Eurobasket 07 - Spain vs Russia 16/09 CHAMPIONS OF EUROPE! By David Hein 16 September 2007 J.R. Holden's jumper with 2.1 seconds left secured Russia their first-ever EuroBasket title with a thrilling 60-59 victory over reigning world champions and hosts Spain. Pau Gasol had a chance to win the game at the buzzer but his mid-range jumpshot went in and out, leaving Spain to collect their sixth European silver medal. Jon Robert Holden (Russia) It was J.R. Holden who delivered the final blow for Russia, hitting a jumper with two seconds left. Andrei Kirilenko collected Most Valuable Player honours for the tournament after collecting 17 points, five rebounds, two assists, one blocked shot and a steal with 59 seconds remaining. That swipe led to a basket by Nikita Morgunov to pull Russia to within 59-58 with 43 seconds to play. Holden grabbed his own steal with 28 seconds left against Gasol in the post. The American-born guard shook himself open and launched a long jumper which hit the rim and came back down in. The crown was Russia's first ever after the Soviet Union won 14 European gold medals. It was also their third medal overall following silver in 1993 and bronze in 1997. Spain's silver medal goes with those from 1935, 1973, 1983, 1999 and 2003. Holden finished with eight points while Aleksey Savrasenko scored 10 points and Victor Khryapa collected seven points, 12 rebounds, four assists, three steals and a blocked shot before fouling out with four minutes to go. "Hopefully this will be the first of many titles. Spain are a great team, but we just played really well tonight," said Kirilenko. "We made Spain nervous and we played as a team. I might be the MVP but it's been a team effort all the way." Gasol finished with 14 points, 14 rebounds, three assists and three blocked shots but the NBA superstar also missed five of eight foul shots in the fourth quarter (5-of-12 overall) and committed five turnovers. "You must understand that today is a very sad day for us. I admit I wasn't at my best. But I take responsibilty for that," Gasol said. "On the last shot, I thought I saw the ball going in, maybe I should have taken another step forward." Jose Calderon scored a team-high 15 points while Jorge Garbajosa added eight points and six rebounds. While Russia started cold, the Spaniards got the crowd into the game with the three-ball. Rudy Fernandez opened the scoring with a trey and Calderon followed suit with two triples José Calderón (Spain) José Calderón delivered for Spain with 15 points but will have to settle for silver. in opening a 15-4 lead midway through the first period. The Russians missed 11 of their first 13 shots - including five three-pointers - as they failed in their attempt to match the hosts from outside. Sergey Monya did knock down a trey but Marc Gasol's five foul shots and Carlos Cabezas's buzzer-beating jumper re-established the 11-point advantage - 22-11 - after one period. After falling behind 25-13, Russia buckled down on defense in holding Spain scoreless for more than three minutes and cutting the deficit to 25-19. The Spanish bombers struck again though as threes by Calderon, Carlos Jimenez and Pau Gasol kept Pepu Hernandez's team ahead 34-25. The Russians again held Spain scoreless for three minutes and fought to within 34-31 at half-time on Anton Ponkrashov's foul shots with six seconds in the half. Spain drew a number of fouls early in the third period and found themselves in the bonus with 6:51 to play in the quarter. They failed to take advantage of it until Kirilenko was charged with this fourth foul and had to be taken out at the 2:32 mark of the third. Jimenez's two foul shots made it 49-41. Russia refused to give up and continued to work hard defensively and Khryapa's trey had Russia down just 49-46 going into the fourth. Zakhar Pashutin tied the game at 49-49 with a long bomb and Holden gave Russia their first lead 51-49 on a driving lay-up with 9:02 left. Spain eventually pulled away on Pau Gasol's inside basket for a 59-54 lead but Gasol missed the chance for a three-point play and Kirilenko came back down to hit two foul shots with 1:17 left to set up the last minute heroics. Eurobasket 07 - Germany vs Lithuania 05/09 05 September 2007 Lithuania Survive Germany Rally Lithuania nearly gave up a 21-point third quarter lead but held on just enough to beat Germany 84-80 and finish Group C of the 2007 EuroBasket undefeated at 3-0 going into the qualifying round. Rimantas Kaukenas made two foul shots with 2.6 seconds left to secure the win while Sarunas Jasikevicius led the way with 15 points, 10 assists and four rebounds. Darjus Lavrinovic had 18 points while Ramunas Siskausas chipped in 13 for the winners. "We just need to keep plugging along. Over the past three days, we've come together as a team. As long as we keep improving we have a chance to do something. But as we all know the tournament is long," Jasikevicius said. Germany trailed 60-39 midway through the third quarter but proceeded to drain six three-pointers to pull back to within two, 70-68, early in the final period. FIBA Europe / Castoria / Tilo Wiedensohler Nowitzki once again led the way for Germany but they fell just short The Germans missed four straight treys as they tried to take the lead before Lithuania pulled back ahead 79-70 with 2:55 to play. Another three-pointer and two foul shots by Dirk Nowitzki made it 81-80 with 11 seconds left. Darius Songalia made just one of two foul shots with 9.6 seconds to play but Germany's Ademola Okulaja was charged with an offensive foul on his drive back down the court with 4.3 seconds left, setting up Kaukenas's two foul shots. "We played well at the start of the game. In the middle we started to have some