Animation depicting Fuller's geometric explorations - Whitney Museum Digital animation by Michelle Chang with Helen Han and Temple Simpson. This animation presents the geometry that is the basis of many of Fuller's key ideas and concepts. At the beginning, twelve spheres are packed as closely as possible around a single central sphere. As the spheres shrink and disappear, they generate a polyhedron in which all edges and all radii are of equal length. This shape is what Fuller called a vector equilibrium. One of the characteristics of a vector equilibrium is its ability to contract by folding in on itself. The animation demonstrates how this simple geometric shape can be transformed to create several complex polyhedra. Next, it produces a different version of a vector equilibrium that Fuller called tensegrity—short for a stable structure of tensional integrity. In the last part of the animation, a map of the entire globe is transferred onto the vector equilibrium, which unfolds to produce a flat map of the earth made from six squares and eight triangles. Unlike conventional world maps, Fuller's vector equilibrium map represents the world with minimal distortions to the relative size of the continents. Rachel Maddow comments on New Yorker cover cartoon depicting Obama as a terrorist Rachel Maddow, guest host on countdown with Keith olbermann, discusses the New Yorker cover cartoon with Jonathan Alter of Newsweek ----------------------- I've watched just about every televised speech Senator Obama has delivered during the primary and campaign. I watched every debate. I've loved his wry sense of humor, indefatigable wit and charm. I'm a former Republican that Obama won over BECAUSE of his charm, and of course because of his ideas and character too. As readers of my last Huffington Post blog know, I didn't think the New Yorker cover was a joke. I thought it was disgusting. But that's not my point here. My point is that this presidential race isn't about humor. It's about restoring America. Here's a thought for Maureen Dowd and Jon Stewart: some things are serious. Here are a few examples: The first black person successfully running for the presidency in our racist country, The first chance that America has had in 8 years to get beyond government by fear and exchange it for leadership through hope, The first opportunity our country has had to end a disastrous, unjust, stupid and unnecessary war (something I feel personally rather deeply about since my Marine son fought in that war), The first opportunity we've had in 8 years to redeem America's good name around the world and therefore diminish the chances of our country being attacked, our soldiers killed and our lives being put at risk, Our best chance to win the real war against our actual enemies who are hiding in Afghanistan and Pakistan, rather than continuing to be distracted by a phony war in Iraq against people who never did us harm, The first chance we have had to address our huge and potentially terminal environmental problems through a president--and Democratic majority--that will actually do something to save our earth's ability to sustain life The first opportunity that our country has had in our lifetimes to elect a president whose background will help us heal the racial, cultural and economic divide that has haunted us since the days of slavery, Jim Crow, lynching and legalized discrimination, The best chance we've had to reform health care, A chance to elect a brilliant and charismatic leader the likes of which has not been seen since FDR, who has inspired a whole new generation to step forward and is challenging them to serve our country, just as we were about to give up on altruism. Barack and Michelle Obama are the most charmingly self-deprecating political figures I've seen in my lifetime. There is a human and down-to-earth quality to them. So the media line on their "humorlessness" is pure BS. But even if it were not BS, Obama is not running to provide Jon Stewart, Maureen Dowd and late night comedy writers with material. He is running to save this country. There are worse things than being serious. Being robbed of a country that that we can be proud of is one of those things. Being robbed of our future is another. We are voting for Obama to restore hope, decency and national pride, without which laughter makes no sense. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/frank-schaeffer/maureen-dowd-and-jon-stew_b_113390.html Tags: Rachel Maddow New yorker cover cartoon Barack Hussein Obama Michelle Osama bin Laden flag pin patriotism john Mccain terrorism e-mail rumors countdown Keith olbermann |

