"Heigh-Ho, Everybody!" (Rudy Vallee, 1929) Rudy Vallee was one of the first broadcast entertainers to discover the value of a signature tune ("our radio greeting")--he commissioned Heigh-Ho Everybody from composer Harry Woods. The song was named for New York's Heigh-Ho Club, where Rudy & the Yankees attained their first great success (and radio contract). HEIGH-HO, EVERYBODY! When songbirds are singing, here's all they keep singing, "Heigh-Ho, everybody, heigh-ho!" The breeze says each morning, when daylight is dawning, "Heigh-Ho, everybody, heigh-ho!" Every star up in the sky, looking down here below, has a twinkle in his eye and says, "heigh-ho, heigh-ho!" So I'll just begin it, there's happiness in it, "Heigh-Ho, everybody, heigh-ho!" More from Answers.Com: "One of the most popular entertainers of the '30s, Rudy Vallée was one of the few vocalists to begin crooning before the advent of Bing Crosby. Famed for singing through a megaphone and introducing his performances with a salutary "Heigh-Ho, Everybody," Vallée recorded into the mid-'40s and enjoyed a renaissance during the '60s after high-profile appearances on Broadway. Born in Vermont, though he grew up in Maine, Rudy Vallée learned to play the alto saxophone and clarinet. He joined the Navy at the age of 16, but was dismissed after it was discovered he had lied about his age. He studied at Yale and the University of Maine, then took a year off during the mid-'20s to play with the Savoy Havana Band at London's famous Savoy Hotel. Vallée was leading his first band (the Connecticut Yankees) by 1928, though he avoided taking vocals. A stint at the exclusive Heigh-Ho Club in New York gave him his first widespread exposure (and his introductory catch phrase, "Heigh-Ho Everybody"). During the following year, he gained a large audience through radio, vaudeville appearances, and a feature film, The Vagabond Lover..." For a husband was composed by John Gamble and referenced in Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing This song came from a performance of the Nashville Early Music Ensemble at the First Presbyterian Church in Columbia, TN on Sunday, February 10, 2008. The Concert was entitled She Loves Me, She Loves Me Not and was a Valentine's Day Tribute. The ensemble is designed to perform the vocal and instrumental music of the Medieval and Renaissance periods as well as traditional folk music from several world cultures. The twenty-member ensemble features musicians with diverse music backgrounds but all with experience in early music. The instruments featured in this concert were viols, violin, rebec, lute, ud, guitars, psaltery, harp, recorders, and a wide variety of percussion. The director is Dr. Gerald Moore, a retired music professor from Lipscomb University, who taught music theory and directed the Lipscomb Early Music Consort for over twenty-five years.
