Meet the Grizzlies! Hearst Grizzly Gulch opens June 14th, 2007. Ever since San Francisco Zoo keeper Deb Cano was a little girl, she was fascinated by animals. So much, that as a young girl, and even still today, her dad would call her "animal." Growing up just a few minutes away from the Zoo in Daly City, Cano developed a deep passion in caring for wildlife, as she surrounded herself with dogs, cats and horses. Her enthusiasm for animals would eventually lead her to a profession that she proudly describes as "my home away from home." Today, the veteran keeper is responsible for the care and health of the Zoo's polar bears, spectacled bears, Siberian and Sumatran tigers, snow leopards, fishing cats, ocelots, a river otter and our beloved grizzly bear sisters. Grizzly Gulch Construction This episode of Behind the Scenes covers the construction of our newest exhibit, "Grizzly Gulch." Gogo Heinrich gives us a glimpse of the 3-acre, naturalistic habitat being built for our Grizzly Bears, Kachina and Kiona. The exhibit will encourage natural behaviors, as well as provide an up-close perspective of the bears through an underwater viewing window. Grizzly Gulch is one of the largest zoo exhibits dedicated to grizzly bears, featuring a lush, forest environment the bears to explore, dig and romp. In the center of it all is a massive waterfall, perfect for the grizzly girls to relax under and fish for an afternoon snack. Avalanche Terrain in Grizzly Gulch, Colorado Avalanche debris evident beneath the most recent accumulation of snow. Hiking up the trail to Handies Peak,14,048 ft / 4,282 m The hike up to Handies Peak from the Grizzly Gulch Trailhead is a bit longer but certainly the most beautiful and peaceful. If offers about 3,600 feet (1,113 metres) of elevation gain and a lot more seclusion than the standard route.