MSM, Obama respond to New Yorker cover cartoon depicting Barack and Michelle as terrorists The mainstream media and Barack Obama campaign respond to The New Yorker cover cartoon depicting himself and Michelle Obama as terrorists. ------------------------- What explanation -- other than everyone at the New Yorker being turned into a Pat Buchanan clone -- can one find for the fact that the best magazine in America has produced the FOX News/Karl Rove poster of the Obama family? If this cover works as "satire" then so did the Protocols of the Elders of Zion. Call vicious caricature by it's name. If this was well intended then more fool the editor. As a former lifelong Republican, as an activist key in the formation of the Religious Right, as a white middle-aged middle-class man who is an avid supporter of Senator Obama, let me explain what went wrong: the editor only knows people like himself. The editor of the magazine should have learned from one of the most famous New Yorker covers of all time: the one that mocked NYC provincialism and portrayed the rest of the country as a footnote to Manhattan. I happen to have come from a background that was very different from your average New Yorker reader. My parents were fundamentalist missionaries. I know how the "other side" thinks. I WAS the other side (as I explain in my book CRAZY FOR GOD-How I Grew Up As One Of The Elect, Helped Found The Religious Right, And Lived To Take All--Or Almost All--Of It Back). Editors who live in hermetically sealed rareified echo chambers seem to think that everyone thinks as they do. They don't. The editors of the New Yorker should really get to know the "other" a bit better and hang out less with people like themselves and more with the sorts of unwashed mob they scorn. But even so that might not have helped stop this cover. More than provincialism was at work here. This cover was a blackface-style racial insult. It is either the work of well intended fools or racists. Note: being cool, educated, ironic, smart, self-aware, progressive and powerful is no excuse and doesn't give anyone a pass. As a white man cognizant of my country's racial sins, I say that this cover crossed the line. Race is no joke. The cover was a racist slur. LOOK AT IT! Look at the racially exaggerated features. We've had enough parody of black men and women in America to last us about another 1000 years before we need more crap like this. And even if this was intended as satire, the editor should have read the latest brain science and psychology on how repetition of lies stick, even when the lies are being denied (or satirized). Progressives, Democrats and all those independent voters like me who long to turn the page on the Bush catastrophe -- get a grip! What is a joke to some of you is face value serious to Obama's legion of goofy, misguided and frankly stupid (and sometimes deeply racist) enemies. If Obama loses this election thank the liberals, progressives and Democrats carping about Obama's "mistakes." And thank the smart ass provincial little editors at the New Yorker who squandered a historic opportunity for the sake of a few extra copies sold at the news stand. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/frank-schaeffer/provincial-progressives-t_b_112971.html MATTHEWS: You know, the trouble is, to many people, it reminds of a Thomas Nast cartoon of the 19th century, where they showed Irish immigrants as monkeys. You know, you can say on a sophisticated level that everybody gets the joke, but people who see that picture of him in a turban and his wife carrying an AK-47, and a big picture, a loving picture of Osama bin Laden, an American flag burning in the fireplace—I'll bet you any money that the right will be using that as T-shirt material within the next couple weeks...there are a lot of people out there who want to believe he's a Muslim, who want to believe that he's too exotic to vote for, for a lot of ethnic reasons. They prefer to think of guy named Osama bin Laden—not Osama...Barack Obama, with the middle name Hussein, as a Muslim, as someone exotic and un-American. It's useful to them to have this kind of art. Islamic depictions of Muhammad Medieval Muslim artists often created paintings and illuminated manuscripts depicting Muhammed in full. Several examples are presented here. Other artists of the era drew Muhammed, but left his face blank so as to technically comply with a sporadically enforced Islamic ban on depicting the Prophet. In 1999, Islamic art expert Wijdan Ali wrote a scholarly overview of the Muslim tradition of depicting Mohammed, which can be read here in PDF format. http://www2.let.uu.nl/Solis/anpt/ejos/pdf4/07Ali.pdf In that essay, Ali demonstrates that the prohibition against depicting Muhammed did not arise until as late as the 16th or 17th century, despite the media's recent false claims that it has always been forbidden for Muslims to draw Muhammed. Until comparatively recently in Islamic history, it was perfectly common to show Muhammed, either in full, or with his face hidden. Even after the 17th