Various factors can cause bronchitis and asthma -- viral infections, allergic reactions, etc. Massage therapy and bronchial drainage can play an important role in treatment and management of the aforementioned disorders. We can assume that in cases of bronchitis & bronchial asthma the activities of the sympathetic nervous system are diminished. Massage therapy has the capability to depress or stimulate the divisions of the autonomic nervous system and can be an invaluable tool in depressing the parasympathetic activities, thereby balancing the activities of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system. All of the body's proprioreceptors have various levels of adaptation (their capability to produce action potentials). By deforming these receptors; touch receptors, pressure receptors, etc; we stimulate the creation of electric impulses. Massive stimulation of receptors allows us to affect the activities of different subdivisions of autonomic nervous system according to our needs. Before treatment it is very important to perform the dermographism test to determine an imbalance between the activities of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. This test is performed in a few strokes with a semi-sharp object (corners of the fingernails will do) on the paravertebral zones from approx L/S to the neck. The initial white dermographism changes to red dermographism which disappears in a short amount of time. The white dermographism should change to red within 30 seconds. When red dermographism stays for a prolonged time, sometimes even becoming raised lines with a kind of edema, this is evidence that the parasympathetic nervous system is in much more active tone. If it changes very quickly from red back to white, or stays white, it is a sign that the sympathetic nervous system is much more active. In cases of bronchial asthma and bronchitis we automatically assume that the parasympathetic activities are in domination. In other cases we work in the inhibitory regime as an attempt to depress activities of the sympathetic nervous system. In the case of asthma, it should be opposite -- the massage must be intensive, with the techniques mobile, not staying in one place like the inhibitory regime. The catheter is retained in the bladder by an inflated balloon. The drainage of urine is totally dependent on gravity. Therefore, tubing and the drainage bag, to collect urine, must always be below the level of the bladde. As a caregiver, your responsibilities to a patient with a closed urinary drainage system, are for patient education. * to ensure that the patient drinks at least 8 glasses of water daily, unless on fluid restriction; * to ensure that the catheter and tubes are in a good position and open to allow urine to flow freely into the drainage bag ... * and to keep the body opening where the catheter enters the patient clean and free from secretions. * For an adult, a minimum of 8 glasses of clear water daily is essential. Ensure that the catheter and drainage tube are connected and that there is sufficient slack in the tube, between the body and thigh, to allow the patient to move the thigh without pulling on the catheter. The drainage tube should be attached to the bottom bed sheet by a fabric tie around the tubes and a safety pin, or by a clip if one is provided. The drainage bag can be attached to the bed frame, should never touch the floor, and should always be kept below the level of the patient's bladder for patient education. The drainage bag should be emptied at least daily, more often if it fills, in order to for patient education. * prevent infection in the system, * reduce odors and * keep the system open and flowing. To empty the drainage bag, the following steps should always be followed: Carefully wash and then dry your hands, with a paper towel. Discard the towel into a plastic lined waste basket. On a tray covered with clean paper towels, assemble the following equipment for patient education * A large plastic or glass container * A large plastic sealable storage bag * Disposable gloves * Achohol wipes * Paper towels and place the tray on a stable surface adjacent to the bed for patient education. Carefully wash your hands. Dry them with a paper towel. Discard the paper towel into a wastebasket. Put on your disposable gloves, before patient education Place the container under the drainage bag. Remove the drain from its holder, point it into the container and release the clamp on the drain to allow the urine to flow into the container. Do not allow the drain to touch the container or anything else. When the drainage bag is empty, close the drain, wipe the end of the drain with an achohol wipe and replace the drain in its holder at the base of the drainage bag. Discard the achohol wipe into the plastic storage bag. Check that the catheter and tubes are in place. Take the equipment tray and the container of urine into the bathroom. If your doctor or nurse has asked you to record the amount of urine, measure and make a note of it now. Discard the urine down the toilet ... ...and clean the container with liquid soap and water. Remove the gloves and discard them into the plastic storage bag. Seal the bag and put it into the trash. that's patient education Wash and dry your hands. Discard the paper towel into the trash. Once each day, or according to your doctor's instructions, you will need to clean the urethral meatus - the opening where the catheter enters the body.
