Hazards of Depleted Uranium Contamination Training DU Video Hazards of Depleted Uranium Contamination Training Video; Between October and December 1995, the U.S. Army's Depleted Uranium (DU) Project completed a series of training videos and manuals about depleted uranium munitions. This training regimen was developed as the result of recommendations made in the January 1993 General Accounting Office (GAO) report, Army Not Adequately Prepared to Deal with Depleted Uranium Contamination. The training materials were intended to instruct servicemen and women about the use and hazards of depleted uranium munitions. In addition, the training regimen included instructions for soldiers who repair and recover vehicles contaminated by depleted uranium. Metallic uranium (U) is a silver-white, lustrous, dense, weakly radioactive element. It is ubiquitous throughout the natural environment, and is found in varying but small amounts in rocks, soils, water, air, plants, animals and in all human beings. Natural uranium consists of a mixture of three radioactive isotopes which are identified by the mass numbers 238U (99.27% by mass), 235U (0.72%) and 234U (0.0054%). On average, approximately 90 µg (micrograms) of uranium exists in the human body from normal intakes of water, food and air. About 66% is found in the skeleton, 16% in the liver, 8% in the kidneys and 10% in other tissues. Uranium is used primarily in nuclear power plants. However, most reactors require uranium in which the 235U content is enriched from 0.72% to about 1.5-3%. Depleted uranium: The uranium remaining after removal of the enriched fraction contains about 99.8% 238U, 0.2% 235U and 0.001% 234U by mass; this is referred to as depleted uranium or DU. The main difference between DU and natural uranium is that the former contains at least three times less 235U than the latter. DU, consequently, is weakly radioactive and a radiation dose from it would be about 60% of that from purified natural uranium with the same mass. The behaviour of DU in the body is identical to that of natural uranium. Spent uranium fuel from nuclear reactors is sometimes reprocessed in plants for natural uranium enrichment. Some reactor-created radioisotopes can consequently contaminate the reprocessing equipment and the DU. Under these conditions another uranium isotope, 236U, may be present in the DU together with very small amounts of the transuranic elements plutonium, americium and neptunium and the fission product technetium-99. However, the additional radiation dose following intake of DU into the human body from these isotopes would be less than 1%. Applications of depleted uranium: Due to its high density, about twice that of lead, the main civilian uses of DU include counterweights in aircraft, radiation shields in medical radiation therapy machines and containers for the transport of radioactive materials. The military uses DU for defensive armour plate. DU is used in armour penetrating military ordnance because of its high density, and also because DU can ignite on impact if the temperature exceeds 600°C. Public Domain video. Hazards of the Ship Wrecking Trade ANCHOR: The ship wrecking trade is big in Bangladesh, but the workers who turn sea vessels into mountains of scrap metal, are very likely to be ship wrecked themselves. Here is a look at their dangerous livelihood. STORY: These ships, on their final journey to the breakers' yard in Bangladesh, bring with them a deadly cargo. The workers who reduce the huge vessels to piles of scrap metal and recyclable parts face the very real prospect of injury, disease and death. At least 10 people have been killed in the past year. Some of the country's ship breaking workforce of around 30,000 in more than 20 yards are now getting safety equipment and training - but it's not universal. [Nader Ali, Ship Yard Labourer]: "I have learned how to cut ships. Now I'm doing the job wearing boots on my feet, gloves on my hands, a helmet on my head and dark glasses over my eyes. It's still a risky job but we do it carefully." In the early days the casualties were mostly from explosions aboard scrapped oil tankers. More recent deaths have been the result of falling steel or falling workers. Health experts say carcinogenic chemicals and acetylene cutting equipment add to the risks of illness. [Akhtar Hossain Chowdhury, Dermatologist]: "These health hazards are mainly physical, mechanical, biological and psychological effects. These effects are mainly dermatitis, burn, and ulcer." Bangladesh's ship breakers produce 1.8 million tonnes of scrap steel a year. The ships come from several sources including western nations. The ship breakers say the scrap is worth a lot to a country that has no iron ore of its own. [Kamaluddin Ahmed, Ship Breakers Association]: "The re-rolling mills is dependent mostly on this. That's because the steel scraps sold abroad is very high so we cannot afford. We are using the generators to reuse in our factories and we are reusing the electric goods also here." The labourers get the equivalent of just under four dollars-forty for a 12-hour