Experiments in Art and Technology (E.A.T): Nine Evenings Robert Rauschenberg John Cage Deborah Hayes David Tudor Robert Whitman Oyvind Fhalstrom Robert Rauschenberg --Theater-Festival, Armory Hall, New York: In the 1960s, what would later lead to the founding of the organization Experiments in Art and Technology, was first put into practice on a large scale by ten New York artists as a unique festival for electronic as well as interactive performances and demonstrations. The idea of collaborating with technicians, not only initiated by Robert Rauschenberg and Billy Klüver but also organized and largely promoted by them, lead to the performances suggested by the festival title: Nine Evenings with performances by John Cage, Lucinda Childs, Merce Cunningham, Öyvind Fahlström, Alex Hay, Deborah Hay, Steve Paxton, Robert Rauschenberg, David Tudor, and Robert Whitman. Billy Klüver was again the driving force. The main technical element of the performances was the electronic modulation system TEEM, composed of portable, electronic units which functioned without cables by remote control. Cage used this system to activate and deactivate loud speakers that consistently reacted to movement by way of photo-cells. For not always being technically and artistically successful, these performances exhausted for the first time the full range of the live-aspect of electronics, taking advantage of its artistic potential in all of its diversity. Seen in that light, the «9 Evenings» rank among the milestones of media art, even though today only a few filmed documents bear witness to the event. This performance series, titled "9 Evenings: Theater & Engineering," was organized by Robert Rauschenberg and Billy Klüver, then a research scientist at Bell Labs in Murray Hill, N.J. The series led to the creation of the foundation Experiments in Art and Technology (E.A.T.), whose mission was to promote collaborations between artists, engineers, and scientists. E.A.T. has begun to produce a series of films documenting each artist's performance at the "9 Evenings," and this film on Robert Rauschenberg's "Open Score" is the first to be released, providing important documentation of Rauschenberg's work and these innovative collaborations. Julie Martin, producer of the "9 Evenings" DVD series, will discuss the films as well as the 1966 event that was the first large-scale collaboration between artists, engineers, and scientists. "Open Score" began with a tennis game at the 69th Regiment Armory in New York City on Oct. 14, 1966. Bill Kaminski of Bell Labs designed a miniature FM transmitter that fit in the handle of the tennis racket, and a contact microphone was attached to the handle with the antenna wound around the frame of the head. Each time Frank Stella (a prominent American painter) and his tennis partner Mimi Kanarek hit the ball, the vibrations of the racquet strings were transmitted to the speakers around the Armory, and a loud "bong" was heard. At each bong, one of the 48 lights illuminating the arena went out, and the game ended when the Armory was in complete darkness. Five hundred people descended onto the tennis court in the dark, and their images were recorded using infrared light and infrared television cameras and projected onto three large screens suspended in front of the audience. In the third part of the film, Simone Forti sang an Italian folk song as Rauschenberg picked her up and put her down at several places on the Armory floor. Fool's Gold - European Premiere London: 10 April 2008 An aquamarine carpet implying the sea tonight on yet another chilly evening in the Square for the European premiere of this Mat and Kate rom com. Matthew spend loads of time with fans and did all the media. Most anyone who wanted signing or an interview got what they'd come for. Kate couldn't manage the whole fanline so only the fortunate few got her autograph. She looked gorgeous in green but had a wardrobe malfunction as she was about to pose for the paps - her personal dresser did some field repairs - so no oops moments fortunately. Check the video for a record of his handiwork. There were fans and TV crews from all over Europe cheering them on. Director Andy Tennat was kind enough to chat, sign and pose with fans once he'd been identifed by my fan-mates. The lighter evenings make it nicer for camerawork and there's no need for arc lights so we've saved the planet a bit, but it does encourage everything to get started just that little bit later than usual. On the filming front, one of the production crews plonked themselves right in front of me after my eight hour wait so much reaching and shoulder tapping was needed to get a clear view. The Lord of Annandale, better known as Robert the Bruce, was my grandfather 27 generations ago. Because the original section of our home was constructed in the same style as a manor home in the UK, using real masonry techniques seldom seen today, we decided to name it in honor of our ancestors. The first thing to catch your eye upon entering the drive is the solid stone used in the construction of the 2200 square foot original building. These outside walls vary in thickness from 12 to 16 inches making it as impenetrable to weather or encroaching raiders as was the original Annandale. Richard Taylor and Associates were engaged to design an addition to the home in order to provide a downstairs master suite, an enlarged dining room, main floor laundry room, upstairs nanny suite and a 2-1/2 car garage without detracting from the interesting character of the original building. This addition was completed in 1998 as a complete restoration and renovation of the original building continued, which included all new casement windows, a new kitchen, enclosing of the screened porch into a four season room, new built ins, ceramics, floor coverings, etc. The restoration was completed in the spring of 2006. The original home not only boasts of real stone walls, but the interior walls are also constructed of masonry materials with the use of plaster over brick. This combined with the 8 steel bar joists, wire mesh, and poured concrete floors over a full basement make the home a real bomb shelter. Hardwood, ceramic, or carpet cover the concrete throughout the original home. The three room basement provides a second laundry/storage room, a furnace/storage room and a huge workshop. Winter evenings are a delight when you can curl up with a good book in the library next to the one of four fireplaces in the home. Three of the fireplaces are gas while the original fireplace in the main living room is wood burning for that good old fashioned crackling fire on Christmas mornings. Upstairs in the new section is a homey, complete nanny suite including a full kitchen, bath, huge bedroom with walk in closet, reading area, and large great room with vaulted ceiling. This area can be accessed from the main living area downstairs, or from the emergency egress winding staircase in the garage, making it very private for a nanny, in-laws, or business guests. The professionally landscaped, lighted and irrigated 3.2 acre exterior is home to a variety of wildlife such as deer, foxes and raccoons which can be viewed on summer evenings from either the 1000 square foot deck, or the 600 square foot enclosed arbor in the orchard. Or, if you prefer to view from a height of 15 feet, you can sit on the upstairs deck which connects the old and new sections of the home. The 50 x 60 workshop houses an additional finished 5 car garage with a storage loft overhead, plus nearly 2000 square feet of storage space for boats, trailers, RVs, etc. Normally, this kind of quality of life could only be had by living in the remote countryside. However, the best part of all is that we are located within 6 miles of the Polaris shopping area and 3 miles from Olentangy High School one of the top performing public school districts in the state. Unfortunately, our family has downsized to the point of just the two of us. With kids and grandkids spread all over the country, we have decided it is time to give up our ancestral home, and free ourselves to travel. We hope to find a family who will love this estate as much as we have, and indeed turn it into their manor home.
