Grizzlies - Warriors 109-104 I Mayo 20pts vs Jackson 27pts OAKLAND, Calif., November 7, 2008(AP) -- O.J. Mayo is making a quick adjustment to the NBA. "At the end of the day it's just basketball,'' Mayo said after scoring 20 points and grabbing a career-high nine rebounds in the Grizzlies' 109-104 victory over the Golden State Warriors on Friday night. "There are a lot of good players at this level but the rims are the same height, the court is the same length and it's still 5-on-5. It's a big deal but I'm pretty comfortable.'' Two days after scoring 28 points in a loss to the previously winless Sacramento Kings, Mayo shot only 8-of-19 against the Warriors but helped spark a pivotal third quarter when Memphis wiped out Golden State's halftime lead and took control of the game. Mayo had 11 points, two assists and two rebounds in the third, while Rudy Gay added six of his team-high 23. Gay later iced the game in the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer that made it 104-98. "When we did that, everybody was scoring, everybody was getting dunks and we were playing freely,'' Gay said of the Grizzlies' 33-point third quarter. "When we play more hesitant (we struggle). We played free and we got that lead and it was easy to score.'' Hakim Warrick had 19 points and 10 rebounds, and Darrell Arthur had his second double-double of the season with 13 points and 12 rebounds for the Grizzles, who beat Golden State for the second time in five days. Stephen Jackson had 27 points to lead Golden State, while Andris Biedrins had 23 points and 12 rebounds. It's the 13th consecutive double-double by Biedrins, the longest active streak in the NBA and the longest by a Warriors player since Nate Thurmond had 13 straight in 1973. "We didn't play hard enough,'' said Jackson, who was guarding Gay when the Grizzlies' forward made his pivotal 3-pointer. "Down the stretch I am the leader of the team, s I've got to be smarter and can't give up a wide open three to their best player at the end of the game.'' Warrick scored seven points in the fourth quarter, including a thundering dunk from the baseline that gave the Grizzlies a 101-96 lead with 2:10 remaining. The Grizzlies, who entered the game as the NBA's third-lowest scoring team, broke out for the highest offensive output of the season and also outrebounded the Warriors 55-41. On Monday, the Grizzlies held the Warriors to a season-low 34.4 shooting percentage in a 90-79 victory in Memphis. Memphis led 93-81 early in the fourth quarter but had to hold off a late charge by the Warriors, who closed within 97-96 on a free throw from Biedrins with 3:36 left. Marc Gasol answered with two free throws and Warrick followed with a dunk and the Grizzlies never looked back while winning on the road for the first time this season. "We felt if we keep plugging away we were going to get it and it was good that we finally got the monkey off our back,'' Memphis coach Marc Iavaroni said. "We knew if we got some stops like we did in Memphis that we would be able to run on them and get some easy baskets.'' Already without injured starting point guard Monta Ellis, the Warriors were missing forwards Corey Maggette and Al Harrington. Maggette was sidelined with a strained left hamstring while Harrington complained of soreness in his back and underwent an MRI earlier in the day. The test was inconclusive and Harrington is seeking a second opinion. Harrington, who has asked to be traded due to his ongoing feud with Nelson, probably wouldn't have started even if he was healthy. "For the good of the franchise we have to anticipate that he won't be here and do what we have to do to not be all of a sudden totally surprised about a different lineup,'' Nelson said before the game. "It's not that he's not going to play, he will play. But we've got to look to the future here. A guy shouldn't be in a place where he doesn't want to be. It's hard for him to give his best and his all. So it's a good thing for both parties at this point.'' Brandan Wright started in place of Harrington and had six points and two rebounds. Memphis shot 54.5 percent in the first quarter but made only six of 26 attempts from the floor. Golden State's offense wasn't much better. The Warriors led 42-37 with eight minutes left in the second quarter but made just four shots the rest of the half and went into the break ahead 50-48. Memphis center Darko Milicic was