Hebron: One City, Two Nations - Israel/Palestine March 1996 From Hebron, two women talk about the tensions of living in a divided city. Ruth Hizmi, one of 400 Jewish settlers, moved to the West Bank 9 years ago. She believes that just being in her kitchen in Hebron is an act of faith. But on her way to work she gets spat on by Arab neighbours. Afifeh, a young Palestinian woman, lives on the 'cease-fire line' between the Jews and 100,000 Palestinians. From her cobbled wall, she overlooks a brand new playground built for Jewish children. Conflict in Hebron begins with the ancient Tomb of the Patriarchs. As the burial Place of Abraham, it holds great religious significance for both Jews and Muslims. Two years ago, a Jewish settler, Baruch Goldstein fired 119 bullets into a crowd of praying Muslims. Ever since worship for both religions has been strictly regulated by tense Israeli soldiers. Noam Arnon, spokesperson for the Jewish community, denounces recent Palestinian elections. He takes politicians to the street where there have been attacks on Jewish settlers. Ruth wants peace but she is passionately opposed to moving out of Hebron. Afifeh is simply resigned to the hard fact that Jews and Muslims can never live together in peace. Tags: Hebron Religion Land Muslims Christians Jews Conflict West Bank |

Israeli troops shoot Hebron family - 05 June 07 Officially, the Israelis say their soldiers opened fire only after a group of men assaulted them and tried to grab their weapons. Those who were there say that's a lie. 05 June 2007 The images are as shocking as the story itself. But for those who have lived under these conditions for forty years.....incidents like this no longer come as a surprise. Tags: hebron palestine aljazeera jazeera palestinian israeli |

Israeli army evicts dozens of Hebron settlers Ultra-religious Jewish families had illegally squatted in barricaded apartments in city's market area Tuesday August 7th, 2007 Today in Hebron, Israeli troops used sledgehammers to smash through welded doors and concrete bunkers to get at Jewish settlers who threw stones and poured oil and water on them. The settlers had claimed ownership of two houses. Dozens of settlers and soldiers were slightly injured in the melee. Hundreds of thousands of other Israelis remain in illegal settlements in the West Bank. They were established after Israel began its occupation of the territory in 1967 following the Six Day War. Hebron is home to about 150,000 Palestinian Muslims and Christians as well as 700 ultra-religious Israeli settlers who are often heavely armed. Prior to riots in 1929, there was a Jewish Quarter in biblical Hebron. Twelve orthodox soldiers who had refused to take part in today's operation were earlier sentenced to 28 days in jail. The evictions came one day after the Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian President and Fatah leader Mahmoud Abbas met for three hours in the West Bank town of Jericho. In a deal with the Palestinian Authority, Israel agreed to evacuate 80 percent of Jewish settlers from Hebron in 1997. But Israel kept control of Hebron's market. It has been a closed military zone since 1994 when a Jewish extremist, Baruch Goldstein, shot and killed 29 Palestinians at the Tomb of the Patriarchs, sacred to both Muslims and Jews. APTN cameras recorded today's drama as it began just after sunrise and ended about three hours later. Tags: therealnews israel hebron |

B'Tselem: Stoning Neighbors in Hebron In January 2007, B'Tselem launched "Shooting Back", a video advocacy project focusing on the Occupied Territories. We provide Palestinians living in high-conflict areas with video cameras, with the goal of bringing the reality of their lives under occupation to the attention of the Israeli and international public, exposing and seeking redress for violations of human rights. In March 2007, a new settlement was established in the a-Ras neighborhood of Hebron. Since its establishment, there has been a noticeable increase in harassment and attacks by settlers and Israeli security forces on the neighborhood's Palestinian residents. The footage shown here was filed between May and August 2007. www.btselem.org Tags: israel palestine hebron human rights groundreport citizen journalism |

Hebron becoming a 'ghost town' - 21 Jun 07 Hebron reflects the complexity and brutality of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. It was illegally occupied by Israel in 1967. As a result, many Palestinian families were forced to leave their homes and Israeli settlers moved in. Life is incredibly tough for families remaining there. There right to earn a living and even taking children to school becomes an ordeal. Sami Zeidan reports from Hebron. Secret Hebron: The School Run - 28-min documentary March 2003 Palestinian children in Hebron regularly risk being attacked by Israeli soldiers as they try to go school. Children in the old part of Hebron are kept under curfew for months at a time, making it impossible for them to go to class. However, instead of giving up on their right to an education, the children scrabble across the roofs to avoid soldiers. "Whenever I go to school it's so scary. When we meet soldiers they force us back with tear gas or percussion grenades," states 12 year old Islam. A local doctor reports treating children whose legs or hands have been broken by soldiers. The violence and disruption has a severe psychological impact on the children. Pass rates in Arabic fell from 71% to 38% between 2000 and 2001 and parents claim that the children are becoming more violent. With even young children now being treated as terrorists, the prospect of peace looks distant. Tags: Israel Palestine Children Hebron School Run Journeyman Pictures |

visit Tuba in the South Hebron hills Saturday 1-12-07 The village of Tuba in the South Hebron hills, close to Twaneh, is in a state of severe, continual distress because of relentless attacks by its neighbors, the settlers of Chavat Maon (one of the most vicious of the "illegal outposts" that still remains in place, years after the government pledged to remove it). All access roads to the village are controlled completely by the settlers, including the walking path used by the children to reach their school in Twaneh. In 2005, after several international volunteers who accompanied the children were badly wounded by settlers, and as a result of public pressure, the IDF began supplying a daily escort for the children on their way to school. Even if we put aside the shameful fact that innocent children cannot reach their school without a military escort, the problem itself is still unsolved. Settler violence against the schoolchildren, and against the villagers of Tuba generally, has continued and even worsened; recently there have been several particularly severe cases of attack by settlers. Residents of Tuba are also prevented from reaching many of their fields for routine agricultural work such as plowing and sowing Tags: SouthHebronHillsw WestBank Palestin Occupation |