century, up to modern times, Islamic depictions of Muhammed (especially in Shi'ite areas) continued to be produced. I like that one, dear Lily ... : ) So, enjoy watching the photographs taken by Bojan Milovic Mind not to miss the reflection image of the two lovers in the bubble at 3.23 : ) This time I have chosen music played by my favourite band - the magnificent Apocalyptica It is an instrumental remake of Metallica's Nothing Else Matters: So close no matter how far Couldnt be much more from the heart Forever trusting who we are And nothing else matters Never opened myself this way Life is ours, we live it our way All these words I dont just say And nothing else matters Trust I seek and I find in you Every day for us something new Open mind for a different view And nothing else matters Never cared for what they do Never cared for what they know But I know So close no matter how far Couldnt be much more from the heart Forever trusting who we are And nothing else matters Never cared for what they do Never cared for what they know But I know Never opened myself this way Life is ours, we live it our way All these words I dont just say And nothing else matters Trust I seek and I find in you Every day for us something new Open mind for a different view And nothing else matters Never cared for what they say Never cared for games they play Never cared for what they do Never cared for what they know And I know So close no matter how far Couldnt be much more from the heart Forever trusting who we are No nothing else matters *** "Nothing Else Matters" is a song by heavy metal band Metallica. It was first released in 1991 on the self-titled Black Album. Many long-standing Metallica fans, who were used to the harsh lyrical nature of the first three Metallica ballads, did not appreciate the inclusion of a love song. It was one of the principal songs fans pointed to when accusing the band of "selling out." Regardless, the song is now very popular among Metallica fans. Singer and rhythm guitarist James Hetfield initially wrote it to a former girlfriend, but now he cannot remember why;[citation needed] some say it meant that "no matter how far" he was (since Metallica spent most of their time on tours), he was still "so close" with the heart. He considered it a very personal song and was not going to publish it, but once drummer Lars Ulrich heard it he wanted it on Metallica. Now Metallica consider it a song dedicated to all their fans. It has become a staple of their live performances. Tags: world music Nothing Else Matters Metallica Apocalyptica Art Photography www.milovic.net |

McCain is Continuation of Bush Policies Sen. John McCain's ad depicting Sen. Barack Obama as a paparrazzi-worthy celeb in the same class as Britney Spears and Paris Hilton may be the oddest attack ad in recent campaigns, but it's not clear whom it hurts more -- Obama or McCain. The clear message in the Republican's ad is that the candidacy of Obama, who draws tens of thousands of admirers for his speeches, has been buoyed by his celebrity rather than grounded in the presidential school of hard knocks. "Like most worldwide celebrities," reads a McCain campaign memo about the ad, "this status has fueled a certain arrogance." The Republican Party's new Web site, Audacity Watch -- a not-so-sly reference to Obama's book "The Audacity of Hope" -- cites Obama's use of a faux presidential seal on his podium as an example of his arrogance. And the GOP could only stew during Obama's world tour last week, when he was treated like a world leader in the Mideast and greeted by more than 200,000 fans for a speech in Berlin. California I built this collage depicting the Governator blowing away cops (from the Terminator) around a song I made from Joni Mitchell's "California" and L.L. Cool J's "Goin' Back to Cali," which begins with an excerpt from NWA's anti-LAPD diatribe "Fuck tha Police." While Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, and the other guys in NWA got a letter from the FBI for fictionally depicting cop killing in song, Arnold was elected the governor of the state of California. I guess it helps to be white. Tags: California Governator |

Demon festival in Indonesia Colourful effigies, depicting the evil spirits, were paraded through Bali's main crossroad crowded by thousands of curious onlookers. Each effigy, known as ogoh-ogoh, is traditionally paraded on the eve of Balinese New Year by every village across the predominantly Hindu island. The bigger, more dramatic, and scarier an ogoh-ogoh is, the more it will be admired. Even though most of the ogoh-ogoh typically depict images from classical Balinese folklore, some have more modern characters than the traditional demons with bulging eyes, fangs and scary hair-do. www.itnsource.com Reuters 2570/05 Tags: itnsource seasonal parade festival Halloween celebration |