day. In a country where five per cent of its 150 million population is unemployed such work is the only way to feed their families despite the daily risk to life and limb. Hazards of Buying Prescription Drugs Online (June 2007) Many people are choosing to buy prescription drugs online, but unless they are very careful, this can be a risky undertaking. Drugs bought over the internet can be fake, substandard in potency, unapproved by the FDA, counterfeit, or just plain dangerous. For example some people who ordered tranquilizers, such as Ambien (zolpidem tartrate), Xanax (alprazolam), Lexapro (escitalopram oxalate) and Ativan (lorazepam), actually received a product that may have contained haloperidol, a powerful antipsychotic used to treat schizophrenia. Some of these people needed emergency medical treatment for difficulty breathing and muscle spasms. Haloperidol can also cause agitation and sedation. If patients are concerned that the tranquilizers they ordered may contain haloperidol, they can see photographs of the affected tablets above, and packages at the "Additional Information" link below. If the product resembles these photos, consumers should not take the drug. There has also been some concern lately about people buying Accutane over the Internet. Accutane can cause severe birth defects if taken by a pregnant woman. There is a special risk management program where women of childbearing age taking Accutane must register and undergo periodic pregnancy testing. But buying the drug over the Internet can circumvent all these precautions, and babies may be at risk. So, now when a person searches the Internet for Accutane or its generic equivalents, a link to an FDA web page that warns about this problem will appear. If buying medicines over the Internet, make sure the site is reputable. The site should be licensed by a State Board of Pharmacy, and have a registered pharmacist on hand to answer questions. Some sites display a so-called "VIPPS® seal" (Verified Internet Pharmacy Practice Sites™ Seal), which shows that they meet State and federal rules. And if the site does not require a prescription, it may not be legitimate. Additional Information: FDA MedWatch Safety Alert. Microwave oven, The Hidden Hazards. Microwave oven, The Hidden Hazards. Recent research shows that microwave oven-cooked food suffers severe molecular damage. When eaten, it causes abnormal changes in human blood and immune systems. Not surprisingly, the public has been denied details on these significant health dangers. Technology holds great promise when developed, promoted and used by ethical individuals and institutions. Harmful or immorally utilized technologies should spur us to take action to set things right. To that end, we share this information. The purpose of this report is to show proof - evidence - that microwave cooking is not natural, nor healthy, and is far more dangerous to the human body than anyone could imagine. However, the microwave oven manufacturers, Washington City politics, and plain old human nature are suppressing the facts and evidence. Because of this, people are continuing to microwave their food - in blissful ignorance - without knowing the effects and danger of doing so. Microwaves unsafe for baby's milk. "Microwaving baby formulas converted certain trans-amino acids into their synthetic cis-isomers. Synthetic isomers, whether cis-amino acids or trans-fatty acids, are not biologically active. Further, one of the amino acids, L-proline, was converted to its d-isomer, which is known to be neurotoxic (poisonous to the nervous system) and nephrotoxic (poisonous to the kidneys). It's bad enough that many babies are not nursed, but now they are given fake milk (baby formula) made even more toxic via microwaving." Microwaved blood kills patient. In 1991, there was a lawsuit in Oklahoma concerning the hospital use of a microwave oven to warm blood needed in a transfusion. The case involved a hip surgery patient, Norma Levitt, who died from a simple blood transfusion. It seems the nurse had warmed the blood in a microwave oven. This tragedy makes it very apparent that there's much more to "heating" with microwaves than we've been led to believe. Blood for transfusions is routinely warmed, but not in microwave ovens. In the case of Mrs. Levitt, the microwaving altered the blood and it killed her. It's very obvious that this form of microwave radiation "heating" does something to the substances it heats. It's also becoming quite apparent that people who process food in a microwave oven are also ingesting these "unknowns". http://curezone.com/foods/microwave_oven_risk.asp Tags: Scientology tom cruise ebaums message to xenu god microwave death ipod apple microsoft how sex porn |

