Hawk Hawk The Hawk family of aircraft, Designed initially by Hawker Siddeley at Kingston upon Thames and now built by BAE Systems in Brough has established an unrivalled reputation as a fast jet trainer. Capable of operating in extreme environments that range from the hot desert of the Middle East to the frozen tundra of the Arctic Circle. From every standpoint it outclasses the opposition. The HS1182 Hawk was unusual in being ordered in quantity from the drawing board there were no prototypes. The Hawk was designed to replace the Gnat and Hunter as an advanced trainer and the first Hawk to fly was XX154 on 21 August 1974. The first production deliveries were made in November 1976. In the mid 1980's RAF Hawks were modified as T.1As, wired to accept Sidewinders on the inboard pylons for emergency wartime use as air defence fighters alongside radar equipped Phantoms and Tornado F.2/F.3s. The Hawk has since been developed in four configurations: the Hawk 50 series including the Goshawk T-45 for the US Navy; Hawk 60 series current production trainer aircraft Hawk 100 advanced two-seat weapon systems trainer with ground attack capability; and Hawk 200 single-seat, multi-role combat aircraft. Since entering service with the Royal Air Force in 1976, over 800 Hawk aircraft have been delivered and it has been exported to Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Finland, Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia, Oman, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Switzerland, USA and Zimbabwe. A derivative of the Hawk 100, the MK127/128 LIFT lead-in-fighter is in service with the Royal Australian Air Force and the Canadian Air Force and has been ordered by South Africa, Bahrain and the UK. Twenty -one Hawk 115 aircraft have been ordered for NATO Flying Training in Canada (NFTC), the first of which was delivered in July 2000. In March 2004, the Indian Air Force signed a contract for the purchase of 66 Hawk 115 aircraft. The first 24 will be built by BAE in the UK and the remaining 42 will be built under license by Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) in India. Hawk 60 Series The Hawk 60, powered by an Ardour Mk.861 turbofan engine, an improved wing with leading edge fences and revised flap layout, giving improved airfield performance and Sidewinder capability, provides air combat manoeuvring and weapon conversion training Hawk 100 Series Hawk 100 is an advanced two-seat weapons systems trainer with enhanced ground attack capability. Changes are many and include a more powerful Adour 871 turbofan engine and revised wing with fixed leading edge droop to improve manoeuvrability, full width flaps. The Hawk 100 has also been developed into an advanced weapon systems trainer with enhanced ground attack capability. Hawk 200 The Hawk 200 series aircraft is optimised as a single seat lightweight fighter with full ground attack and air-to-air capability. The Hawk 200 is powered by an Adour 871 twin spool, low bypass ratio turbofan engine from Rolls-Royce. It features a combination of state-of-the-art digital computerised avionics with a small, uncomplicated and well proven airframe. The Hawk 200 and equivalent Hawk 100 two seater retain 80% commonality. The redesigned nose hoses a Westingouse APG-66H multimode radar.