ejected from the game with 1:43 left in the first half after arguing a call with an official. Milicic had six points and six rebounds when he was thrown out. Mayo helped settle the Grizzlies with a strong third quarter. He had 11 points and two assists to help spark runs of 17-6 and 10-0 to help Memphis take control. Mayo's 16-foot turnaround jumper with 4.4 seconds left put the Grizzlies ahead 81-74. "That's the kind of balance that we need to have and show, night in and night out,'' Mayo said. "The second half, we got stops and it really opened up the game for us.'' Made by NBA TV. Allen Iverson 32pts 12asts clutch FT vs Grizzlies NBA 07/08 Trailing by seven points with 3:12 left, the Denver Nuggets didn't panic. They made veteran plays. The Memphis Grizzlies were hurt by their youth. Allen Iverson had 32 points and 12 assists Wednesday night, and the Nuggets used a late run to beat the Grizzlies 106-102. "This was a big win for us at somebody else's home," Iverson said. "Down seven points with 3 minutes to go. It was a gut check for us. I think a game like this is going to help us down the road." Elias Says Allen Iverson posted his own kind of triple double on Wednesday, leading the Nuggets to a win over Memphis by shooting 11-of-26 from the floor, 10-of-12 from the line and adding 12 assists. It was only the fourth regulation (non-overtime) game in the NBA this season in which a player had double-digit field goals, free throws and assists. Iverson also did it on Dec. 6, as did Joe Johnson (Nov. 14) and Dwyane Wade (Dec. 7). • Read more Elias Says Memphis had built its lead with a 6-0 run after Rudy Gay's 11-footer with 3:12 left, before Denver answered with a 12-0 spurt to seize control. Iverson made all six of his free throws in the final 23.2 seconds, helping the Nuggets snap a six-game road losing streak that included losses at Dallas and New Orleans at the start of the three-game road trip. "It was definitely important," Denver center Marcus Camby said. "We got our butts kicked the other night down in New Orleans against a great team. We wanted to salvage the rest of this three-game road trip. "We had to stop the losing streak." Anthony Carter finished with 18 points, five during the decisive rally, while Linas Kleiza added 15 for the Nuggets. Camby had 13 points and 19 rebounds. Gay led Memphis with 30 points and 10 rebounds, and Mike Miller contributed 22 points. Kyle Lowry scored 19 and Darko Milicic finished with 14 points and matched his career high with 16 rebounds for the Grizzlies, who have lost four of five. "It's the same story as before," Milicic said. "[We] just can't find ways to win." Both teams were short-handed. The Nuggets were without Carmelo Anthony, the league's fourth-leading scorer, who missed his fifth game with a left ankle sprain. That, and previous injuries to guard Chucky Atkins and forward Nene, left Denver with 10 players dressed. Memphis had one less because of injuries to guard Mike Conley and Pau Gasol, the team's second-leading scorer and leading rebounder. Also, forward Stromile Swift was suspended for the game after an exchange with Memphis coach Marc Iavaroni in Monday's loss to Dallas. Denver's rally came from missed shots and a pair of turnovers from the Grizzlies. Camby blocked his fifth shot of the night during the stretch, and the Nuggets used their defense to turn the game. "Unfortunately, we were our own worst enemies with the turnovers once again and not getting back well against a very, very good fast-break team," Iavaroni said. While Memphis held a 51-39 advantage on the boards, Denver dominated the paint 60-40. Iverson did everything possible to carry the Nuggets in the first half, scoring 21 points and handing out seven assists as Denver took a 54-52 lead into the locker room. Denver committed seven turnovers in the opening quarter, and neither team seemed to be in a rhythm offensively. Memphis missed nine of 10 3-point attempts in the half and both teams had nine turnovers at the break. There was poor ballhandling, wayward passes and mouthing about calls and no-calls. At one point in the second quarter, Iverson opted out of a breakaway layup for a pass to J.R. Smith, who blew a reverse dunk. The next time down the floor, Smith misfired on a second slam, which Miller converted into a 20-foot jumper. The Nuggets picked up their shooting touch in the second quarter and erased an early 