Larry Winiwini Gurruwiwi - crankin' up yirdaki! Due to the overwhelming response to the Baywara clip and requests for more tutorial-type material, here's another one of Larry Winiwini that will be useful for students and budding traditionalists. Larry really is a fine player and seems to be only getting stronger and stronger each year. Those who were at the Rripangu Yirdaki Festival in Eisenbach, Germany, in 2002 would no doubt have been impressed with Larry's power and precision at that time. Since then, he has further refined a marvellous syncopation style that is all his own... I've not heard another Yolngu yirdaki player play quite like Larry. Material here shows front- and side-on shots including close-ups. Enjoy and do let me know if you have questions! Marimunuk Gurruwiwi giving yidaki tuition in Arnhem Land This is part of what you will experience on eco-cultural tours to Arnhem Land. I helped organise a study tour for Francois from France, and Ryohei and Tenshi from Japan, who wished to meet Djalu and to learn something of Yolngu culture... and proper traditional yidaki playing of course! Marimunuk here gives tuition to Francois, Ryohei and Tenshi. Marimunuk's enthusiasm is infectious. This guy has so much energy, so much life force, it seems he might explode because of it! It was the first time in Arnhem Land for Francois, Ryohei and Tenshi and the traditional rhythms a challenge. Ryohei had been practising a lot prior to this trip, and picked up very quickly when listening to Marimunuk, Djalu, Winiwini, Laga and other Yolngu yidaki players who gave us their time. Francois and Tenshi made good progress and changed from being purely contemporary players to resembling traditional style by the end of the trip. Good job guys! The next big project I am helping to organise is Djalu's Rripangu Yirdaki Masterclass 2008. See the iDIDJ Forum for details: http://www.forum.ididj.com.au/viewtopic.php?t=298 Places are limited so inquire early to avoid missing out. Baywara Power! A special didgeridoo made by Djalu Gurruwiwi Legend has it that when Djalu cut this yirdaki, he was struck by lightning in the knee and required hospitalisation. When the instrument was completed, the old women would cry whenever they heard this instrument being played, as it reminded them of a yirdaki that was used a long time ago at Galiwin'ku (Elcho Island) - presumably at the funeral of an important person. This is not an ordinary didgeridoo. It is a manifestation of Ancestral power, a representation of sacred Galpu mysteries. It is Baywara! This clip shows Djalu's son, Larry Winiwini - or Wuduku as he is more commonly known by family - playing Baywara at Ski Beach. Djalu is holding a Masterclass in Arnhem Land, for those who are interested, please visit Djalu's website: http://www.djalu.com/awareness.html To learn more about the didgeridoo and traditional Aboriginal culture, visit: http://www.ididj.com.au/ To purchase an authentic quality didgeridoo made by a traditional Aboriginal craftsman and to help support remote Aboriginal communities in Arnhem Land, visit: http://www.ididj.com.au/store/fine_didjeridus.html Credits: filmed by Andy Davern Tags: special didgeridoo baywara djalu gurruwiwi larry winiwini yirdaki yidaki didjeridu yolngu aboriginal music galpu wititj |

Exquisite Fabian Litalita Gurruwiwi F# yirdaki Fabian Litalita is a younger brother of Djalu Gurruwiwi whose respective fathers were brothers. Litalita is part of the new ALERT (Alcan Learning Education and Regional Training) program at Rio Tinto Alcan in the Gove Peninsula. I'm really proud of him for taking this opportunity seriously, and have seen the dramatic change in his life. I acquired this yidaki from Litalita not only because it is a fabulous instrument, but also to help him out as he approached me asking for assistance with some things. He is living in paid accommodation in Gove to stay away from distractions and bad influences, and to stay focussed on the ALERT program of which he is a part. The yidaki was cut a little shorter after I purchased it from Litalita, and Dhangal Gurruwiwi then painted it with designs of the djukurr' (fat) and the ribs of Wititj the Olive Python. This yidaki has excellent back pressure, aided by a lovely termite-eaten bore that is conical in shape and natural throughout. It is said by Nelson Dhapan to be a perfect instrument for the djatpangarri style of play. Here, Dhapan gives this yidaki a blast, starting with his own style and then playing djatpangarri style for which his father Harry Landhuni was famous. This is the same instrument played by 6 year old Isaiah Barra'kawuy in another YouTube clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UwT8YmRYqfc Fabian Litalita is not a prolific maker of yidaki, and only makes the occasional one for personal use. There is no other yidaki on the market made by Fabian Litalita as far as we know, and this is the first we have had from him. A rare and choice instrument. Incredible yirdaki made by Jason Guwanbal Gurruwiwi What a stunner! I haven't heard a yirdaki quite like this, with that deep thunderous quality in the key of C#. The voice is superb for such a low key. To have acoustic traction, acoustic elasticity, loudness, high back pressure, an easy and natural interval between fundamental and overtone notes... all this packaged into a shapely 170 cm of timber is just unbelievable. Jason Guwanbal is a son of Djalu's brother, and so calls Djalu 'father'. He is a manikaymirr, a respected songman who is in demand at ceremonies in the Gove region and at Elcho Island. He is a member of Rripangu Yirdaki and has performed publicly in Albury-Wodonga on the Victorian-NSW border, as well as in Melbourne... at popular venues such as Monsalvat and the Northcote Social Club. His favourite food is sushi! In the clip, Jason's brother Larry Winiwini goes ballistic. He makes it sound easy as though he were playing an F#, with machine-gun staccato rhythms in the prelude... crazy stuff. After Winiwini, Djalu himself gives this yirdaki a workout - so you can compare the two styles. And