Hellenes The beauties, the open wounds, the leaders, the unjustice the greeks had and still have to suffer, the heritage through the centuries. The music is the zebekiko of Eydokia. The silent end of the clip is dedicated to the greek pilot, the immortal eagle of Crete, Konstantinos Iliakis, who got killed over the greek Aegean Sea by the idiotical unprofessional ignorance of a turkish pilot a few weeks ago. He was only in his early 30's and he left two children in the ages of 2 and 5 behind. My notice about him in greek at the very end means: We won't forget. This is my first selfmade videoclip. I have created a slideshow with many pictures and I have added some comments or information, which are difficult to read in such small format as the flv is... I couldn't make it any better as a beginner. ;-) [For those, who want to download a flv, the user Dellaporta has made with her advice that miracle possible. :D This is her tipp: http://sakisarticles.pbwiki.com/HOW%20TOs THANK YOU!:D] ... the Doric Mode: Heracles and the Hellenes The Dorians were the archetype of Greek masculinity. In their culture, men strove to perfect their bodies and grow stronger and faster. The Dorians include great warriors like the spartans, macedonians, corinthians, cretans, and others. The art is mostly from the French Neo-Classical painter Jacques-Louis David. The singer is Notis Sfakianakis (Νότης Σφακιανάκης) singing 'να χαρείς' - NA HAREIS (Be Glad). Here is the historical context for the Dorians: The Mycenaeans were the first Greeks to become Kingdoms in Greece. They invaded many surrounding areas, such as Minoa, Troy, Anatolia. Much of their war with Troy is recorded by Homer in his Illiad. That period of Greek history is known as the Late Helladic. Much of their world has been lost to us, but we do know that after their conquest of Minoa (Crete), another Greek tribe coming from north of Thessaly (Macedonia today) invaded and possibly was the cause of the destruction of Mycenae. The Dorians (Δωριεῖς) have often been linked with the Sea-Peoples, because they were great sailors. After these dark ages, where the foreign traces on Greek culture were destroyed, new city states emerged, each championing its own unique culture. The Dorians, who had settled in Macedonia, West Greece (Doris was a city in Central Greece), and much of the Peloponnese, had also their own way of life. It was a life of physical endurance and a love of things military. The Ancient Greeks viewed the Doric mode of music as pertaining to masculinity, seeing that it was evocative of power, strength and discipline. Dorian comes form the word for spear Dory (Δόρυ), which characterized them as a violent tribe. The Doric style of architecture is one of robustness and strength, and is less refined than the Ionian. The Dorians had also numerous colonies around the Greece, settling in Crete and the twelve islands to the west, to the seven islands and syracuse (sicily) to the east, and to Apollonia and Epidamnus (modern Durrës in Albania) in Ancient Illyria. The great rivalry between the Ionians and Dorians was shown in the Peloponnesian War. The Dorian invasion is too lengthy a topic to do it justice in a three minute video. Enjoy, and leave your comments! King Constantine I of the Hellenes Constantine I King of the Hellenes. He was born in Athens on 2 August 1868. The son of the longest reigning Monarch in Greece, King George I. His mother was Olga Konstantinovna of Russia. He had Royal Byzantine blood in his veins, from his mother, a direct descendant of Euphrosyne Doukaina Kamatera, the wife of Byzantine Emperor Alexios III the Angelos. King Constantine I was a giant. He stood at 6 feet 6 inches with piercing blue eyes. A Nordic war God with perfect Athenian accent. His German was spoken with the Berlin accent. He was educated at Heidelberg University, the oldest University in Germany, founded in 1386. He married Princess Sophie of Prussia the sister of Kaiser Wilhelm the II, the last German Emperor and the last Prussian King. Constantine the I, admired Kaiser Wilhelm II and his sympathies lied with the Central powers. He spoke Greek perfectly, with the Athenian accent and idioms. He had a practical Prussian mind. Firmly believed the Kaiser will win the War. Constantine I became King after his father King George I of the Hellenes was assassinated by an anarchist in Thessaloniki in 1913. King Constantine I was exiled twice, once by the British and French troops in June 1917 and once by the Venizelist revolutionaries in September 1922, "abdicated", and was succeeded by his eldest son George II. He was the commander of the Greek forces during the Hellenic triumphs of the two Balkan wars. Venizelos