11-point Memphis lead. They finished the night shooting 51 percent. The teams stayed close in the second half, including a handful of ties in the third quarter. Miller scored eight points in the first 3 minutes of the period. Meanwhile, Iverson missed all seven of his shots, and Memphis carried a 78-73 lead into the final quarter. "I got real good shots in the second half. The same shots I got in the first half," Iverson said. "I just went ice cold." Camby said the difference in the final rally was converting on offense. "We just knew if we kept being aggressive, shots were going to fall," Camby said. "Guys were missing a lot of easy shots throughout the ballgame that they normally make. "We just knew we needed to get a consecutive streak of defensive stops in order for us to take the lead." Meet the Grizzlies! Hearst Grizzly Gulch opens June 14th, 2007. Ever since San Francisco Zoo keeper Deb Cano was a little girl, she was fascinated by animals. So much, that as a young girl, and even still today, her dad would call her "animal." Growing up just a few minutes away from the Zoo in Daly City, Cano developed a deep passion in caring for wildlife, as she surrounded herself with dogs, cats and horses. Her enthusiasm for animals would eventually lead her to a profession that she proudly describes as "my home away from home." Today, the veteran keeper is responsible for the care and health of the Zoo's polar bears, spectacled bears, Siberian and Sumatran tigers, snow leopards, fishing cats, ocelots, a river otter and our beloved grizzly bear sisters. Toronto Raptors vs Memphis Grizzlies Nov.21/07 Chris Bosh had 22 points and 19 rebounds, and the Toronto Raptors overcame a poor shooting performance to beat the Memphis Grizzlies 95-89 Wednesday night. Jason Kapono added 14 points, while Andrea Bargnani and Carlos Delfino scored 13 apiece. Bargnani also had 11 rebounds. The Raptors snapped a two-game losing streak despite shooting 39 percent. Bargnani finished 5-of-16 from the field, while Jose Calderon, who had 10 points and eight assists, was 4-of-13. Mike Miller and Pau Gasol each had 16 points and 10 rebounds for Memphis, while Rudy Gay scored 15 points. The teams were tied entering the fourth. After the Raptors built an early five-point lead in the period, Memphis erased the advantage with nine unanswered points. Memphis held an 82-80 lead with 2:33 left after Kyle Lowry hit a free throw. But the Raptors reeled off a 9-0 run for an 89-82 lead, and held on to break a four-game losing streak in Memphis. For the most part, it was a night of airballs from short distances, layups clanking off iron and close-range putbacks coming up short. But Toronto, the second-best 3-point shooting team in the league at 42.9 percent, connected on 11 of 21 attempts. Bargnani was 3-of-4 and Delfino 3-of-5. Both teams struggled from the floor in the first half before the Raptors carried a 46-44 lead into the break. Bosh scored 12 points for Toronto. Miller registered the same amount for Memphis. Despite shooting 25 percent in the first quarter, Toronto was still close. Bargnani missed his first six shots and Bosh connected on only two of his initial eight attempts. Both teams stayed below 38 percent shooting in the half. While the Raptors shot poorly, they were protecting the ball, committing their only two turnovers in the first half. The second half was slightly better from a shooting standpoint. Bargnani had eight points in the third quarter, but neither team could pull away, and they entered the fourth tied at 68. Notes: Despite the win, Toronto is one of only three teams over which Memphis holds a series advantage. The other two are the Clippers and Charlotte Bobcats. ... Raptors G T.J. Ford sat out the game with an "arm stinger'' sustained in the third quarter of Tuesday's game against Dallas. Ford took a knee to the chest as he tried to draw a charge. ... Memphis C Darko Milicic missed his third game because of a sprained left thumb. Meanwhile, rookie G Mike Conley missed his second game with a right shoulder injury. Memphis coach Marc Iavaroni said after medical experts evaluated the tear in the posterior labral, it was determined surgery, which could have ended Conley's season, was not necessary. ... Bosh already had his sixth double-double of the season by the 4-minute mark of the second quarter. ... Stromile Swift was called for a flagrant foul in the first