problems. We had too much focus on Dirk Nowitzki and forgot the other players, who hit two or three unreal shots. We just played up and down. So the finish of the game was really big for us and now we can focus on our next opponent," said Lithuania coach Ramunas Butautas. Germany were led by Nowitzki's 28 points, nine rebounds, two assists and two blocked shots. Okulaja had 12 points and seven rebounds while Robert Garrett chipped in 10 points. "We had our opportunities late in the game. We hit a couple of threes and then that unfortunate play at the end of the game -- we were that close to winning the game," German coach Dirk Bauermann said. "I really have to applaud my team for coming back and playing as hard and well as we did in the second half. We showed tremendous heart and pride. But for us, there's no such thing as a good loss. They might have been the favourites but we could have beat that team and I think we should have." Nowitzki and Okulaja drained three-pointers as Germany jumped ahead 9-4 early. The game was tied 15-15 when Bauermann was hit with a technical foul, which Lithuania converted into a five-point possession with two Jasikevicius free-throws and a three-pointer by Kaukenas. That sparked a 17-2 finish to the first period, which included threes by Linas Kleiza and Siskausas and had Lithuania up 30-17. Germany's offensive struggles continued into the second period with Bauermann's team not scoring a basket until Steffen Hamann's lay-up with 4:21 left before the break. Spanning the first and second quarters, Germany made just one basket in a 9:49 stretch as Lithuania opened a 19-point lead, 42-23. The nightmare second quarter finished with Germany hitting just two of 16 (12%) from the field as Lithuania led 49-32 going into the break. Lithuania pushed the advantage to 21 points with 5:59 left in the third, but Germany used an 11-2 run to narrow the deficit to 12, 62-50. Simas Jasaitis and Darjus Lavrinovic did knock down three-pointers only to see Pascal Roller's driving left-handed lay-up fall at the buzzer for a 68-57 Lithuania lead going into the fourth. Germany opened the final 10 minutes on an 11-2 run but were never able to forge ahead. Lithuania and Germany advance to the qualifying round in Madrid along with the winner of the Czech Republic-Turkey game later tonight. Eurobasket 07 - Spain vs Russia 09/09 09 September 2007 No Way Past Jose Jose Calderon led a rampant Spain past previously unbeaten Russia 81-69 at the Telefonica Arena in Madrid on Sunday night. Calderon, the Toronto Raptors point guard, scored nine of his team-high 17 points in the third quarter when Spain took control and built a 12-point lead. They led by as many as 15 points in the final quarter and were never seriously threatened by David Blatt's Russians. Beaten in their last Group B game by Croatia, the world champions have recovered nicely with triumphs over Greece and now Russia. "It's an important victory for us," Juan Carlos Navarro said. "Russia are a very difficult team to play against, they have a complete team. It's complicated to play against a team whose perimeter players can penetrate and shoot and the inside players can run and shoot, too." The Spanish trailed 23-20 after the first quarter, during which Russia were 5-of-7 from 3-point range. Andrei Kirilenko (Russia) Despite being in foul trouble, Kirilenko finished with 21 points Andrei Kirilenko hit a three-ball for the first points of the game and then after Spain took a 7-3 lead, Victor Kryapa buried three straight from the arc in a 9-2 run to put the visitors into a 12-9 advantage. Calderon's second 3-pointer of the game with 28 seconds remaining in the quarter closed the gap to 23-20, and then Spain went on a 10-0 run over the first four minutes of the third quarter to lead 30-23 lead. Russia would claw their way back and level the score at 32-32 on a pair of Kirilenko free throws with 2:53 left in the half, but a basket by Jorge Garbajosa immediately put Spain back in front and they led the rest of the way. By half-time, Spain were in front 40-35 and at the end of third quarter, they led 63-51. The closest Russia would get in the fourth quarter was 76-67 on a Kryapa 3-pointer with 2:55 remaining. The next points were scored by Felipe Reyes with a jump shot at the free throw line as Spain won comfortably. "We've played a very serious game because we knew that Russia were a good team," Calderon said. "We have played using our heads, especially in the second half. The fact that we weren't able to pull away further is a credit to Russia. "But I'm nevertheless pleased that we won by a 12-point margin." Pepu Hernandez was relieved after the final buzzer. "This was a very important win because we played against an extraordinary team," he said. "They played well and are well coached. We had trouble adjusting at times but the way we defended was great. I was happy that we adjusted our defense. We played intelligently and that's hard to do against a team like Russia. Juan Carlos Navarro had 15 points, Pau Gasol 13 and both Reyes and Garbajosa 11 for Spain, who are so deep and so talented that Portland Trail Blazers guard Sergio Rodriguez and Unicaja Malaga shooting guard Berni Rodriguez did not even get into the game. Russia coach David Blatt knew it would be a big ask to beat Spain but felt like his players did cause the home side some problems. Nevertheless, he would have liked to have seen a more balanced approach on offense. "We took too many shots from long range," he said. "They allow that and we fell into it too many times. "You have to play defense and minimize their easy baskets, and we failed there. "We didn't defend well late on the shot clock, didn't do a good job in the pick-and-roll