on 6.22.1913 sent this telegram to King Constantine I or XII:" Με το ευτυχές τέρμα και του δευτέρυ πολέμου υπό τον μέγαν στρατηλάτην βασιλέα, όστις διά του ξίφους του εμεγάλωσε την Ελλάδα, η φιλτάτη πατρίς καταλαμβάνει την ανήκουσαν αυτή θέσιν εν τω κόσμω και με σταθερόν βήμα θέλει χωρήσει εις ευρύτατον μέλλον, ασφαλίζουσα το μεγαλείον και την ευημερίαν αυτής". Venizelos thanked the King "for increasing the size of Greece with his sword." On 6.28.1913 King Constantine XII responded thus to Venizelos: "Νέα και ένδοξος εποχή διανοίγεται ενώπιον ημών. Εις πίστωσιν δε της ευγνωμοσύνης και της προς υμάς υπολήψεώς μου απονέμω υμίν τον Μεγαλόσταυρον του βασιλικού μου Τάγματος του Σωτήρος. Η πατρίς σάς είναι ευγνώμων". King Constantine responded: "A new glorious era is starting...the Motherland will always be grateful to you." Hellas was united as one. King Constantine was King and commander of the Hellenic Army during the Asia Minor campaign. Inherited the occupation of the Smyrna area and Northwest Asia Minor, occupied during the summer of 1920, where over a million Greeks were living, from Venizelos and Lloyd George. The aim of the march to Ankara campaign, was to get Kemal to accept the Sevres Treaty, end the war and recapture Constantinoupolis from "the Allies", England. Constantin-oupolis was his town. He wanted to finish the job. Dimitrios Gounaris said in defense of the Ankara campaign: "What would become of the Hellenic populations, of the Asia Minor, if we withdraw our forces"? The Italians, Soviet Communists, French and English in that order, they were all, aiding Kemal. Tiny Hellas had to win a titanic struggle against them four and some Venizelists. King Constantine I and Dimitrios Gounaris were not afraid of the odds against them. They tried. The contemporary historians who mock the fact that Hadjanestis was planning the attack on Constantinoupolis, evidently, are not too familiar with the Constantine XI Palaiologos legend nor that more than 300,000 Greeks lived in the Constantinoupolis area. The campaign failed and the Greek civilization of Asia Minor ended with the Venizelos and Kemal agreement of the exchange of Populations. For more on Constantine XI Paleologos: http://rumkatkilise.org/constantineXI.htm Subsequently, Venizelos handed to Kemal, in 1930, the properties of the uprooted Greeks of the Asia Minor. Like a new Chamberlain "he achieved peace in our times" being wined and dined by the butcher Kemal, among diplomatic pomposities, in Ankara. One cannot question Venizelos' brilliance as a strategist, and as one of the greatest political geniuses of Europe in his time; perhaps the greatest political mind that Greece has ever produced. His post 1920 record, however, is tainted. The Byzantine Emperor Constantine XI Palaiologos "O Marmaromenos Vasilias" is still waiting, guarded by the angel, in Agia Sophia, for the Hellenic King, to finish the job. King Constantine XII of the Hellenes, died in Palermo Italy, 3 months later. He was only 55. A Measure Of Understanding Queen Frederica of the Hellenes A measure of understanding Queen Frederica of the Hellenes. A true blue aristocrat. The granddaughter of Kaiser Wilhelm II. Princess of Hanover, Duchess of Brunswick and Lunenburg. She was the mother of ex-King Constantine II. The Queen, the Greek left, loves to hate, even today. The clip is based on her 1971 book "A Measure Of Understanding". No Hellenic Queen, was vilified as much as Queen Frederica was. This is her side of the story. For the heroic struggle of tiny Greece against the Axis powers she says: "The spirit of Greece had wings again. Nothing was impossible", when Greece offered the world the first victory against the Axis, chasing the Italians, through Albania in World War II. "Hence you will not say that Greeks fight like heroes but that heroes fight like Greeks." she repeats Sir Winston Churchill's quote. And: "Two world powers against small Greece. What a glory for us and what a shame for others." A young aristocrat, surrounded by communist revolutionaries and palace sycophants well schooled in Byzantine intrigue, she had to be a quick study. She did more than "do in Rome as Romans do " she went out of her way and embraced her adopted country and people. There is a picture, of her and King Paul being literally carried on the shoulders, of ex-communist prisoners in Macronisos, in her book "A measure of understanding" p.114 picture 13 here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/14272407@N03/1984639520/ She became Queen, on April 1st 1947, when King George II died, having been recently restored to the throne on September 1, 1946. During the war against the communist insurrection of 1944-1949, the Queen