Getafe CF. However, due to a high competition for a place in starting line up, Maris never got a chance to show his full brilliance and later been loaned by HNK Hajduk Split from Croatia, along with his Dynamo team-mates Florin Cernat and Goran Sablic. Verpakovskis did a good season in Hadjuk, scoring 5 goals in 18 appearances and made some key roles in team's victory. In early 2008 Maris received an injury and haven't been on the field till the loan term with HNK Hajduk Split has been expired. In June 2008 Maris Verpakovskis made a comeback to Dynamo Kyiv. [edit] International career He rose to international prominence as the highest goalscorer for Latvia in their successful Euro 2004 qualification campaign, with 6 goals in 10 matches. He scored once for Latvia in Euro 2004 and nearly scored what would have been the goal of the tournament against Germany, dribbling on a weaving run from the half way line and beating four German players. Verpakovskis is regarded as the most popular Latvian footballer having surpassed Marian Pahars as his country's most recognisable player. He is currently the leading all time top goal scorer for Latvia, with 23 goals.