to think Djalu was having an off day, complaining of the flu. The Master rules! The last segment shows Jason Guwanbal - in a red shirt sitting down - participating at the funeral of a Rirratjingu relative, leading the singing for the Galpu in Alfred Gurritjiri's absence. Djapilawuy Gurruwiwi F/F# | SPECIAL PROMOTION This is a lovely yirdaki made by Djalu's daughter, Djapilawuy Gurruwiwi. I love this instrument because it can be played extremely fast - just watch Djapilawuy's brother Larry Winiwini in this clip to know what I mean. I also love the way this yirdaki has been crafted. It is rustic looking with angular marks from the chop-chop action of a knife, and left as is without sanding to remove surface irregularities. To feel the weight distribution of this yirdaki in both hands is to know that Djapilawuy has paid careful attention to ensuring uniform wall thickness throughout. The instrument feels nicely balanced and the acoustics reflect this: rapid, powerful, jazzy sonics. This is a brilliant yirdaki for fast contemporary Yolngu styles of play... and plenty of fun too! Yidaki by Djalu Gurruwiwi - Note D / E Djalu Gurruwiwi made this yidaki in 2005. For many months he has been seasoned to air, before Yalmakany Marawili painted him. This is a superb instrument with a quality of voice that he is described better as "Thunderous". This characteristic is the favorite from Djalu and it is said that she represent the voice of Wititj, the Ancestral Snake that is a main point totem of the clan of Galpu. Decoration of the miny'tji (sacred painting) of the clan Dhudi-Djapu(Yalmakany's mother's)............ these paintings come from her earth and it is as if they were an imprint of the genetic code of the earth. Djapilawuy Gurruwiwi E/E flat yirdaki | powerful stick It soars... It roars...! No, it is not a bird and it is not a plane, but it might well be a super duper yirdaki! This instrument was made by Djalu's daughter Lena Djapilawuy and it is so close to the sort of yirdaki that her father makes that you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference. It has murky depth and a growling bassline with that thunderous quality that Djalu is famed for. The power, the back pressure, the acoustic elasticity... it is all there in this outstanding yirdaki that Djalu would have been proud to call his own. The overtone note is particularly nice because of the purity of its tone and its fog-horn quality. This is one of Djapilawuy's better instruments and shows her upward trajectory as a yirdaki craftsperson in her own right. And check out the artwork too! Manany Gurruwiwi yirdaki, played by Larry Winiwini This is a very fine yirdaki made and painted by Manany Gurruwiwi. We first discovered the work of Manany at Galiwin'ku, Elcho Island, where she had made instruments for ceremonial use - somewhat unusual for a woman. In the intervening years, Manany has continued to make very fine instruments, adorning them with ochre-rendered artwork in the likeness of her father, Galpu artist Mithinarri Gurruwiwi (deceased). Mithinarri, and Marrakulu clan leader Mithili Warnambi (deceased), is said by some members of the Galpu clan to be the first to produce didgeridoos for the market covered entirely in Yolngu miny'tji (sacred painted ancestral designs). Manany's yirdaki is played here by her son-in-law (gurrung), the one and only Larry Winiwini. Djalu Gurruwiwi E/F yirdaki - classic Djalu stick This yirdaki was made by Djalu' and helped by his wife Dopiya Yunupingu. This is what Djalu's yirdaki are all about... powerful, loud, great back pressure, ultra responsive, outstanding depth and balance, rich full-bodied acoustics... This yirdaki epitomises Djalu's ideal with its thunderous quality that is said to represent the voice of Wititj the Ancestral Olive Python. Djalu won't be around for ever, so if ever there was a time to acquire a quality yirdaki made by the man who gave the world the didgeridoo, this is it. That is he still capable of crafting instruments of this quality is incredible, when most of his countrymen his age have long gone. Larry Winiwini, Djalu's son, ably demonstrates the versatility of his father's stick... though you can see in his eyes that he doesn't want to stick around for much longer, with 3 kids and a wife waiting on him... Djapilawuy Gurruwiwi F/F yirdaki | painted beauty Djapilawuy has learnt much from her father Djalu Gurruwiwi. Of all of Djalu's children, it could be said that Djapilawuy is the one most favoured by her parents, the "apple of their eyes". She participates in ceremony, is a non-drinker and non-smoker, helps Djalu and Dopiya with work, and stays close to them at all times. She is the sort of daughter all Yolngu parents would wish for! Djapilawuy is also known for her strong work ethic. She has previously been employed by YBE (Yirrkala Business Enterprises), and on most trips to the bush to cut yirdaki, this young lady can be seen accompanying Djalu, Dopiya and whoever might be feeling up to it on that day. Watching her father the Grand Master of yirdaki craft instruments over the years, Lena Djapilawuy has begun to make her own instruments and is becoming very good at it too. This yirdaki on offer here is a classic. It has wonderfully smooth acoustic characteristics, a silky fundamental note in the key of F that displays plenty of depth and bass elements. The overtone note is similarly smooth, with good clarity and purity. This really is a wonderful powerful yirdaki, a testament to Djapilawuy's developing talents and her closeness to her father. With brother Larry Winiwini, she is one of the exciting prospects for carrying on her father's name when Djalu's time expires. Djapilawuy is also coming into her own as an artist. She sometimes helps her father and mother with painting their yirdaki, and also paints her own instruments. Larry Winiwini plays Djapilawuy's yirdaki here. Again, many many thanks to Larry for his time and patience on this day. This yirdaki was recorded at the end of the day and Larry must have been wondering when we were going to stop work... sorry!