set up 53 child-camps Παιδο(υ)πόλεις, to help orphan and poor children. Alexandra Mela and Lina Tsaldari's Commissioned Ladies organization were also instrumental in locating and caring about the children. She toured Greece during these difficult years, where 10% of the Hellenic population was refugees: "I must have danced in every village square" she said, comment on picture 15. Red Cross and the United Nations estimates 28000 Greek children were abducted by the communists and taken behind the Iron Curtain for "re-education / brainwashing". The Queen personally visited the camps and there are Hellenic Royal records, that prove, 33989 children visited the camps from 1947 until 1964. Queen Frederica worked tirelessly for the cause of Liberty, even offering to carrying this struggle behind the Iron Curtain against the brutal invasion of Hungary by the USSR on November 4, 1956, lobbying relentlessly, for the Hellenic causes, to US Secretary of State General George C. Marshall, Field Marshall Smuts and Sir Winston Churchill even Marshal Tito. Getting political support and desperately needed economic aid for war ravaged Greece. One does not expect the communists, or their sympathizers, to acknowledge, any of her efforts. Her influence on then young ex-King Constantine II, was a motherly protective instinct, rather than her "wanting political power or dominating her family". One should acknowledge ex-King Constantine's mistakes were his and his alone. Constantine was only 27 years old in 1967. The coup leaders were both ruthless and determined to succeed, no matter what. The King needed a good mentor in the Palace, he had none. History, the harshest of judges, will be kinder to Frederica. Her finest hour was during the difficult years 1947-1957, when her travels from Belgrade to India, helped Greece weather the biggest storm in its history, visiting injured soldiers, lobbying ceaselessly for uniting Cyprus with the Motherland. "The prestige of England for us foreigners lies not in the greatness of her Empire, nor has it dwindled yet in the value of a small island, but it lies in the greatness of her spirit" Letter to Sir Winston Churchill 3.4.1957 p.187. "A small Greek island has become the test case. Unimportant as Cyprus is, she is like a mirror within which each nation will see its own soul". Letter to General Marshall 3.29.1956 p.192. In her book she offers no opinion on the Junta. Richard Clogg in his book "A short history of Greece" he describes Frederica as "strong - willed". She clashed with conservative icons Field Marshall Papagos, and Constantine Karamanlis, whom she saw as overstepping their bounds, and they saw her as overstepping her bounds. It is true, her family obeyed a state order, to join the Bund Deutscher Madel organization, of Hitler youth. The people of Greece are fair people. Let this clip be a small step to reevaluating Queen Frederica's contributions to Hellenic history. Queen Frederica of the Hellenes, died in Madrid Spain,on February 6,1981, during cataract surgery, at the age of 64. She is buried in Greece, in the Tatoi mausoleum, next to Palo, her love: "We shall always be together. There is no separation, just a long road." The trial of the 6 and King Constantine I of the Hellenes The trial of the 6 and King Constantine I. Practically the whole conservative leadership of Hellas, was executed by the Venizelist revolutionaries on November 15, 1922. Dimitrios Gounaris 55, (Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Justice), Nikolaos Theotokis 44, (Minister of Defense), Nikolaos Stratos 50, (Minister of the Interior and Prime Minister), Giorgos Baltatzis 56, (Minister of Foreign Affairs), Petros Protopapadakis 68, (Minister of National Economy and Prime Minister) and General Georgios Hadjanestis 59,(Commander of the Army of Asia Minor) were Greek patriots elected or appointed in the name of the people of Hellas, to carry out their policy. Not the policy of the Venizelists. This was the essence of the charges against them. King Constantine I, the person the people of Hellas gave 98% of the vote, should have abdicated because England and France were against him, this is how the logic of the Venizelists went. King Constantine, unlike Venizelos' 1917 entry with French bayonets in Athens, returned after an overwhelming mandate by the Greek people in free and fair elections. The ministers, the General and King Constantine I, carried out their duties honestly and honorably as representatives of the will of the Hellenic people who voted them into office in a landslide election in 1920. Kathimerini and Eleftheron Vima of 1922 offer two opposing views on the topic. Dimitrios Gounaris, despite running high