Endeavour: Day One The Endeavour mission is just under way and the astronauts are already busy. After a picture-perfect launch on Wednesday evening and a musical wake-up call from NASA on Thursday morning, the crew has begun its work. With coaching from Mission Control, astronauts guided the robot arm, studded with lasers and black and white cameras, for a close look at the underside and wings of Endeavour, but that's not all there is to see. Endeavour Astronauts Visit Disney World Disney World patrons were treated to a little extra magic on Monday when astronauts from the space shuttle Endeavor paid a visit. The entire Endeavor crew came to talk to area high school students and some lucky fourth- and fifth-graders about their experience in space. Space shuttle Endeavour returned to Kennedy Space Center safely on Aug. 20 following a mission to the International Space Station. Teacher and astronaut Barbara Morgan was honored with a plaque that was placed at the Mission: Space attraction. The plaque is located on a wall of honor and was unveiled following a launch-style countdown. Endeavour on the Flip Side Watch Space shuttle Endeavour perform a back flip in space as it approaches the International Space Station. About an hour before docking, STS-123 Commander Dominic Gorie and Pilot Gregory H. Johnson guided the shuttle through a back-flip maneuver, giving the Expedition 16 crew the opportunity to take pictures of the orbiter's protective heat-resistant tiles. These photos will be sent to engineers on Earth for analysis. As the shuttle bellies up to the station, the station crew has about 9 minutes to snap up as many photos as it can. The digital snapshots are downlinked to Earth to check for chips and dings on the surface of the tiles, which act as the vehicle's heat shield. Tiles range in thickness from a quarter-inch to four-and-a-half inches thick. The space shuttle leading edges and the nose cone are made of reinforced carbon-carbon material capable of withstanding temperatures up to 3,600 degrees, now that's a hottie! Space Shuttle Launch - Endeavour - STS-123 Launch: March 11, 2008 2:28 a.m. EDT Launch Pad: 39A, Kennedy Space Center, Florida --------------------------------------- Space shuttle Endeavour vaulted off the launch pad lighting up the night sky with a crew of seven to deliver the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency's Kibo laboratory and a Canadian robotics system to the International Space Station. NASA astronaut Dominic Gorie commanded the STS-123 mission, which included Pilot Gregory H. Johnson, and Mission Specialists Rick Linnehan, Robert L. Behnken, Mike Foreman, Garrett Reisman and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency's astronaut, Takao Doi. After the flawless launch, Endeavour's record-breaking 12-day stay at the station and five ambitious and successful spacewalks, the astronauts accomplished all of their assignments, including some get-ahead tasks for the upcoming STS-124 mission. The shuttle crew, working with the Expedition 16 members, attached the first section of the Kibo component to the station -- Kibo means 'hope' in Japanese. Three spacewalks later the two-armed robotics system known as Dextre was up and running. Completing 6.6 million miles and nearly 16 days in space, the shuttle crew was ready for the journey home. Low clouds over and around the Shuttle Landing Facility at NASA's Kennedy Space Center thwarted the first landing attempt. The second opportunity brought shuttle Endeavour and its crew safely back to Earth at 8:39 p.m. EDT, March 26. The European Space Agency's astronaut, Leopold Eyharts, returned with the STS-123 crew after living on the outpost since early February. Reisman, a first-time space flyer, replaced Eyharts as Expedition 16-17 Flight Engineer. Twin sonic booms were heard over Florida's Space Coast a few minutes before the orbiter glided down out of the night sky onto the runway for a perfect touchdown. Endeavour's night landing was the 22nd in space shuttle history and the 16th night landing at Kennedy. STS-61, Endeavour (December 2, 1993) On December 2, 1993, the space shuttle Endeavour lifted off from Launch Complex 39-B at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. This was the first servicing mission on the Hubble Space Telescope, which was placed into orbit by the space shuttle Discovery in April, 1990. The seven-person crew on board Endeavour completed a then-record five spacewalks, as they restored Hubble's infamously impaired sight. STS-61 launched in the dark, and landed in the dark eleven days later, on December 13. This launch was captured over the air on NASA TV, with the footage starting approximately one minute before liftoff and ending shortly after SRB separation. Endeavour Launch While visiting my family in Florida this past week, I was fortunate enough to be able to see first person, the Endeavor Shuttle Launch. This video does not do it justice, especially with the low cloud cover. It was gone as quickly as it took off. However this may end up being the last of very few night launches, so we considered ourselves very lucky! Tags: Endeavour, Shuttle, Space, Titusville, NASA, |

STS 69 - Space Shuttle Endeavour The 11-day mission will feature the second flight of the Wake Shield Facility (WSF), a saucer-shaped satellite that will fly free of the Shuttle for several days. The WSF will grow thin films in a near perfect vacuum created by the wake of the satellite as it it moves through space. The crew also will deploy and retrieve the Spartan 201 astronomy satellite, perform a six-hour spacewalk to test assembly techniques for the international Space Station and test thermal improvements made to space suits used during space walks.