quarter when he tried to block Jamario Moon's breakaway layup, and Moon landed hard under the Raptors' basket. Warriors-Grizzlies 79-90 I Jackson 17pts vs Gasol 27pts MEMPHIS, Tenn., November 3, 2008 (AP) -- The Golden State Warriors should have paid more attention to Memphis rookie Marc Gasol. While the Warriors were worrying about high-profile Grizzlies Rudy Gay and O.J. Mayo, Gasol had 27 points and 16 rebounds to help the Grizzlies beat the Warriors 90-79 on Monday night. The Grizzlies remained undefeated at home, the first time in franchise history they have started 2-0 at home. "He did really great. I was impressed," Warriors center Andris Biedrins said. "...He really made us pay for not keeping attention to him. We were more worried about Mayo and Rudy Gay and didn't think about [Gasol] so much." Gasol went 9-for-11 from the field and the free-throw line for Memphis, which ended a seven-game skid in the series against Golden State. The rookie also blocked three shots. Before the game, Memphis coach Marc Iavaroni said Gasol, who has only played four games in the NBA, was still a bit confused on when he should take on some of the offensive load. Gasol said afterward that his game is built around his defense. "I always think that the defense should give you a lot of confidence on offense," Gasol said. "It's hard for me to just come out and just play offense, shoot and don't play defense. I don't get confidence like that." Biedrins had 16 points and 22 rebounds for Golden State. Stephen Jackson finished with 17 points and Corey Maggette scored 13 despite sitting out the second quarter with an injury. Biedrins has 11 straight double-doubles dating to last season for the longest current streak in the league. It was also his second game with 20-plus rebounds in his career. Memphis closed the third quarter with a 13-2 run and carried a 73-67 lead into the fourth. Mayo's fast-break dunk capped a 7-0 surge and extended the lead to 86-75 in the final period. The Warriors managed only 12 points in the fourth, and Memphis is holding opponents to an average of 85.3 points a game. "We didn't do much to help ourselves," Golden State coach Don Nelson said. "They were solid defensively. ...They play hard, they play 48 minutes. We really weren't up to the task." Gay scored 14 points and Mayo added 13 for Memphis. Kelenna Azubuike scored 10 for the Warriors, who shot 34 percent from the field. "I think this was one of those games where we were getting a lot of open shots," Warriors rookie guard DeMarcus Nelson said. "They were the same shots we've been getting, but tonight we just didn't convert and complete a high percentage of them." Memphis, which led by as many as nine in the first half, carried a 49-45 advantage into the break. Gasol had 20 points and nine boards at halftime. Despite Gasol's big first half, the Warriors stayed close and erased the Memphis lead with nine unanswered points midway through the third. Nelson had the final two baskets in the run. Memphis got out of its offense, playing one-on-one and taking ill-advised shots late in the shot clock. But in the fourth, Memphis turned up the defense, the Warriors began missing shots and the Grizzlies pulled away. "I really think all five guys are working together, talking, moving together as one team and just taking a lot of pride in our defense," Mayo said. "We've put together two home wins, and that's pretty good for us." Game notes Maggette, the Warriors' second-leading scorer, went to the locker room late in the first quarter with a mild left hamstring strain. He returned at the start of the second half. ... Warriors forward Rob Kurz, signed by the team Sunday, dressed for his first game. The 6-foot-9 rookie out of Notre Dame appeared in four preseason games for Golden State, averaging 4.5 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.8 assists. The team waived him Oct. 27. To make room for Kurz, the Warriors moved guard Monta Ellis to the suspended list. ... The Warriors are the youngest team in the league with an average age of 24 years and 71 days on opening day and one of the few teams in the league with more rookies (five) than the Grizzlies (four). However, the Grizzlies have started three of their rookies (Gasol, Mayo and Darrell Arthur) most of the season, while only Nelson is getting significant playing time for the Warriors' first-year players. Magic - Grizzlies 84-86 