fever, wrote a 67 page defense brief, refuting all 15 of "the charges" against them. It was a shameful moment in the proud 3000 year history of Hellas. Some of the liberals, in Greece, with a different label, "socialists", 50 years later, were renouncing the pro Western policy of the Greek conservatives, that Venizelos carried out 50 years earlier. Shamefully, the hero of the Balkan wars Theodoros Pangalos, was responsible for the court martial and the convictions. Also Mr. Pangalos was responsible for the August 15 1909 "revolution" that wanted the removal of Prince Constantine I from the Army. It will not be the last; let us remember who started the interference of the Army in politics in Greece. It was the "liberals" in 1909. Years later, even Pangalos admitted they were not traitors: "I do not think they were traitors willfully, but were tragic but necessary victims in the altar of the Motherland." To which we reply by saying, Mr. Pangalos: "How dreadful it is, when the right judge, judges wrong." Sophocles, Antigone. On 11.18.1934 Georgios Vlahos wrote a wonderful article in Kathimerini about the 6: "they tried to complete a tragic expedition, following the will of the Hellenic people..." This was not the only infamous act of the Venizelist "supporters". Gyparis' "security batallions" thugs, executed, in cold blood, on July 31, 1920 Ion Dragoumis, the brains of the struggle for Greek Makedonia against the Bulgarians 1904-1908 and brother in law of hero Pavlos Melas, he was only 44 years old. King Paul I and Queen Frederica of the Hellenes King Paul I and Queen Frederica of the Hellenes. King Paul I was born in Athens on 12.14.01. He was exiled by the Venizelists between 1917 and 1920. He married Frederica in 1938. He escaped to Crete with Frederica, during the nazi occupation of Greece and then when Crete fell on 6.1.1941, he escaped to Cairo with the Hellenic government to continue the struggle against the Axis. Frederica spent most of the time of the occupation of Greece, by the nazis, in South Africa. Palo was in Egypt and she missed him terribly she says in her book "A measure of understanding." Frederica on 10.20.1944 wrote to Mr. Benaki the Red Cross coordinator: "I have prepared 25 mobile clinics, including surgical units, children's units and blood transfusion units. All these things I want to send to Greece as soon as possible." A measure of understanding. President Harry S. Truman, did not pass the buck. He made a difference in the Hellenic struggle for freedom. The quote "the buck stops here" was his trademark. In a speech to a joint session of Congress on 3.12.1947 he gave notice to dictators whether communist or others, everywhere, and placed America squarely on the side of freedom loving people the world over, with the Truman doctrine: "It is the policy of the United States to support free peoples who are resisting attempted subjugation by armed minorities or by outside pressures." Truman's aid was decisive and preserved freedom and democracy in Greece. The Harry Truman library can be found here: http://www.trumanlibrary.org/buckstop.htm Secretary Marshall's, Marshall plan was also decisive economically: "We're answering the call of a valiant ally who has suffered much, of a country to which this American democracy owes much. We're coming to the aid of all the Greek people in the hope that they may enable you to meet a trying period and to help you to establish a unified, stable and peaceful Greece" Marshall said. Above all the people of Greece were ultimately responsible for preserving freedom and democracy in the land that it was born. The liberals fought as hard against the communists. The Sofoulis (liberal) government in power since 7.9.1947 had always advocated national reconciliation. It was compelled by the facts to both proclaim and wage a hard fight against the armed communists. This continued until Sofoulis died on 6.27.1949. Vafiadis was always popular in the FYROM area. This is a quote from a FYROM supporter trying to justify the unjustifiable, the shameful abduction of the Hellenic children during the war by the communists: " Zahariadis and Vafiadis, the two Greek leaders, started the civil war in Greece on March 31, 1946 to 1949. Greeks and Macedonians were fighting the fascist government of Greece, with the help of Great Britain and U.S.A. The communists lost the war. In 1948, the two leaders gathered the little boys and girls aged from 2 - 7 years old (about 20, 000 Macedonians and 8,000 Greeks) were sent to the socialist countries to protect them from the civil war." Another tower of intellect, referring to the other two. George Papandreou was instrumental in passing the Varkiza agreement of 2.12.1945 