BETTY DAVIS-"SHUT OFF THE LIGHT" (1975) BETTY DAVIS CD RE-ISSUES are out now! For more info, go here:http://brainwashed.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=5962&Itemid=90 http://www.lightintheattic.net/releases/bettydavis/ Check out this great site: http://www.myspace.com/bettymabrydavis Lights out with Queen of Funk! Betty goes at it full-throttle in this scorcher. She leaves it to interpretation but here's a few sketches of possibilities. If the 60's was the Empowerment decade -from King to X to Che to Chavez to the Counterculture- then the 70's was the Liberation decade. There were so many issues to address that what we know of as the 60's really stretches roughly from 1964 to 1975. The rise of Feminism and the lateral expression of sensuality were later, crucial extensions in that period. Sexism is evil; but Sensuality is essential. The word "sex" can mean either gender or the sensual act. Folks who blur the two without distinction speak to neither well. Gender inequities are wrongs that should be righted. Sexuality is a spiritual and physical pleasure everyone has a right to. The best lights of Feminism understood this from the beginning, and do now with examples like Riot Grrl and Bust and Bitch magazines. Betty Davis was a progessive sensualist who was misunderstood and suppressed in her time by repressives and some confused progressives. Time has borne out the quality of her work and the merit of her stance. "Liberation for all, Everything must be rethought." -funknroll Betty Davis discography: BETTY DAVIS, 1973 THEY SAY I'M DIFFERENT, 1974 NASTY GAL, 1975 CRASHIN' FROM PASSION, a.k.a., HANGING OUT IN HOLLYWOOD, 1979 Check out my Herstory Of Rock in the Playlist page of my Channel! BETTY DAVIS- "NASTY GAL" (1975) BETTY DAVIS CD RE-ISSUES are out now! For more info, go here:http://brainwashed.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=5962&Itemid=90 http://www.lightintheattic.net/releases/bettydavis/ Check out this great site: http://www.myspace.com/bettymabrydavis Betty Davis is the Grande Domme of Funk. She inspired husband Miles into reinventing Jazz and himself in '69. She combined the sounds of her friends Sly and Jimi to make intense FunkRock albums of her own. Her fierce sexual persona and aggro voice scared the record industry in the mid-70's. In doing so, she paved the way for such rebels as the Slits, Grace Jones, Nina Hagen, Madonna, Annie Lennox, Diamanda Galas, Boss Hogg, Joi (Gilliam), Nikka Costa, and Peaches. This is the title track from her 1975 masterpiece. Obviously Prince heard it, which inspired him to turn it into "Nasty Girl" by Vanity 6 in 1982. RUTH COPELAND/ FUNKADELIC-'YOUR LOVE BEEN SO GOOD TO ME' (1971) Ruth Copeland is an important missing chapter in the history of Parliament-Funkadelic. In the early 70's she co-wrote, sang, recorded, and performed with them. Such staples as "Come In Out of the Rain" and "The Breakdown" came from her pen. Also, many of the support vocals on the first Parliament album, "Osmium" (1970), are Ruth's. From the moment Sly & the Family Stone got their hands on James' groove, Funk was an inclusive party. George Clinton founded P-Funk on that core truth and has never lost sight of it. The British soul waif Ruth Copeland became part of the new funk mob by '70. She made two albums of her own, backed by the Funkadelic band (technically at this point, Parliament was considered the singers upfront.) The LPs were pounding out FunkRock years ahead of Betty Davis; but also, with her poetic neo-folk dramas, Ruth predates the innovations of Kate Bush. By 1972, there was a rift in which the classic Funkadelic band left Clinton and toured with Ruth for long stretches. She opened for Sly & the Family Stone for much of them. Then, after an RCA album in'76, she disappeared. Both of the early LPs are available on the "Gimme Shelter: The Invictus Sessions " CD (1998). This includes her two epic Stones covers, "Gimme Shelter" and "Play With Fire". The classic Funkadelic band are: Eddie Hazel, lead guitar Bernie Worrell, keyboards Billy "Bass" Nelson, bass Tawl Ross rhythm guitar Tiki Fulwood, drums http://www.answers.com/topic/ruth-cop... http://www.cduniverse.com/search/xx/m...
