Halabja (KURDISTAN) Der Giftgasangriff war ein Angriff auf die kurdische Stadt Halabja. Der Angriff fand am 16. März 1988 statt. Kurds of Halabja - Iraq Dec 2004 Halabja has become synonymous with the brutality of Saddam's regime. But the suffering of its residents has not ended with the dictator's fall. "Every time I breathe, I get pains in my chest. My eyes burn like fires," describes Aras Abid Akram. He will never forget what happened on 16 March 1988. As punishment for failing to resist Iran, Saddam ordered a three wave attack on Halabja. First the army fired mortars on the city. Then planes dropped napalm before the final attack of nerve and mustard gas. "Our skin began to itch horribly and became red," he recalls. Over 5,000 people were killed, including 42 members of Aras's family. Many of those who survived were scarred for life. Half the population suffers from breathing problems and the cancer rate is twice as high as the rest of the country. Children are born with cleft palates and other deformities. Halabja 16-17 march Kurdistan northirak Es gibt Nationen und Völker, deren Namen mit bestimmten historischen Ereignissen in Verbindung gebracht werde. So wie die Juden mit dem Holocaust im Nazi-Deutschland und die Armenier mit dem Völkermord 1915 in der Türkei in Verbindung gebracht werden, werden die Kurden mit dem Giftgasangriff auf Halabja am 16. März 1988 in Verbindung gebracht. Das Volk der Kurden ist in seiner Geschichte immer wieder zum Opfer der außenpolitischen Interessen der Großmächte geworden. Während beispielsweise die Araber zahlreiche Staaten gründen konnten, wurde Kurdistan unter dem Iran, Irak, der Türkei, Syrien und der Sowjetunion aufgeteilt. Die Kurden in allen Teilen Kurdistans haben sich immer wieder gegen die Besatzer gewehrt. Dersim, Agri, Scheich Sait, Barzani -- das sind einige der Synonyme für Kurdenaufstände, die brutal, vor den Augen der Weltöffentlichkeit zerschlagen wurden. Hunderttausende Kurden wurden massakriert und deportiert. In Südkurdistan (irakischer Teil Kurdistans) haben die Kurden unter der Führung des legendären Kurdenführers Mustafa Barzanî einen erfolgreichen und tapferen Kampf gegen Baath Partei und dessen Führer Saddam Hussein geführt. Am 16. März 1988 ließ Saddam Hussein das kurdische Gebiet aus der Luft mit Giftgas angreifen. Dabei starben allein in Halabca unmittelbar nach dem Angriff 5000 Kurden, die meisten von ihnen Frauen und Kinder. Um den kurdischen Widerstand zu brechen, ließ Saddam Hussein in den berüchtigten „ „Anfal-Operationen" 182.000 Kurden deportieren, angeblich nach Süden, in die Wüste. Keiner dieser deportierten Kurden kam jemals wieder zurück. Jetzt, nach der Befreiung des Irak und Kurdistans, findet man nach und nach die Leichen der damals deportierten in Massengräbern in der Wüste. Saddam und seine Mörder haben die meisten gefoltert und bei lebendigem Leibe begraben. Die Weltöffentlichkeit wusste davon. Aber sie schwieg, und schwieg und schwieg -- bis sich die Interessenslage änderte und die Kurden wichtig wurden. Das kollektive Gedächtnis des kurdischen Volkes hat diese Millionen Opfer von den Aufständen bis zum Giftgasangriff auf Halabja und auch darüber hinaus nicht vergessen.