that provided for the disarming of the communists. Both Royalists and Republicans fought the communists. It was no accident the communists renamed the Republican Army in 1946 to "Democratic S.E." Edgar O'Balance "The Greek Civil War" p.121. "The Greek communists had neglected the primary principle of insurgent warfare: that of winning the minds and hearts of the majority of the people" p.210. King Paul I died on 3.6.1964 from stomach cancer at the age of 63. He was a good King and it was a tragedy that he died so young. His inexperienced son Constantine II was the new King, at the age of 24. Queen Frederica of the Hellenes, died in Madrid Spain,on February 6,1981, during cataract surgery, at the age of 64. She is buried in Greece, in the Tatoi mausoleum, next to Palo, her love: "We shall always be together. There is no separation, just a long road." King George I of the Hellenes Constitutional Monarch King George I of the Hellenes. The longest reigning Monarch in Greece, the founder of the Glücksburg dynasty, reigned for 50 years, between 1863-1913. The first Hellenic King, who was elected, not selected, unanimously, by the Hellenic Assembly/Parliament. Article 24 of the Constitution of 1844, according to which "The King appoints and removes his Ministers" was making the Ministers subservient to the King. King George I proclaimed the principle that: "the Prime Minister will be appointed from the party that has the majority in the Assembly/Parliament (Vouli in Greek)". This is the founding principle of Constitutional Monarchy. Crown Democracy was born. His motto was: "Ίσχυς μου η Αγάπη του Λαού" meaning "My power is derived from the love of the people." A believer in the rule of Law and the Constitution of 1864, that protected human rights and was against unreasonable search and seizures, as the embodiment of these principles. King George I expressly pledged, in a speech from Parliament in 1875: "I demand as a prerequisite, of "all that I call beside me" to assist me in governing the country, to possess the manifest confidence and trust of "the majority of the Nation's representatives". Furthermore, I accept this approval to "stem from the Parliament", as without it the harmonious functioning of the polity would be impossible". His assassination in 1913 was truly a National tragedy because his son Constantine I, was not popular with "the allies" and Greece paid dearly in 1922, for this. The Venizelists in 1911 revised the Constitution, gave land to landless farmers and increased human rights protections. The second period of Crowned Democracy was ushered with the 1952 Constitution, it lasted until 1967. The 1975 Constitution, that the Ethnarch Constantine Karamanlis, devised, with the 1986 and 2001 revisions, is the current Constitution of Hellas and thereby establishes a Republic, after the 1974 plebiscite. It is worth noting, that ex-King Constantine II was not allowed to come to Greece and campaign in December 1974. He was only allowed to send taped messages. The Royalists got 30% of the vote, in 1974. One last important note: the current 1975 Constitution with its 1986 and 2001 revisions, a product of bitter Hellenic experience with dictatorships, in Article 110, does not allow for amending Article 1, that defines the form of Government as Parliamentary Republic, along with Article 2 (Protect Human Rights), Article 4 (Equality before the law), Article 5 (Freedom of association, Personal liberty) Article 13 (Freedom of Religion) and Article 26 (Separation of Powers). Mass Grave of Pontian Greeks Discovered in Turkey (Greek) Asia Minor, home of the Hellenes for 4000 years. Ionia and Pontus, once home to millions of Hellenes has been torn from the cradle of Hellenism by the butchers of the Balkans, the Turks. The ethnic cleansing of 1 million Pontian Hellenes in 1915 and 1.2 million Ionian Hellenes from Ionia in 1922 cannot be written off and left to dust in the pages of history. We have an obligation to those that lived there, and to those that died there, to tell their story and to correct the historical mistake that is Turkey. 