Diamagnetic Levitation Organisms levitate in a 32mm vertical bore of a Bitter solenoid in a magnetic field of about 16 Tesla at the Nijmegen High Field Magnet Laboratory. BASICALLY: Dutch Scientists learned to levitate living objects by increasing the amount of magnetic force. Diamagnetic levitation A neodynium iron boron magnet is levitated between two pyrolytic graphite plates. The levitation is stable and requires no active servo or external energy. The stack of larger neodynium iron boron magnet provides the main lifting force and the pyrolytic graphite plates create a region of stability. This secret is the fact that the pyrolytic graphite is strongly diamagnetic. Bismuth (also diamagnetic) will also work in place of the pyrolitic graphite. I have left this levitator alone an it will maintain the levitation for weeks on end. If you like levitation, look also at the Levitron. The levitron is also interesting but will not levitate forever like this device will. I also like meisner effects and have a sumarium cobalt magnet that will levitate above a yttrium barium copper oxide (YBCO) superconductor. I hope you enjoy this video. Bismuth Diamagnetic Properties Bismuth (element no. 83) is one of the weirdest elements. Though encircle in the periodic table by other heavy elements with infamous toxicological history, Bismuth is considered the least toxic of these metals. Bismuth is known for many strange properties - this video demonstrates its massive diamagnetic behavior: Bismuth is repelled by magnets but for demonstration it is recommended to use rare-earth magnets, as kitchen-magnets are all too week. Bismuth is rather expensive but for educational purposes it is worth consideration. For electromagnetic, physical, chemical and artistic purposes it is eminent. For artwork and metal casting it is a wonderful replacement for the toxic Lead (Pb). Furthermore Bismuth forms low melting alloys with many other metals. In its pure form it is very brittle, with a reddish luster. Cooled slowly it forms large, beautiful crystals, covered with oxide layers in the colors of the rainbow. Etching the surface to see the crystals can be done in a dilute solution of hydrochloride to which is added a small amount of hydrogen peroxide (1 part of HCL poured slowly in 3-5 parts of water. Then you add 1 part of 35-40% H2O2). Dipping a piece of slowly cooled Bismuth in this solution will remove the oxide and reveal the beautiful crystals. The slower the cooling process is, the larger the crystal will be. Enjoy the fun! Magnetic Levitation Train Explanation: this is a museum model to demo how a magnetic levitation train works. It takes advantage of four design elements: (1) an inhomogeneous magnetic field that repels a diamagnetic plate so that it floats about 1 mm above the track, (2) the shape and size of the diamagnetic plate is optimized in a way so that, with the specific permanent magnet in use, the train is guided even at bends along the track without touching the surface, (3) a linear motor using a sensor coil and two drive coils to move the train model forward, (4) solar panels which convert solar energy into electrical energy. The track consists of three rows of neodymium platelets which are aligned in a way so that the two outer rows are inversely polarized to the middle row on which the train model moves. As a diamagnetic material a thin layer of pyrolytic graphite is used. Pyrolytic graphite is a material which is neither ferromagnetic nor paramagnetic so that the repulsive properties of diamagnetism become effective. The linear motor senses the slight disturbances in the magnetic field between the neodymium platelets of the track thanks to the sensor coil. It switches between the two drive coils to that the model train can move along. The little electricity which is needed for the linear motor to operate comes from the solar panels on top of the model train.
