Tokio Hotel on Fresh Crops Tokio Hotel was on Fresh Crops. It's on On Demand, if you have Comcast. I'm sorry, the video is a bit blurry, but it has great sound. It might be a little bit loud. I didn't laugh or talk throughout the video either, like most videos, so you can hear what they are saying. I tried my best. Enjoy! ENGLISH SUBTITLES! : Narrator: German rockers Tokio Hotel have plans to take over the globe, bringing with them a stream of chart topping hits from their native country. Watch them as they hit a New York City c.d. signing, greeted by thousands of screaming fans, right now on Fresh Crops. -Somewhere in the crowded field of new music, grows an artist, destined to forever mark the musical landscape, and we're going to pick them. It's the show thats cultivating the next break out artists, this is Fresh Crops.- Bill: We are Tokio Hotel, from Germany. Narrator: Starting a rock band in the small town of Magdeburg, Germany wasn't the most common thing, but for twin brothers, Tom and Bill Kaulitz, it was the only thing to do. Tom: There are not a lot of bands from Germany who have the chance to play in America. Bill: Magdeburg and our village was just terrible. I think, if you are young, it's just boring. I think everyone was watching us in school cuz we went with that clothes to school and yeah, the teacher said "okay, we don't want to teach you." and yeah we had always trouble cuz um yeah it was different but that was what we wanted to do. Narrator: The band, originally called Devilish, was formed in 2001. In 2003, lead singer Bill participated in the German version of Star Search. Although he lost in the quater final, he gained the attention of producer Peter Hoffman. Devilish eventually changed their name to Tokio Hotel and were signed to Sony BMG. Tom: We got the chance to go to the studio near Hamburg and um yeah we did some recordings and a lot of, you know, song writing things and um rehearsals and rehearsals and rehearsals. Georg: I think the whole process took like two years. Tom: Yeah, two years. Narrator: In 2005, Sony terminated their contract with Tokio Hotel. They were quickly picked up by Universal Music Group and in November of that year, released their debut album, Schrei, skyrocketing these German rebels to stardom. Bill: At first we released our record in Germany and after that in Europe and it was so crazy. We played, i think, three European tours and then we get the chance to come to America. Tom: Before we just thought that we never get a record deal or stuff like that. and yeah, after some time, our first single went straight to number one, that's just crazy. Bill: And our completely life changed from one to another day. Narrator: Tokio Hotel quickly became a phenomenom, Schrei went to go off platinum, and with four number one singles and a strong internet fanbase, Tokio Hotel has become the most popular band to come out of Germany in two decades. All of this in the course of two years. But in the midst of their sucess, the band hit a bump. Bill: We played our European tour and I lost my voice. I went to a doctor in Germany and um, it was a cyst on my vocal chords and the doctor said "okay yeah we need to do an surgery." After that i had rehab for three weeks. And now everything is fine again, but it was a really, really hard time. Fans: We want Tokio Hotel! Narrator: Now with newly repaired vocal pipes, Bill Kaulitz and Tokio Hotel were ready to take all their sucess to America, where they were greated with open arms. Bill: We were so nervous and um yeah, I think in January, we were the first time in New York. Tom: yeah, yeah. Bill: and we played two shows and we were so excited because there so many fans, and we never expected that we have fans in America. Tom: We thought we had to sell the tickets on the street and say " yeah hi, we are Tokio Hotel, from Germany, do you want to come to our concert?" but it was like in , i dont know, in one day it was sold out and yeah. Bill: We were so proud of every fan. It was like "wow you're our fan? wow, hi!" Narrator: So the next time you see Tokio Hotel rocking out in your town, remember you saw them first here on Fresh Crops, only on Music Choice. Our movie, "Crazy Crops: An Investigation of GM Crops," was created to introduce the hype, concerns, and facts about genetically modified crops. This short film follows the activities of five students as they search for the 'truth' about genetically modified foods after being frightened by a CNN story on Taco Bell. The film makers check literature, search the internet and interview experts to find the answers they seek. This film was created by students participating in a special McPherson Endowment seminar course at Michigan State University with instructors Drs. Alice Dreger and Doug Luckie. Genetically Modified Crops In this protest, farmers from fifteen states are expected to take part covering Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Orissa, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. Consumers from Delhi are expected to join the farmers in this protest against the Government of India and big agri-business corporations in their undemocratic attempts to thrust down unsafe food down our throats. In India, we are standing on the verge of the first GM food crop, Bt Brinjal, being approved for the second (and probably last) year large scale trials this Kharif 2008. It is at this juncture that this protest, a symbol of the building resistance against GM crops, is being organized. Tags: Genetically Modified Crops |

Goldberg, distinguished professor of molecular, cell and developmental biology at UCLA and a member of the National Academy of Sciences, has won numerous awards for his pioneering research, which employs genetic and molecular approaches to study gene expression during plant development and differentiation. In his dynamic lecture on genes, seeds and crops, "What Are the Genes Required to Make a Seed? Importance for Food, Fuel and Engineering New Crops," he addresses what can be done about the 40,000 people who die each day of hunger. Genetic Engineering in Agriculture During the 20th century, the yield of crop plants has increased dramatically thanks to new technologies and cultivation practices. Genetic engineering- the most powerful of these new technologies- has produced crops that are resistant to insects, viruses, and other pathogens. Within the next decade, scientists will have identified all of the genes necessary program the entire life cycle of crop plants and will understand their functions. We will soon be able to manipulate crops to grow under limiting conditions and to produce an abundance of food to feed an exponentially growing world population. Bolivia sees the benefit of rising food costs - 07 Jul 08 Soaring food prices around the world are putting greater hardship on the world's poor. But head to different parts of the world and you will find places where rising food prices are having a positive effect. In Bolivia for example, the greater profitability of crops like rice and coffee has farmers at last making a switch the international community has long wanted - away from growing coca. Leaders there say the change is causing a revolution in Bolivian agriculture. Tom Ackerman has more. Tags: Al Jazeera aljazeera Bolivia coca rice coffee crops food price rise |
