David Davis - So Some Politicians Do Have a Conscience The 12th June 2008 will go down in history as the day a politician proved to us that he is first and foremost a human being. David Davis acted on his conscience. He sacrificed his career for an act of humanity. He put his conscience before being a politician, before being a professional, before being a member of the Conservative Party. The problem with professionals -- and we are constantly reminded by politicians that they are the most honourable and professional of professionals - in the 21st century is that they are put in positions where they put their profession ahead of their human conscience. They call it making difficult decisions. The rules of the corporation, of the political party, of the government, have taken precedence over the qualities of being a human being. Nowhere was this issue more illustrated than in the House of Commons on the 12th June when MPs voted to extend to 42 days the number of days a suspected terrorist can be detained without charge. Initially sixty Labour MPs were prepared to act on their conscience, act as human beings first and Labour MPs second, and vote against the bill. After pressure from Labour whips that number dwindled down to 36, and with the help of the nine DUP MPs the vote was won by 9 votes. Did the 20-30 Labour MPs who changed their minds vote with their conscience or out of fear of Labour being defeated? Did those MPs represent their human constituents or the New Labour party machine? At stake was not just a further erosion of civil liberties, but the very principle of acting as a human being. David Davis felt -- politicians are allowed to feel emotions -- so strongly about the erosion of civil liberties that he resigned from his position as an MP and forced a by-election in his constituency - Haltemprice and Howden. Why did David take this decision? Because he believes our civil liberties are at risk. He can see that we are sleepwalking into a surveillance society. He believes that we as human beings have a right to keep our personal data private, not stored on a database for the state to monitor. He believes we are about to have forced upon us the most intrusive ID card in the world. He doesn't believe in locking up terror suspects for 42 days without charge. He doesn't believe the state should have more power to protect our freedom, at the expense of losing our freedom. He does believe that we as humans should have more rights like freedom, liberty, and privacy. This principle is not about David Davis the person; it is about an open and public debate on the erosion of our civil liberties. The Haltemprice and Howden by-election will be fought on this principle. So how have the mainstream media publicised the argument about loss of civil liberties?
