Ford Changes Focus on Bad Earnings BusinessFord Changes Focus on Bad EarningsFord Changes Focus on Bad EarningsThe Associated PressWith Ford posting the worst quarterly performance in its history, the company has outlined steps to deal with a market shift from trucks to cars brought on by high gasoline prices. (July 24)With Ford posting the worst quarterly performance in its history, the company has outlined steps to deal with a market shift from trucks to cars brought on by high gasoline prices. And the solution - at least for now - comes from Europe. Ford will bring six European small car models to North America by the end of 2012.The longer term plan involves shifting production at US plants to add flexibility in response to changes in market demands. The Louisville, Kentucky operations - currently centered on the Ford Explorer - will be outfitted over the next three years to build vehicles based on the European Focus frame. The Michigan Truck plant in suburban Detroit will also shift to the Focus platform by 2010.With much of Ford's income hauled in by large pickups and SUVs, the company faces a bumpy road as it struggles to return to profitability. [Notes:SOT :Efriam Levy, Standard&Poor's Equity Analyst]THEIR VEHICLE MIX IS HURTING THEM NOW. THEY CANT MOVE THE PICKUPS AND SUVS AS FAST AS THEY LIKE AND THEY HAVE TO DISCOUNT THEM. ITS ALSO HURTING THEM ON THE BACK END THAT PEOPLE CANT TRADE IN THESE VEHICLES FOR AS MUCH AS THEY THOUGHT THEY WOULD BE WORTH WHICH HURTS SALES OF THE SMALLER VEHICLES.Ford identified only three of the European small vehicles it will bring to North America: the Transit Connect small van, the European Focus and the subcompact Fiesta. Ford said the other three vehicles would be identified later, including one that is unique within its segment. ___ ___, The Associated Press.(****END****) Tags: earns ford changes focus on bad earnings |

Corporate Advisory Insight: Tech Earnings Recap Phil Abram from Thomson Reuters' Corporate Advisory Services group gives a Tech Earnings recap. Transcript: During of a season of quarterly earnings forecast to be plagued by budget contraction, consumer weakness, and overall credit concerns, the technology sector has surprisingly shown signs of strength from some of its biggest bellweathers. I'm Phil Abram, bringing you Thomson Reuters' Tech earnings recap. The economic slowdown has had its victims within the sector, particularly those with higher exposure to the consumer. For example, the semiconductor space has been hurt by slowing sales in some of its products' end markets. Weaker than expected demand in PCs and wireless handsets in particular, cut into revenues or pushed inventory levels higher over the quarter for several companies in the space. Proving itself to be more resilient however, Intel delivered a strong quarter, reporting in-line EPS and revenue thanks in part to its diverse product array and high product quality which in addition to carrying the company through the harsh environment, also helped it gain market share. Product diversification was also a key theme for Apple and Microsoft. Microsoft reported weak revenue for the quarter, blaming soft PC demand for disappointing sales of its Windows operating system, but that weakness was mitigated by the company's gaming division on strong Xbox sales. Similarly, Apple released earnings that beat Wall Street estimates by 10 cents per share. Overshadowing margin concerns, earnings and a positive reaction from investors were driven by Mac sales that grew at a rate of 51% year over year compared to the entire PC market's growth rate of just 12%. Apple also benefited from its global presence, which has been another source of defensive strength highlighted in this quarter's tech earnings. IBM is a prime example. The company reported earnings per share of $1.65 compared to the consensus estimate of $1.46, fueled largely by global growth. The company maintains a 66% percent exposure to markets outside the U.S. and in the past quarter, revenue in Europe grew by 16%, in Asia by 14%, but in the U.S. revenue grew just 6% and that was surprisingly strong. In addition, IBM reported weak hardware sales, but because of its scope, slowed growth in that division was covered by strength in its services segment. Google, too, handily beat the Street's expectations with their earnings results. The company reported earnings per share that was 32 cents above the mean estimate from analysts. While U.S. growth actually slowed and paid click growth was down 10% from the fourth quarter, one of the key points in the release was that international revenue grew at a rate of over 14%. That global growth helped bolster Google's defense against a slowing domestic economy helping to deliver to the strong quarterly numbers. The US economy has undoubtedly slowed in recent months. For most of the technology sector's biggest bellweathers though, that weakness has not proven to be as effective in dragging down earnings as forecasts generally anticipated. Again, this has been Phil Abram with your Thomson Reuters Tech Earnings recap. Tags: Thomson Reuters Financial Corporate Advisory Services Strategic Research Investor Relations |

V2B. One Year of Earnings might not tell you that Much. Companies are often valued on earnings or multiples of earnings - for example the P/E ratio. One year of earnings might not tell you that much however because earnings can be volatile - especially if revenues/sales change.