and could have done a better job in the rebounds. "With all that, it's difficult to beat a team like Spain. We played hard, we played to win, but we weren't good enough so we'll wait for the next time." Russia did limit the contributions of Gasol, which pleased Blatt. "Most teams here would be happy to hold Pau Gasol on 13 points, so I think we did a good job defensively on him." On Tuesday, Spain play Israel while Russia take on Croatia. Eurobasket 07 - Greece vs Lithuania 16/09 16 September 2007 Bronze For Lithuania The two last champions of Europe from 2003 and 2005 met on Sunday evening in Palacio de Deportes in Madrid and when the smoke cleared Lithuania beat Greece 78-69. Lithuania hit two birds with one stone. By winning the game they'll get to wear the bronze medal on the EuroBasket 2007 podium later on tonight, and also earned the third European ticket to the Olympic games in 2008. Theodoros Papaloukas (Greece) Theo Papaloukas had eight points in the loss. Greece wanted to win a third medal in a row, but saw a tough Lithuanian group who recovered in time from the surprising loss to Russia in the semi-finals last night. Ramunas Siskauskas continued his great form from the last games and downed a couple of three-pointers in crunch time to secure the win. This time he was joined by Ksistof Lavrinovic and Linas Kleiza who shot very well both inside and outside the arc, to make sure Greece will stay behind for the vast majority of the game. "It's not a gold medal but I'll take this," said Darius Songaila after the game. "For sure it's a great feeling. Now we're going to focus on the Olympics." Sarunas Jasikevicius, who hammered the last nail in Greece's coffin, finished with 11 points and five assists despite a slow start. Greece, once again, had only one player with a good shooting night, and this time it was Nikos Zisis. He dropped in 23 points on 58% shooting from the field, but the total of the team was poor. The team of coach Yannakis shot only 35%, and couldn't find the way to break the Lithuanian offense, despite forcing 13 turnovers. Lavrinovic was in a zone in the first minutes, scoring seven points in a row for Lithuania, to make it 7-2 early in the game. Greece didn't fall behind for long, played tougher on defense and with a 6-0 run got back into the game. Sarunas Jasikevicius struggled in the first quarter, and for the last basket of the quarter Ramunas Siskauskas (Lithuania) Ramunas Siskauskas had 13 points in leading Lithuania to the bronze medal. Dimitrios Diamantidis stole it from him going coast-to-coast for the lay up and making it 20-19 Lithuania after the first quarter. Both teams had already six players involved with points after ten minutes, and they continued to rely on them. Greece collected some offensive boards to take the lead back, but that didn't scare Ksistof Lavrnovic who stepped up with four more points, and gave Lithuania the lead back. The game went a little out of control as the referees called a double unsportsmanlike foul on Diamantidis and Darius Songaila, and then came a technical on Lazaros Papadopoulos, which was his third. Lithuania used the mess to take a 39-30 lead with 2:32 left in the half, and cap a 13-1 run, on the way to a seven point lead at the end of the half, 41-34. Greece kept fighting their way back to the game, and never allowed Lithuania to get too far ahead, but eight points in a row by Kleiza, including two hits from long range, made sure the former champs would not come back. Ksistof Lavrinovic recorded his 15th, 16th and 17th point with a three point play, to offset a 6-0 Greek run and allow Lithuania enter the last quarter up 62-54. Greece tried to go with Spanoulis time after time but earned only two points on that, while Siskauskas was hot on the other end to make it 70-58. Darius Lavrinovic and then Siskauskas blocked Greek shots to keep the margin on double-digits. When the later nailed two big ones in a row from long range Greece needed a miracle to take the game, down by 11 with 2:02 to play. Lithuania earned their first ever bronze medal and fifth medal in total in a EuroBasket. Greece finished fourth and lost the bronze medal game for the fourth time in their history. Eurobasket 07 - Spain vs Germany 13/09 13 September 2007 Spain March On To Semis Two years ago, Jose Manuel Calderon missed a three-pointer at the buzzer as Spain lost to Germany in the 2005 EuroBasket semi-finals. On Thursday the star point guard made sure it wouldn't come down to the final shot, scoring 17 points in spear-heading the world champions' 83-55 drubbing of Germany. Jose Calderon (ESP) Jose Calderon led the way for Spain with 17 points. Rudy Fernandez and Juan Carlos Navarro both added 12 points for the superb Spain attack, shooting 57% and the Spanish defense held Dirk Nowitzki to 11 points and the German offense to 33% shooting in their quarter-final showdown in Madrid's Palacio de Deportes. "We are where we wanted to be, which is the semi-finals. We have the crowd behind us, we are playing as one and we have to take advantage of this," said Calderon. "We never looked at the score today. All we wanted was to put pressure on Germany and take advantage of their mistakes. Our style is to play with the same intensity for 40 minutes. We have played really well on defense, helping each other out and we have been successful in limiting Dirk Nowitzki." With the victory, Spain exacted a bit of revenge following Germany's 74-73 victory over Spain in 2005 in Serbia, where Nowitzki buried a baseline jumper over the out-stretched arm of Jorge Garbajosa to pull ahead with three seconds left before Calderon missed a three-pointer at the buzzer. Spain also had beaten Germany twice in the preparations for this tournament - both times in Spain and both times by 16 points. "This was a good game to watch as a coach. It was enjoyable to see how the players put on great performances," Spain coach Pepu Hernandez said. "One strong point of our team is that we're not predictable. We have various combinations that maybe the opponents don't think we will use. And also we're able to make defense fun for our players. They enjoy playing defense which is not always easy." "It was tough for us. Twenty-four hours ago we played our most crucial game of the tournament against Italy. So it's hard to play a day later in another big game, espeically against the hosts," said German coach Dirk Bauermann. Hernandez's team will next face in Saturday's semi-finals the winner of Friday's last quarter-final - either defending champions Greece or Slovenia. Nowitzki buried a three-pointer to open the scoring, but with 8:33 left in the first quarter and Germany ahead 3-2, technical difficulties postponed the game for nearly 15 minutes and the shot clock was unable to be used the rest of the first half. When the game got back under way, Germany pulled ahead 9-8, but Garbajosa and Fernandez drained back-to-back three-pointers to push the hosts up 16-9. Johannes Herber knocked down a trey of his own at the buzzer to bring Germany to within 18-14 after one period. Bauermann's team refused to go away and Nowitzki nailed a three-pointer and Mithat Demirel evened the game at 20-20. Navarro, however, answered with back-to-back three-pointers and Calderon scored nine of Spain's final 14 points in the half as they went on a 9-0 run to lead 40-27 at the break. Spain already led 52-36 midway through the third period but used a 12-2 spurt to blow the game open for good with a 64-38 cushion. Germany trailed 66-43 after three periods and saw Spain score the first 14 points of the fourth period - 80-43 - and never closed to within 28 points the rest of the way. Germany take on the loser of that Greece-Slovenia match in the 5th-8th place classification games - with seventh place meaning a spot in the pre-Olympic qualifying tournament. Galis vs USSR ( eurobasket 1987 final, 40 points ) Nikos Galis...A LEGEND!!! (scored 40 points that night). The final score: Greece-USSR 103-101. Former NBA established defender, Sarunas Marciulionis, was Galis' personal guard in the game. He once mentioned him as one of the toughest opponents he ever had to face, when asked by an NBA reporter, who of course had no idea! Too pitty Europe learned about Nick when he was old, and not as athletic as in the early 80s. In 1987,he seams twice as athletic as young and mighty Marciulionis, but imagine he's 30 years old. Galis could easily dunk even at that age, even being only 6,1 feet(1.83). But he disliked dunking, despite learning the game in the states (dunk mania was not there yet, though). He dunked several times in 1980-81 season, when he was only 23 years old, but those dunks have only been recorded by a photographer, and not by a video camera. (the game was not popular those days in Greece). In that season, Nick averaged 44 points per game. Dammit. We've seen so little of him! Eurobasket 07 - Spain vs Greece 07/09 Spain Back On Track By David Hein 08 September 2007 World champions Spain shook off their last-second loss to Croatia by dismantling defending champions Greece 76-58 to remain well in the race for the 2007 EuroBasket title in Group E. Rudy Fernandez paced the tournament hosts with 20 points while Pau Gasol added 15 points, five rebounds and five assists and Felipe Reyes chipped in 10 points as Spain again cruised past Greece, who lost 70-47 in the final of the 2006 FIBA World Championship in Japan. "I'm really happy because of the great job of the team. I'm happy with the tightness in our defense. We had a great team effort defensively and that helped us get out on the fast- Theodoros Papaloukas (Greece) Theo Papaloukas and Greece struggled to get their offense going Friday night. break," said Spanish coach Pepu Hernandez, whose team shot 49% from the floor and held Greece to 38% shooting, including just six-of-25 (24%) from beyond the three-point arc. Rudy Fernandez commented; "We were able to control the rebounds during the game and we were particularly accurate with the perimeter players." "We were able to control the tempo for most of the game. They played up-tempo for a bit but we slowed them down. I think we owe the win to our good defense," said Fernandez. "Everyone contributes, everyone plays his role and that's why we are here. That's why we were able to beat Greece." Spain, who improved to 2-1 with the victory, faced a must-win situation after falling to Croatia 85-84 in the final game of Group B in the preliminary round. As did the Greeks, who dropped to 1-2 after their second straight loss. Both teams started cold offensively as Dimitrios Diamantidis opened the scoring on a driving lay-up after three minutes had been played. Carlos Jimenez came back down and drained a three-pointer for the Spaniards. While Jimenez kick-started the hosts, the Greeks' offensive problems continued as they failed to score on four straight possessions, allowing the Spanish to pull ahead 10-2. Juan Carlos Navarro entered the tournament for the first time with 4:17 remaining, finally shaking off the abductor injury which forced him to miss the first three games. Navarro buried two foul shots and a three-pointer after a technical foul on Greek coach Panagiotis Yannakis and two free throws by Rudy Fernandez gave Spain their first 10-point lead - 21-11 - with two minutes to play in the first, which ended with Pepu Hernandez's side ahead 23-15. The Spaniards continued to work hard on defense and held Greece scoreless for the first 4:10 