I Lewis 23pts vs Gay 29pts MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- The youthful Memphis Grizzlies relied on one of their veterans for a thrilling win on Friday night. Rudy Gay, the third-year pro, hit an 18-foot jumper right of the basket as time expired to give the Memphis Grizzlies an 86-84 win over the Orlando Magic. "I didn't have a chance to think it was off [line]," Gay said of the final shot. "I was thinking the whole time: 'I practice this a lot, so go out there and do what I practice." The shot over Keith Bogans came after Gay came around a screen by Marc Gasol. It gave Gay 29 points to lead the Grizzlies to their first win in a home opener since moving to Memphis in the 2001-02 season. Gay scored 14 of Memphis' 25 points in the fourth-quarter rally. Rookie O.J. Mayo scored 17 points and grabbed six rebounds for Memphis, while Gasol scored 10 points and guarded the Magic's Dwight Howard. "Obviously, it was the Rudy show," Memphis coach Marc Iavaroni said. "He made some good plays. He made some incredible shots, and the last one was the winner." Rashard Lewis led the Magic with 23 points, while Hedo Turkoglu finished with 18, nine rebounds and seven assists. Howard had 14 points and 14 rebounds, but managed only nine shots. Jameer Nelson had 11 points. Gasol gave Memphis a chance to win in the final minute after blocking a shot and then tipping out Quinton Ross' miss with 26 seconds left and the score tied at 84. Gay's 21-footer bounced over the backboard giving Orlando one last chance with 2.8 seconds left in regulation. But with Gasol overplaying Howard in the low post, Kyle Lowry intercepted the inbounds for Memphis, setting the stage for Gay's shot. On the ensuing inbounds pass from Lowry, Bogans said he knew either Gay or Mayo would get the last shot. "I felt like I was right with him the whole time," Bogans said the winning shot. "I wanted to make sure I didn't foul him. I just tried to keep a hand in his face. He elevated so high, and he made a tough shot." Memphis trailed by 15 in the second half, but used a 13-0 run in the early stages of the fourth quarter to erase an 11-point Magic lead. Orlando went more than 6 minutes without scoring during the Memphis rally, that culminated with Lowry's drive for a 76-74 lead with 5:32 left. From there, the teams exchanged leads, and two free throws by Hakim Warrick with 1:08 left tied the score at 84. "Turnovers and forced shots killed us," Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said. "When the game was on the line, we didn't even jump for rebounds. ... We had no energy, no ball movement." Memphis, which has nine players 23 years old and younger, showed its youth movement by starting rookies Mayo, Gasol and Darrell Arthur, who finished with 10 rebounds. At times, the matchup in the low post became entertaining as the rookie Gasol battled against Howard. The Magic center managed only four shots in the half, and at times appeared frustrated. "That was their game plan to fight me and get physical," Howard said. In the third quarter, Gasol got in foul trouble, and none of the other Grizzlies big men had the same impact, allowing Howard to be more dominant. Memphis allowed Orlando to build the advantage to 15 before carrying a 68-61 lead into the fourth. But Orlando struggled in the second half, shooting only 25 percent, including 4-of-14 from the field in the fourth quarter. That left the Magic, in their 20th season, with an 0-2 start for only the third time in franchise history, the last time coming in 2005-06 when they lost three before a win. "We'll get over it," Howard said. "There's some adversity that teams go through at the beginning of the season, some times at the end. I'm glad we're going through it now rather than at the end when we really need to buckle down. "We've got to take a couple of these tough blows and get ourselves refocused." Game notes Memphis exercised the fourth-year option on F Rudy Gay and G Kyle Lowry, while picking up the third-year option on guards Mike Conley and Javaris Crittenton. ... The last time the Grizzlies started three rookies was their initial season in Memphis when Shane Battier, Pau Gasol and Will Solomon started three games. ... Howard got a technical midway through the second period. ... Gay got a technical later in the period when he slammed the ball to the floor after he thought he was fouled going to the basket.
