Developing Time Travel Part 1 Coast To Coast AM Wednesday August 8th, 2007 Developing Time Travel Professor of Physics at the Univ. of Conn., Dr. Ron Mallett shared his research into time travel. His interest in developing a time machine was brought about by the early death of his father and his desire to go back into the past and see him. Mallett's concept for a time machine (see graphic below) centers around the idea that a circulating beam of light can cause a twisting of space and time, looping the past and future together. Travel into the past could only occur during the time frame that the machine had been turned on, as those are the moments that are "preserved," he explained. For instance, if the machine was created in January 2008 and left on for a year, any month in 2008 could be visited in 2009. However, to go back further into time, he suggested that humans might eventually have access to ET's time machines which may have existed for thousands of years. Time machines could have practical uses as early warning devices, giving notice about catastrophes. While the cost to create one could run into the billions of dollars, Mallett said his first stage of experimentation would run about $250,000. Once the basic principles can be established, it will take about five years to demonstrate the twisting of light with subatomic particles, and another five years for the twisting of space. He predicted that we could have human time travel by the end of this century. GAMEFACE : Developing Typefaces for the Xbox 360 and Other Devices Google Tech Talks July, 15 2008 ABSTRACT The Xbox 360 game platform was released with a great deal of fanfare surrounding its new product design and user interface. The developers saw the need for a tight brand consistency with print, packaging, and product interface, and chose to commission a new typeface family for use throughout the brand. Steve presents the path to the Xbox 360's new look from the type designer's perspective: the evolution of the product, the design brief, the creative process, and the unique challenges of developing a font for less than optimal screen displays. Steve also discusses the business and technology of fonts, the work for the Android platform and, most importantly, why type matters in an age of multimedia and text messaging. Speaker: STEVE MATTESON STEVE MATTESON is the Director of Type Design for Ascender Corporation and has created fonts for use in various screen display environments and print publishing since 1987. A graduate of Rochester Institute of Technology, Steve has an extensive background in typography, design and printing which he has applied to his development of high quality typefaces. His work can be found in user interface designs (such as Windows Vista, Xbox 360 and Google's Android Platform); in publishing (such as Pescadero Pro, Andy and Endurance Pro); and for corporate branding (such as Symantec, Microsoft and Alcon Labs). He resides in Louisville, CO with his wife, 2 kids and 2 Labrador Retrievers. Satellite based Internet for the developing world Google Tech Talks April, 22 2008 ABSTRACT History has shown that access to the internet advances many facets of life including education, economic growth, and health care. Currently, only approximately 20 percent of the world population has access to the internet, which is mainly focused in North America, Australia, and Europe. More specifically, Africa being the most unconnected continent in the world has only 5 percent of its population utilizing the internet, whereas 70 percent of the population uses the internet in North America. It is predicted that these unconnected areas of the world will soon be serviced via land lines in the coming decades. However, no short term solution to this problem currently exists. The students from the Space Systems Engineering program at the University of Michigan have worked on designing a low-cost system that fulfills this "gap" in internet connectivity. This presentation will focus on their proposed solution to delivering such capabilities to the rural populations of Africa. In addition, upcoming technologies will be discussed that will impact similar missions in the future. A Formal Approach for Developing Reliable Service-based Systems Google Tech Talks November, 29 2007 ABSTRACT Service-based systems are increasingly being used for deploying large-scale applications in mission-critical environments. In such a system, applications are built by combining services, which are platform independent components running on different hosts of a wireless network. Prime concerns in such systems include, among others, adaptability to unforeseen situations (e.g., behaviors of services can be modified due to unforeseen events such as node failures or distributed denial of service attacks), situation-awareness (in order to detect changes in the environment and adapt accordingly) and security. In this talk, we present a formal approach to developing adaptable, situation-aware, secure service-based distributed systems. To this end, we first present a process calculus-based programming model for such systems. The operational semantics of the model combines external behaviors with internal computation for accessing current situation and dynamically adapting and reacting to it. Continuation passing is used for handling asynchronous service invocations. In order to declaratively specify properties of such systems, we introduce an intuitionistic hybrid modal logic. The logic not only has modalities for expressing both temporal and spatial behavior but also constructs for describing communication and knowledge and atomic formulas for describing relations between variables. We show how intelligent agents can be automatically synthesized from declarative specifications in the logic and deployed wirelessly. In order to deploy the synthesized agents, we have developed, jointly with the Naval Research Laboratory, the Secure Infrastructure for Networked Systems (SINS), a middleware platform built on the top of JHU's Spread group communication toolkit. In the last part of the