Avoiding Hazards with Intra-aortic Balloons (Sept. 2007) A recent FDA article in the journal Nursing 2007 warns about unsafe practices using intra-aortic balloon pumps. It cites a case where a patient died after the balloon was allowed to remain in the aorta without pumping (to go dormant) for an extended period of time. The article cautions that a balloon being dormant for more than 15 minutes is hazardous, not only because the patient loses valuable cardiac support, but because blood becomes trapped in the folds of the deflated balloon, promoting the formation of clots. The article contains a number of recommendations to prevent this kind of problem. Here are a few of them: • When the pump is in use, frequently check that it is working properly, and monitor the patient's physiologic responses to the therapy. • Replace empty helium tanks within 15 minutes, and keep extra tanks nearby to minimize the time that the balloon is dormant. • If you cannot restore operation of the pump within 15 minutes, you must manually inflate and deflate the balloon. This should be done every five minutes if possible, and at a minimum, several times an hour. Keep this up until a new pump is in place or the balloon has been removed. • Pay immediate attention to a helium leak alarm. If you cannot determine the cause of the alarm right away, switch to another pump. If the alarm continues, this could indicate that the balloon has ruptured, which requires that the physician remove it immediately. Additional Information: Weil, K. On Guard for Intra-aortic Balloon Pump Problems. Stockyard Stoics - Occupational Hazards From the Catastrophe Album Lyrics What price will we pay for peace of mind? Will we pay with a share in genocide? Our nation's name written up in blood and sandbagged borders holding back the flood Flood of anger, flood of grief, atrocity beyond belief Can you believe the lies they told or the countless millions Halliburton sold? This way martial law and the dregs of history Our hands are scarlet stained and system still screaming: [Chorus:] Not enough blood for the US army Not enough blood for the 'president' Not enough blood for the television Not enough blood for the average citizen Or so they say, 'that's the price we pay for liberty' In Kosovo and the Philippines, South Korean side of the DMZ Colombian military regime-they know all about our American dream SUV's and cluster bombs, uranium and soccer moms Fly the flag in the dead of night and send the neighbor's kid to go and fight Fight and die for liberty and the market economy While our leaders count their take and the papers shake their fingers screaming: [Chorus] 1,2,3,6,8,10 thousand civilians in Iraq and forty thousand fathers never coming back To their children, hungry, up all night, waiting for signs of the morning light to come And many more in Afghanistan where the stars and stripes is the new Taliban You shall not dream of living free while our heavy hand is your democracy And our bullets fly over Palestine where the West Bank runs on Israeli time Tel Aviv café suicide attack-terrorism or desperation fighting back? 47: Earthrace & Richard Branson, Boat Fire Hazards, Sailing http://www.TheBoaters.TV (for higher res version) - Episode 47: First up today: Media sources in the United Kingdom are reporting that the Earthrace project has received a big thumbs up, and possibly more, from Sir Richard Branson. Earthrace is an Auckland, New Zealand-based charitable trust that is attempting to break the world record for circumnavigating the globe in a powerboat run on 100% renewable bio-diesel fuel. The current record of 75 days is held by British boat Cable & Wireless, made in 1998. The Earthrace crew believe they can do it in 65 days. If the bid succeeds it will be the first time an official UIM (that's the Union Internationale Motornautique) Powerboat world record has been broken using only renewable fuel. Many commentators are speculating that a sponsorship by Sir Richard Branson's Virgin brand is on the horizon, but thus far, no checks have been written. On the mend from damaged suffered during the first attempt at setting a new record earlier this summer, Earthrace is now on an 18-month promotional tour to 40 cities. The Earthrace crew of four, led by skipper Pete Bethune, will begin their next 2nd attempt at this 24,000 nautical mile journey from Malaga, Spain in March 2008, and who knows, they'll quite possibly be bearing a Virgin logo. All images and video used in this segment were shot by cinematographers Ryan Heron and Lance Wordsworth, and are property of Lance Wordsworth. For more information, you can visit their official website at http://www.Earthrace.net Boat Maintenance & Safety Advice: Does Your Boat's Have Hidden Fire Hazards? Today we feature advice for how to seek out -- and snuff out -- sneaky fire starters that may be lurking where they could do real harm to your boat or, worse, your family. Story contributed by boating writers Gordon & Janet Groene. During the RYA's Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta in Weymouth & Portland England, british 49er skiff sailing duo, Steve Morrison and Ben Rhodes, were told by organisers that they were not allowed to compete unless they changed the name of their boat. The team said the boat, "Jackie Big T**S," was named after a song by The Kooks. This well-known 49er two-man skiff duo just so happened to be nominated that same week to represent Great Britain in the Olympic games.