of the second period until Nikolaos Chatzivrettas's three-point play to make it 28-18. But the Greeks were still unable to snap out of their funk as Spain ended the first half on a 9-0 run for a 45-24 advantage going into the break. Konstantinos Tsartsaris opened the second half with a three-pointer, but the Greeks' inability to knock down the long-range shots killed any chances of coming back. Spain led 56-39 after three periods and watched Greece close the gap to 12 points - 56-44 - on Theodoros Papaloukas's jumper with 6:41 to play. Pau Gasol knocked down two foul shots and Benni Rodriguez hit a break-away lay-up to re-establish a 16-point advantage just 30 seconds later. The Greeks were unable to get closer than 15 the rest of the way and next face a do-or-die match on Sunday against Croatia. Giannakis said his team failed to find consistency in their game: "First half, Spain took advantage of our mistakes. In the second half we tried to make something happen. We cut the deficit but we made more mistakes and that was the key. I think we can play better if we have a clearer idea of what we want to do. Our first-half performance was what made the difference." The Spaniards look to continue their push towards the quarter-finals with a tough showdown with undefeated Russia. Eurobasket 07 - Germany vs Turkey 04/09 04 September 2007 Germany Hand Turkey Second Loss The 2005 silver medallists Germany remained perfect at the 2007 EuroBasket after a surprisingly dominating 79-49 victory over Turkey in Group C in Palma de Mallorca. Dirk Nowitzki collected 24 points, six rebounds, two assists and one blocked shot while Ademola Okulaja was just one rebound from a second straight double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds as Germany looked much more confident than a night earlier. "I felt we learned a lot from last night's game (an over-time win over the Czech Republic). We learned how we can play and cannot play. We didn't move the ball at all. But we did that tonight. And that's very important because it gets Dirk (Nowitzki) better shots and other people better shots as well," said German coach Dirk Bauermann. "Everybody contributed in some way. We're really happy that we won and beat a very good team in Turkey. Winning the first two games is big for us, and we will now try to find a way to beat Lithuania." Turkey coach Bogdan Tanjevic was clearly frustrated after another blowout defeat - a night after losing 86-69 to Lithuania on Monday. "I can't explain what happened. We can't let our opponents play how they want to. If you want to play in Europe, you can't let teams like Lithuania and Germany shoot 50% from the floor and hold us to 30% shooting. I have no other explanation. We had 45 days and we had good tactical preparation as well. There was no sign that we would play like we did," said the Turkish boss. Engin Atsür (Turkey) Engin Atsür and Turkey suffered their second heavy defeat Germany came out moving the ball much more effectively than they did against the Czechs and Okulaja opened the first half with two three-pointers as Germany pulled ahead 16-11 after one period. Two Nowitzki free-throws pushed the lead to 25-16 early in the second period and Turkey hurt their cause by missing seven of 10 foul shots, including two straight back-to-back by Hidayet Turkoglu and Mehmet Okur. Nowitzki scored Germany's final eight points and helped his team open a 15-point lead, 40-25, before going into the locker-room ahead 40-27. Bauermann's side came out of the locker-room working hard on defense and hitting from long range. Demond Greene and Nowitzki hit three-pointers to open a 46-27 advantage and Turkey failed to score early in the second half until Turkoglu's three-pointer with 5:34 remaining in the third period. Germany would eventually push the bulge to 23 points - on a long three-pointer by Jan Jagla for 58-35 - and they were ahead 58-39 going into the fourth quarter. They scored the first eight points of the final frame, opened a 66-39 lead with six minutes left and Turkey would get no closer than 25 points the rest of the way while Germany led by as many as 33 points. Turkoglu was Turkey's only player to score in double figures with 15 points as Germany held their opponents to 30% shooting (17-of-56) for the game. Germany face off with Lithuania on Wednesday to see which team takes first place in Group C while Turkey play the Czech Republic in a battle of 0-2 teams with the winner moving on to the qualifying round. Eurobasket 07 - Turkey vs Slovenia 08/09 08 September 2007 Slovenia Slays Turks A balanced attack led Slovenia to a 66-51 victory over Turkey in Group F of the 2007 EuroBasket and helped the Slovenians remain undefeated at 3-0 in Spain. Uros Slokar provided a huge spark off the bench with 12 points in 19 minutes as Slovenia went on a 21-1 surge spanning the third and fourth quarters for a comfortable victory. Radoslav Nesterovic led Slovenia with 13 points while Goran Dragic added 11 points, four rebounds and three assists and Jaka Lakovic chipped in five points, seven rebounds and three assists. "In the first half, both teams made a lot of mistakes. In the second half we stepped on it and started to play better defense. Congratulations to my players. The next games are Germany and Lithuania and we can play with less pressure," said Slovenia coach Ales Pipan. "I guess we've given something to the people back home in Slovenia to party about tonight." "It's not really about my three-point shots. I think without the defense on their main guys we wouldn't have done that. I was just lucky that I was there at the right time and I made them and it helped my team," said the game-winner Slokar. "I just stepped up and hit the