Handel - Acis & Galatea - part 1 While my two votings are still going on, I decided that I should do something new. Each two months I'm going to put out a whole opera on Youtube. The opera of this month (actually, two months) is Handel's gentle Acis and Galatea. A quite short work, Acis and Galatea still has quite a bit of wonderful music: for example, Galatea's "Hush, ye pretty warbling" and "As when the dove laments her love", Polyphemus's "O ruddier than the cherry" and the duet for two lovers "Happy we". I do hope that you enjoy this beautiful pastoral opera (comments are required). There are many versions to choose from, but my favorite one is the Adrian Boult 1960 recording. Although it isn't terribly authentic (some repetitions are just skipped, there aren't any variations), Adrian Boult leads a very commpassionate recording, the soloists (Joan Sutherland, Peter Pears and Owen Brannigan) are top-notch; actually, everything is absolutely right. The first part includes: 1. Ouverture; 2. No. 1 - Chorus: "Oh the pleasure of the the plains". Tags: Handel Joan Sutherland Peter Pears Adrian Boult Coloratura Baroque |

4. Handel: Aci, Galatea e Polifemo (HWV 72) Stereo: http://br.youtube.com/watch?v=RuWlRpxYFrE&fmt=18 George Frideric Handel (1685 - 1759). Aci, Galatea e Polifemo (HWV 72): 1. Aria: Verso già l'alma col sangue. London Baroque. Emma Kirkby (Soprano). Dir: Charles Medlam. Aci, Galatea e Polifemo (HWV 72) is a dramatic cantata - also called a serenata - by George Frederic Handel. It was first performed at Naples on 19 July 1708; the completed score is dated to 16 June 1708. The serenata was commissioned most probably by Donna Aurora Sanseverino, Duchess of Laurenzano. It is likely that the work was composed for the wedding festivities of the Duke of Alvito, Tolomeo Saverio Gallo, and Beatrice Tocco di Montemiletto, Princess of Acaja and nephew of Aurora Sanseverino. The plot is virtually the same as in Handel's later English-language pastoral opera Acis and Galatea. The role of Polifemo, a cyclops whose actions have lethal consequences for Aci, is particularly notable for the vast range and singular vocal agility required. The part ranges from the D below the bass stave to the A above it - and that in one aria, "Fra l'ombre e gl'orrori". The libretto was written by Nicola Giuvo, private secretary and literature adviser of Duchess Sanseverino. Tags: Handel Aci Galatea Polifemo HWV 72 London Charles Medlam Baroque Emma Kirkby |

Acis y Galatea (5 to 7 of 25) The CD is not available on the market so I thought to upload it and give people a chance to listen it. If there are some copyright problems, I'll not hesitate to remove the videos. Theoretical, Acis should be interpreted by a countertenor but it is very nice with mezzo soprano. :) "De Literes' Acis is a characterful alternative to the French, Italian and English versions with a vivid portrayal of the grotesquely libidinous Polyphemus. The group's exuberance sometimes strays into rhythmic chaos but the delicious laments of lead sopranos Lola Casariego and Marta Almajano offset the castanet-heavy dances perfectly." - The Independent (London), Mar 25, 2001 by Anna Picard Acis y Galatea Release Date : 11/04/2003 Re-release? : No Label : DHM Deutsche Harmonia Mundi Number of Discs : 1 Runtime : 0h : 59m Mono/Stereo : Stereo SPAR Code : DDD Composer: Antonio Literes (circa 1670 - 1747) Date Written: 1708 Period: Baroque Country: Spain Language: Spanish From Genre: Zarzuela Track Time: 59m : 49s Studio/Live: Studio Venue: Deia Church, Mallorca, Spain Date Recorded: 05/1999 Conductor: Banzo, Eduardo Lopez Ensemble: Al Ayre Español Performer: Almajano, Marta Instrument: Soprano Artist Notes: Galatea Performer: Alvarez, Maria-Luz Instrument: Soprano Artist Notes: Nereida Performer: Bordas, Ricard Instrument: Countertenor Performer: Casariego, Lola Instrument: Mezzo Soprano Artist Notes: Acis Performer: Meijer, Xenia Instrument: Mezzo Soprano Artist Notes: Glauco Performer: Pardo, Marina Instrument: Mezzo Soprano Artist Notes: Tisbe Performer: Ricart, Jordi Instrument: Baritone Artist Notes: Polyphemus Performer: Roca, Marisa Instrument: Mezzo Soprano Artist Notes: Doris 01. Claymore Character Song: Galatea This is Galatea's song from the album 'Claymore Intimate Persona' Song name: Hangyaku (Japanese name)/Rebellion (English name) Singer: Voice actress - Ai Orisaka I think this song matches Galatea well. Bleh, I should've put in a clip/pic of Galatea mentioning beauty in some form, because it's part of her character, but oh well. Lyric translation by Ismu34 (thanks!): Hankyaku (Rebellion) Beneath the excited rubble the epilogue quietly being told only lasted till the opening curtain of the battle that is beginning Controlling a distant, faint consciousness a prayer resembling meditation peels off the mask within deceit and the voice of my heart is heard, so clearly that it is cruel My spikes peeled off by everything deceived and led astray By the act of rebelling I thought I protected myself I turned my eyes away from the present, reflected in them not turning my face to the truth I must be a fool... Rotted by the poisonous moth the sinner is burnt by the blaze both hands folded, burning red, giving the last confession The thorny whip, blooming with black roses piercing, as if frozen to The earth, withering away cries out in an abyss called despair, the bell of hope is rung If reborn yield your body to the flow don't rebel against anything live as it is With these eyes watching over one place where I can return to, to someday get back my smile I walk on though the "now" Even if these eyes one day lose the light, I don't think that I will regret this moment that I turned my face to the truth Tags: claymore character song galatea intimate persona hangyaku |
