Michael Shanks & Lexa Doig educate Chris Judge about Furries Video taken at Dragon*Con 2007 on the last day (Mega Panel 3), Monday, Sept. 3rd. You'll have to forgive the shaking, but I was laughing so hard during this, and I wasn't using a tripod. Alexis Cruz had just given a beautiful answer to why the Stargate crew goes to fan run cons like Dragon*Con, and he ended it with a comment about how it's all about self-expression. Here's the video of Michael's interjection about Furries and Chris and Lexa's antics that stemmed there from. Transcription of video: Michael Shanks: Although we can stop expressing ourselves at the Furries, I think(a comment drowned out by laughing - sorry!). We can limit the expression right before then. Lexa Doig: Michael just learned about them last night. Christopher Judge: What are furries? Michael Shanks: I'll tell ya later. Christopher Judge: Makes mention of something like "is it like gay porn or something". Michael Shanks: Beep (I think he was trying to censore Chris at this point) Audience Member 1: That's called slash. Christopher Judge: What is it? What is it? (He wants to know about Furries still, but the audience member - I think - was confused and thought he was asking about the definition of slash). Audience Member 1: Slash is gay fanfiction. Chris says something that's drowned out by many people talking, and Lexa (I think it was her, anyway) chimes in with the comment that Furries are anthropomorphics. Alexis Cruz: Do we have a Furry rep here? Me: Don't look at the girl in the ears. I just like the ears. Christopher Judge: What is that? Michael Shanks: Just...just...shhhhh. Audience members are trying to be helpful and yelling things, but it's hard to understand them. Michael Shanks: I'll tell ya later. Audience Member 2: Someone tell him. I want to see his expression, please? (meaning Chris'...boy did she get her wish!) Michael Shanks: Damn, man. Audience Member 4: You started it (meaning Michael was the one who brought up Furries). Audience Member 3: You can whisper in his ear. Michael Shanks: I started it, but he doesn't have to finish it! Michael says something that got lost in the general noise, then says "Children" which makes Chris wonder what that has to do with what Lexa just told him. Christopher Judge: What's wrong...why can't a kid hear about people wearing animal suits? Christopher Judge: What?!?!?!? Lexa Doig: Haven't you seen the episode of CSI? Christopher Judge: What?!?!?!? Christopher Judge: What?!?!?!? (yes, he's said it yet a third time) Michael Shanks: That's right, ladies and gentlemen, you've offended Christopher Judge. Christopher Judge: (incredulous) And I've never done it? (kind of garbled, but I think he then says) Where do you get a suit?! Christopher Judge: Are you serious? (pause) What?!?!? Lexa Doig: Have you seen CSI? (then asking the crowd) Did you see the show devoted to it? I don't know what season it is, but you can get it on DVD, it'll explain everything. (For those of you unfamiliar with it, it's called "Fur and Loathing" in season 4) Michael Shanks: I am so sorry for starting this. Lexa Doig, Michael Shanks, Claudia Black on Childhood Video taken at Dragon*Con 2007 on the third day (Mega Panel 2), Sunday, Sept. 2nd. Usual apologies...shaky camera, no tripod, laughing my butt off...but you get the gist of it anyway. Again, the question was much earlier in the video, and was, "What were you like when you were a child? Around age 9/10." Lexa Doig said a few things that no one could hear, because she wasn't near the mic. This is from when she could actually be heard, Michael Shanks' answer, and Claudia Black's. Lexa Doig: I was a...I was a brat when I was ten. And, uh, that's about it. (I can't remember/hear exactly what she said then, but it starts with "I liked to..." run around, maybe?) (To Michael) Don't bother me, man. You had a mullet. I've seen it. Michael Shanks: Uh....I was a redneck. Claudia Black: "Was?" Michael Shanks: Yeah, I know, was. I'm still wearing the same clothes. Um, yeah, all I know is that the yearbook pictures of the...my parents' pictures of the 70s fashions are not particularly appealing. I looked like James at Fourteen in those days. Remember that show? (I have no clue what he's talking about...anyone??? Though I did find a tv show from 1977 called "James at 15"?) Um...ehhh, god, I'm that old, huh? Um... Claudia Black: There was one person in the audience who knew that. Michael Shanks: I know. Um...But I was passionately in love with two things-- Ice Hockey and Battlestar Galactica. General screaming from the crowd at that (well, duh!), and someone screams "Go Hockey!" or maybe "No Hockey". I can't tell. Claudia Black: I can't remember 8 and 10 specifically...8 or 10 specifically...but a little bit later, when 21 Jump Street started, I wanted to be Richard Greico. Very normal, very normal. So I dressed like him, and I had this hair product called "Stiff Stuff" which sort of took my...my fringe up to about here (holds her hands above her head). How Lexa Doig Keeps Michael Shanks in Line at Home Video taken at Dragon*Con 2007 on the second day (Mega Panel 1), Saturday, Sept. 1st. Marcia, the panel moderator, has asked Lexa Doig how she keeps Michael Shanks, her husband, from getting an ego, but the way she phrased it made for an interesting response. :) And of course, at the end, trust Christopher Judge to lower the conversation yet another gutter level. Transcription below, as requested: Marcia: (speaking to Lexa about Michael) And how do you keep his feet on the ground? How do you keep him from getting "the big head". Michael stands up, motioning at the crowd as if to wave goodbye and says something like: "Thank you for coming." Lexa: I try *not* to keep him from getting the big head. (Transcriptionist's editorial comment...Lexa is a smart woman.) Michael: (to Lexa) I'm not sure I know what that means. Lexa: I'll tell you later (said in a very cute ghetto type voice). Um...all it takes, actually, is two or three poopy diapers and, uh, "Honey, can you go to the store? I forgot the milk. And it kind of takes care of itself. He's a good guy. Mostly. (I think that's what she says at the end, anyway.) Michael: When she's standing there when you have your son, and he has his first....You know I have two daughters, who are older, but my son, you know, I had no experience with that "unit" from this perspective. It usually goes down. When I was changing the diaper, and he's fountaining, on my shoulder and all the way down, and she's the first one who saw it and just started laughing, as opposed to saying, "Honey, look out!"----I knew I'd hit bottom. Lexa: It was cute. The fountain, and he's getting soaked...(she continues on in this vein, though I can't understand, because of the laughter, which is in direct response to Michael pantomiming beside her.) Christopher: You know, I read some fanfiction (the rest of the comment is drowned out by screaming fans, but Lexa kindly repeats the gist of it...) Lexa: Wait a mnute, you've read fanfiction that includes urine? Dude. Christopher: Oh...oh yeah. Michael: And a glass coffee table apparently. Marcia: I think it's time for another question. Paintings by Peter Doig set to music by Alex Wilson These paintings have lovely, evocative washes of colour, which inspired me to compose in a flowing piano style. I get a feeling of calm when watching this sequence - I hope you do too. This is the type of unusual and exciting project that stimulates me as a musician. I was given the DVD with no sound beforehand and asked to prepare piano pieces for each artist. On the day of the recording, I was in the studio Steinway in front of me and TV monitor screen to my right and the record button pressed ! Here you can experience the results.