three-pointers, but most importantly, that allowed us to get back into some rhythm. And it all started working again." Mehmet Okur (Turkey) Okur had a night to forget going 5 for 16 from the field The Turks dropped to 0-3 in the group despite 17 points from Hidayet Turkoglu and 14 from Mehmet Okur. But Bogdan Tanjevic's side made just four-of-25 three-pointers (16%) and nine-of-16 foul shots. "They played better than us and won. We have to just look forward, put this loss behind us and win as much as we can," said Turkoglu, who also grabbed eight rebounds. "It was a good game, a close game, but Slokar came off the bench and made some big three-pointers and it changed the whole game." Neither team really could stamp their authority on the game in the first quarter, which ended with Slovenia ahead 20-15. Their lead was up to 10 points, 27-17, on Slokar's free-throw midway through the second quarter. But Turkey finally turned up their game and reeled off a 12-4 run to close the first half to trail by just two, 31-29, at the break Turkoglu evened things up at 33-33 with a breakaway dunk in the early stages of the third period and Bogdan Tanjevic's troops soon found themselves ahead 39-36. But Slokar gave the Slovenians a spark off the bench, dishing out an assist, hitting two three-pointers and grabbing an offensive rebound as Ales Pipan's men went on a 10-0 spurt and led 46-40 after three periods. They continued their push in the fourth quarter, going on an 11-0 run to take a 57-40 lead with just over four minutes left. All told, Slovenia outscored Turkey 21-1 over the late third quarter and the start of the final frame and didn't allow their opponents to score in the period until Turkoglu's free-throw with 4:08 remaining. The NBA star did score six straight points and Engin Atsur drained a three-pointer to trim the margin to 59-49. But Turkey would get no closer the rest of the way. Turkey are all but eliminated and face Italy on Monday. The Slovenians can move to 4-0 in Group F when they take on Germany later Monday in Madrid. Eurobasket 07 - France vs Russia 13/09 13 September 2007 Russia End 10-year Wait Russia made more of their free-throw attempts down the stretch than France did and that proved the difference as David Blatt's men won 75-71 to reach their first EuroBasket semi-final in 10 years. With the game tied at 69-69, J.R. Holden hit both his shots from the line to edge his team ahead 71-69 with 24 seconds left to play. Claude Bergeaud (Head Coach France) Spotty free throw shooting had Claude Bergeaud shaking his head. Nine seconds later, France's Boris Diaw -- who once had an 0 for 11 performance from the foul line against Slovenia in this event two years ago -- blew his chance to tie the score when he missed both attempts from the charity stripe. However, Zakhar Pashutin left the door open for Les Bleus when he did the same as Diaw. Unfortunately for the 2005 bronze medallists, Tony Parker could only make one of two and Pashutin then made amends for his mistake by sinking a pair from the charity stripe to make it a 73-70 lead with four seconds left. Russia fouled Parker again and the playmaker hit his first shot before intentionally missing the second in the hope that one of his team-mates getting an offensive rebound. But it wasn't to be. Holden admitted afterwards a lot of thought went into Russia's "fouling strategy" late in the game. "We knew that France struggled a little bit from the free-throw line. So we just didn't want to put on their shooters or Tony Parker," he admitted. "And we're happy that he missed one down the stretch. That's just how the ball bounces sometimes in basketball." "This is a big win for us. We surprised a lot of teams by getting here. We just had to stay aggressive and play our game. And we just weren't afraid and that was the difference." Blatt was the one who constantly reminded his players to be confident. "I told them to believe in themselves and that we were going to put an end to this drought (10 years without reaching a EuroBasket semi-final)," he said afterwards. They will now face the winner of tomorrow's quarter-final between Lithuania and Croatia. Russia last reached a EuroBasket semi-final in 1997 which coincidentally was the last time the tournament was held in Spain. But they were made to work very hard for the win and owed much to the fine and clutch play of Holden in the last 10 minutes. The point guard scored five of his team's points in a 7-0 run that saw them turn a 61-57 deficit into a 64-61 lead. Russia were dealt a big blow when star player Andrei Kirilenko fouled out with 3:25 left, which allowed France to even the game at 64-64. Another Holden long-range bomb and a Petr Samoylenko lay up though gave the Russians some breathing room at 69-64 with 2:35 left but Diaw made a lay up and Parker hit a clutch three just over a minute later to tie the game at 69-69. However, Russia were the more accurate team from the foul line in the final minute and it proved to be the deciding factor. Afterwards, Parker -- who earlier in the tournament missed a clutch free-throw to tie the game in France's group stage game against Slovenia -- made no excuses as France failed to reach their second consecutive EuroBasket semi-final . "There's little to say, we had our chances and we didn't make them," he said bluntly. "It's frustrating, we will have to look at the video and see where we went wrong. Russia are a good team, they played well and they made the most of the chances." Claude Bergeaud's men led for a large part of the game after using a 17-7 run in the second quarter to turn a 27-23 deficit into a 40-34 lead behind a three-point barrage by Tariq Kirksay, Cedric Ferchaud and Florent Pietrus. Russia though clawed