300 (Trailer 2007) it is spring 480 BC, Persian King Xerxes, continuing his father Darius' master plan to conquer the Hellenic city-states, arrives in Hellas. The previous Persian invasion and diplomatic attempts have already turned most northern Hellas tribes and states to the Persian side. But the people of Athens and Sparta, the largest Hellenic powers at the time, feel quite insulted by the Persian emissaries' request to surrender to Xerxes, and so slay them. In Sparta, King Leonidas consults the local oracle, who gives two options: Either a spartan king will have to be sacrificed, or Sparta will be burned to the ground. A year earlier (481, BC) a Panhellenic consortium of all southern city-states had already recognized the superiority of the Spartan army (the best organized and trained army at the time) and had declared King Leonidas as supreme commander of the combined Hellenic army. It is then decided that a small force should block Xerxes' way to southern Hellas in the Thermopylae passage. This passage was, at that time, 12 meters wide. The great historian Herodotus, possibly exaggerating, states that there were 1,700,000 Persians (their true number could have been anywhere from 100,000 to 1,000,000) against 7,000 Hellenic hoplites and slaves, including the 300 men of the Spartan King elite guard. King Xerxes waited four days for the Hellenes to be frightened and eventually surrender and was quite astonished by his opponents' complete apathy. Xerxes tried to convince Leonidas to drop weapons, give up his position, kneel before him and live on as a local governor under Xerxes. King Leonidas replied "molon lave," which means "Come and get them." The three-day battle began, with the 300 Spartans and 700 Thespians (the other Hellenes where sent by Leonidas to protect passages to their flanks) slaying thousands of Persians with minimal losses. The whole Persian campaign would have failed if it hadn't been for Efialtes, who showed Xerxes a secret passage to the Hellenic flanks. After a final battle led by King Xerxes himself, the Hellenic force was slain and their heroism and glory was written forever in history. From the beginning of the battle, the Hellenes buried their dead in the spot where they fell. Then battle signs where made for the dead of each Hellenic faction. For the Pelloponisians, (including the 300 Spartans) the sign generally read (free translation) "In this place 4,000 Pelloponisians fought 30 millions)." For the 300 Spartans (Lakaedaemonians), the sign reads (free translation) "Oh foreigner, tell the Lakaedaemonians that we are buried here obeying their laws," meaning that they never hesitated and never retreated from the enemy. The impact of the battle was enormous for both sides. The Persians' morale dropped to zero, and the Hellenes lost their fear for the Persian conqueror and organized their defense. After several successful battles, the Hellenes ultimately defeated the Persian army and repelled their invasion in the Battle of Plataea in 479 BC. Tags: 300 Movie Trailer |

Mikis Theodorakis -Axios Esti- Anna Mpenaki-Psarouda 1 Mr. Malouchos interviews the President of The Parliament of The Hellenes, and asks the reason why the entire parliament, with overwhelming multipartisan support, voted to publish under its aegis The 59-CD and one DVD set containing Mr. Theodorakis's life narratives. The following partial translation is humbly submitted for those few that may not be familiar with the glorious Hellenic Language, except for Messrs. Clogg and Bien. Mr. Malouchos: "Mrs. President, The Parliament of The Hellenes decided to place under its Aegis the special edition of the 'Documented Eyewitness' series: 'Mikis Theodorakis -Axios Esti- (Praiseworty Be He). An audio CD set consisting of fifty-nine disks, as well as, a two-volume printed edition containing the narrative of Mikis Theodorakis's entire life; A political Hellenic life spanning eighty years. Why did The Parliament make such a decision?" Mrs. Anna Mpenaki-Psarouda: " In my opinion, it was an imperative, a self-evident/exlanatory decision, because Mikis Theodorakis -and I start from his political persona- is a stand-out personality that has played a significant role in the Hellenic scene. His political journey/career has been a long one, filled with many perturbations and consequently is, in some way, a mirror image/reflection of the political life of contemporary Hellas. He is an intellectual that has contributed with his deepest thoughts and with eloquence that characterizes them. He was member of the Parliament, as well as a Minister, consequently a prominent part of our political history. If, in addition to the above accomplishments, we include Mikis Theodorakis's other persona, and with that I mean, that of the great artist, you understand that The Parliment of the Hellenes, under the circumstances, could not remain on the sidelines, indifferent, and allow the initiative of two private-sector entities to steal the thunder, so to speak. On the contrary, The Paliament, wanted to play an active role in the honor to be bestowed, as well as, to contribute to the continuation and preservation of Mr. Theodorakis's work." His Chronicles were recorded over a period spanning more than two months at Mr. Theodorakis's house that has clear view of the Parthenon.