talk, we provide a demo of a mission-critical application for intelligent management of a power system developed using the approach mentioned above and deployed on the SINS platform. Speaker: Dr. Supratik Mukhopadhyay Dr. Supratik Mukhopadhyay is an Assistant Professor at the Utah State University where he heads the Distributed Software Laboratory. His research interests lie in the areas of distributed systems, software engineering, programming languages, and sensor networks. Developing F-22 "Raptor" The F-22 Raptor is a fifth generation stealth fighter aircraft. It was originally envisioned as an air superiority fighter for use against the Soviet Air Force, but is equipped for ground attack, electronic warfare and signals intelligence roles as well. Faced with a protracted development period, the prototype aircraft was designated YF-22 and, as F/A-22 during the three years before formally entering United States Air Force service in December 2005 as the F-22A. Lockheed Martin Aeronautics is the prime contractor and is responsible for the majority of the airframe, weapon systems and final assembly of the F-22. Along with Lockheed Martin, partner Boeing Integrated Defense Systems provides the wings, aft fuselage, avionics integration, and all of the pilot and maintenance training systems.he Advanced Tactical Fighter (ATF) contract was a demonstration and validation program undertaken by the United States Air Force to develop a next-generation air superiority fighter to counter emerging worldwide threats, including development and proliferation of Soviet-era Su-27 'Flanker'-class fighter aircraft. In 1981, USAF developed a requirement for a new air superiority fighter intended to replace the capability of the F-15 Eagle. It was envisaged that the ATF would incorporate emerging technologies including advanced alloys and composite material, advanced fly-by-wire flight control systems, higher power propulsion systems, and low-observable/stealth technology.A request for proposal (RFP) was issued in July 1986, and two contractor teams, Lockheed/Boeing/General Dynamics and Northrop/McDonnell Douglas were selected in October 1986 to undertake a 50 month demonstration/validation phase, culminating in the flight test of two prototypes, the YF-22 and the YF-23.The original Boeing Advanced Tactical Fighter concept, 1986.The original Boeing Advanced Tactical Fighter concept, 1986.Following a hard-fought fly-off competition, in August 1991 the YF-22 was declared the winner and Lockheed was awarded the contract to develop and build the Advanced Tactical Fighter.Intended to be the leading American advanced tactical fighter in the early part of the 21st century, the Raptor is the world's most expensive fighter to date with a cost of about US$120 million per unit, or US$361 million per unit when development costs are added. As of April 2005 the total development and production cost of the program is at least US$70 billion, and the number of planes to be built has dropped to 438, then 381, and now to 180, down from the initial requirement of 750.Part of the reason for the decrease in the requirement is that the F-35 Lightning II uses much of the technology used on the F-22, but at a much more affordable price. To a large extent the cost of these technologies is only lower for the F-35 because they have already been developed for the F-22.The production model was formally named F-22 "Raptor" when the first production-representative plane was unveiled on 9 April 1997 at Lockheed-Georgia Co., Marietta, Georgia. First flight occurred on 7 September 1997. The dual afterburning Pratt & Whitney F119-PW-100 turbofans incorporate thrust vectoring. Thrust vectoring is in the pitch axis only, with a range of ±20 degrees. The maximum thrust is classified, though most sources place it at about 35,000 lbf (156 kN) per engine. Maximum speed is estimated to be Mach 1.72 in supercruise mode and without external weapons; with afterburners, it is "greater than Mach 2.0" (2,120 km/h), according to Lockheed Martin. The Raptor can easily exceed its design speed limits, particularly at low altitudes; max-speed alerts help prevent the pilot from exceeding the limits. General John P. Jumper, former U.S. Air Force Chief of Staff, flew the Raptor faster than Mach 1.7 without afterburners on January 13, 2005. The absence of variable intake ramps may make speeds greater than Mach 2.0 unreachable, but there is no evidence to prove this. Such ramps would be used to prevent engine surge, but the intake itself may be designed to prevent this. Former Lockheed Raptor chief test pilot Paul Metz stated that the Raptor has a fixed inlet. Metz has also stated that the F-22 has a top speed greater than 1600 mph (Mach 2.42) and its climb rate is faster than the F-15 Eagle due to advances in engine technology, despite the F-15's thrust-to-weight ratio of about 1.2:1, with the F-22 having a ratio closer to 1:1.The F-22 is highly maneuverable, at both supersonic and subsonic speeds. The usage of the F-22's thrust vectoring nozzles allows the aircraft to turn tightly, and perform extremely high alpha (angle of attack) maneuvers such as the J-Turn (or Herbst maneuver), Pugachev's Cobra and the Kulbit, though the J-Turn is more useful in combat. The F-22 is also capable of maintaining a constant angle of attack of over 60°, yet still having some control of roll.Cruise altitude is a huge factor in performance. The Importance of Developing Good Habits In Our Daily Lives From the public domain film, "Habit Patterns" (1954). The word virtue comes from Latin. It denotes "strength of character leading to courageous deeds". St. Augustine says that "virtue is a good habit consonant with our nature". The virtues are dispositions or habits of character that lead us to do good. Virtues are good character traits or habits of the heart. Augustine further defined virtue as "a good quality of the mind by which we live righteously, of which no one can make bad use." The virtues dispose us to an orientation of life opposite that of the vices. Prayer is also essential in developing good habits.