their way back behind Victor Khryapa to trail by just three, 42-39, at half time. And they kept the game close after the break as both teams combined for 13 turnovers in a very sloppy third quarter. France lost their composure in the final period long before their free-throw woes came back to haunt them as their accuracy from long range deserted them and they struggled to create any good scoring opportunities as Russia buckled down on defense. Les Bleus were an abysmal nine of 20 from the free-throw line (45%) while Russia were only marginally better hitting nine of their 17 attempts (53%). Khryapa had a team-high 16 points for Russia with Holden adding 15 and Morgunov chipping in with 14 off the bench. Diaw had a game-high 17 points and Parker was France's only other player to score in double figures with 15 points. France will now play for the 5th to 8th places. Tags: Eurobasket 07 France Russia |

Eurobasket 07 - Turkey vs Lithuania 03/09 04 September 2007 Lithuania Too Much For Turkey Lithuania made Sarunas Jasikevicius's return to the National Team a special one as the 2003 EuroBasket champions cruised past Turkey 86-69 to grab an opening day victory in Group C. Jasikevicius, widely regarded as one of Europe's best players, fought off a knee injury to collect 18 points, eight rebounds and seven assists in a dominating Lithuania win. Rimantas Kaukenas added 14 points while Linas Kleiza and Darius Songalia each had 12 points, and Ramunas Siskauskas added 10. "This was a difficult game for us. It was the start of the European championship and against a very strong Turkey team. They are great team and have one of the best coaches in Europe. The start was very hard, but we played a lot better later, especially in the defence. But this is just the first game of the tournament," said Lithuania coach Ramunas Butautas. Butautas's team out-rebounded Turkey 42-31, off-setting a shaky showing from beyond the three-point arc as the Lithuanians made just six-of-18 treys. "We knew we definitely needed to start good. Turkey is an emotional team and we knew they would start strong. But it's just one win. There are still eight more to go," added Kleiza. Turkey, who were led by 18 points from Hidayet Turkoglu and 17 from Ibrahim Kutluay, led 10-5 in the early stages. But 10 first quarter points by Siskauskas pushed Lithuania ahead 19-16 after one period. Turkey were in front for the final time 24-23 on Kutluay's three-pointer, as a Jasikevicius three-pointer sparked a 10-0 run. The lead grew to as high as 12 before Lithuania went into the locker-room ahead 44-36. Butautas's side opened the second half on a 10-2 run for a 54-38 lead. Turkey trailed 63-48 after three periods and eventually closed to within 10 points on two occasions, but Jasikevicius, Songalia and Kleiza all hit three-pointers down the stretch to keep Turkey away. Turkey coach Bogdan Tanjevic said Lithuania belongs among the favourites of the tournament, adding: "We found them on a roll tonight. I think they are one of the best teams in Europe. And they played a great game tonight. They showed all the talent they have and beat us in everything." Turkey take on Germany on Tuesday while Lithuania face the Czech Republic. Eurobasket 07 - Croatia vs Lithuania 14/09 14 September 2007 Lithuania Slip Past Croatia, Into Semis Zoran Planinic missed two foul shots with 1.02 seconds remaining, allowing Lithuania to hold off a motivated Croatia 74-72 and book their spot in Saturday's semi-finals against Russia. Darius Songalia scored 20 points, grabbed seven rebounds and gave Lithuania the winning basket with 46 seconds left. Linas Kleiza collected 19 points and nine rebounds and Sarunas Jasikevicius dished out Zoran Planinic (Croatia) Zoran Planinic led Croatia with 16 points but missed critical free throws down the stretch. eight assists as Lithuania remained the only perfect team in the competition. "It should have been an easier game, but it was very difficult for us psychologically. Croatia are a very good team, but every team in the quarter-finals is good," said Ramunas Siskauskas, who was held to just two points. "We were a bit nervous at the beginning, but not in the final seconds and that's what helped us to the win." Lithuania are hoping to repeat their 2003 run to the EuroBasket title - which they won with a perfect 6-0 run. The Baltic powers are going for European crown number four. Croatia limped into the quarter-finals having lost their last three games after beating Spain, but Jasmin Repesa's men gave Lithuania all they could handle, especially Planinic, who collected a team-high 16 points as well as three rebounds, five assists and seven steals. The Tau Vitoria guard however missed when it meant most. After Marko Popovic was off target on a three-pointer with three seconds left, Planinic was fouled with 1.02 ticks remaining. He missed the first and then purposely missed the second and Lithuania ran off the clock for the win. Popovic finished with 12 points and Marko Tomas added 10. Croatia, who will play France in the 5th-8th classification games, shot themselves in the foot, making just eight of 19 foul shots (42%) while holding Lithuania to 40% shooting (23-of-58) for the game. "We were able to get a last-second shot but unfortunately, it didn't go in," said Tomas. "Tonight, we suffered at the free throw line." Lithuania struggled to find their rhythm offensively early on and committed two turnovers while watching Croatia jump ahead 9-3 with Planinic scoring seven points. Back-to-back three-pointers by Popovic kept the Croatians ahead 17-11 before the Lithuanians pulled to within 19-17 after the first period. Planinic had scored 13 points as Croatia led 33-32. Kleiza answered with a three-point play and a three-pointer for a 38-33 Lithuania lead, but the Baltic defense allowed Marko Tomas to score off an inbounds pass for a 38-35 half-time lead. Ramunas Butautas's team again couldn't find their form early, making just one of seven shots and giving up three turnovers while Croatia went ahead 44-41with a 9-3 spurt. A Songalia three-pointer made it 53-49 for Lithuania - only to see Marin Rozic and Damir Markota drain back-to-back treys for a 55-53 Croatia lead going into the fourth. Lithuania opened the final quarter on an 11-3 run to charge ahead 64-58 but Croatia refused to give up but Kleiza and Simas Jasaitis knocked down back-to-back three-pointers to increase the cushion to 72-65 with three minutes remaining. A Tomas three-pointer cut the led to 72-70 with a minute left. Songalia drained a jumper for a four-point lead, but was then called for an unsportsmanlike foul on Planinic with 27 seconds left. Planinic made two foul shots to set up the drama in the waning seconds. Tags: Eurobasket 07 Croatia Lithuania |

Eurobasket 07 - Russia vs Lithuania 15/09 15 September 2007 The Kirilenko Show For the first time since 1993 Russia is in the EuroBasket finals, and will get a shot to win the title for the first time since 1985, back when it was still known as the USSR. Russia shocked favorites Lithuania on Saturday night in the Palacio de Deportes as David Blatt led a brilliant group who took control of the game from the tip and never trailed, but on top of it showed great character. Lithuania, coming to this game unbeatable in EuroBasket 2007, chased after the Russian Jon Robert Holden (Russia) J.R. Holden had 18 points and six rebounds in Russia's improbable win. side from the first moment. They made a heroic comeback from minus 19 to a tied game, but Russia didn't blink for a second. Andrei Kirilenko, in an amazing individual performance of 29 points and eight rebounds, carried his team to a big win, and didn't allow anybody to take this win from his team. "It was a very physical game, but we played great defense," he said after the buzzer. "Our goal coming to this EuroBakset was to reach the Olympics. We've done that and now we're aiming at the finals. If we play as we did tonight, nobody can count us out." Ramunas Siskauskas was the only one who stepped up for Lithuania. He scored 30 points, including five shots from long range, which cut into Russia's lead time after time, but couldn't secure the win alone. Russia played 40 minutes of very aggressive defense and didn't allow any Lithuanian to get anywhere close to the rim without being hammered down. The bad side was that with six minutes on the clock Russia had three big men in big foul trouble -- Morgunov, Khryapa and Savrasenko had four fouls each, but eventually none fouled out. The good side was Lithuania's front line was out of the game. Darius Songaila, Darius Lavrinovic, Ksystof Lavrinovic, Linas Kleiza and Robertas Javtokas combined only 18 points and weren't factors for Lithuania. Russia stopped Lithuania right from the start, and after six minutes one of the best Ramunas Siskauskas (Lithuania) Siskauskas tried to do it alone, leading all scorers with 30 points. offensive teams in EuroBasket had only scored three points. Russia took advantage of that to jump out to an 18-3 lead. Siskauskas and Simas Jasaitis connected on some three-pointers to give Lithuania some life, trailing 20-11, but Russia took a 25-12 lead after ten minutes. Blatt's side opened the second quarter with two hits from downtown by Victor Khryapa and another by Morgunov. When Kirilenko added a tip-in, it was a 19 point game, 33-14, but it wasn't over yet. Up by 17 Khryapa stole the ball at mid-court and was on his way to send a message with a big dunk. He missed and Rimas Kaukenas nail a corner three pointer at the other end, setting the score at 33-19 and starting the comeback. Saras returned off the bench to hit a three-pointer of his own with a minute to go in the first half and Russia's lead was narrowed to no more than six, but the action wasn't over yet. Lithuania finished the half down by seven, 40-33, and three minutes inside the second half was all the way back in the game. Saras hit a mid-range jumper and dished an assist for a three-pointer by Jasaitis who made it 45-42. Russia hung on to the lead with every nail and muscle, but Lithuania's aggressive defense and great execution made it a new game. Siskauskas hit five in a row to force Blatt to call a time-out, this time without the lead anymore, 52-52 with a little over four minutes to play in the third. Big players step up in big moments, and that's what Kirilenko was about to do. Six points in a row followed by a big block on Linas Kleiza sent Russia on an eight point lead again, 60-52. When Khryapa nailed his third three-pointer of the night and set the margin on 11 again, Lithuania was called on a challenge -- to prove they have the character to come back again. Squeezing their last drops of courage Lithuania answered immediately. Siska hit two from the line, instantly stole the ball and finished with a big dunk and opened the last quarter with a three pointer to cap an individual 7-0 run and make it 65-61. But tonight was Kirilenko's night, and in order to prove that he replied with a 7-0 run of his own and the gap was 11 again, with 7:48 to play in the semi-finals. With less than a minute to go the celebrations on the Russian bench emerged as a team that nobody believed in back home is in the EuroBasket finals. A group of underdogs on a mission. Russia will take on Spain in the 2007 EuroBasket finals, while Lithuania will face Greece in the game for the bronze medal, which will also be a game for the second secured ticket to the 2008 Olympics.
