HELSTON FURRY DANCE 2006 - The Ancient Furry Dance The Furry Dance dates from so many centuries ago that no one knows how old it is. Helston in Cornwall holds this dance every year on 8th May unless it falls on a Sunday or a Monday, in which case it takes place on the Saturday before. There are four dances: The Morning Dance before breakfast. The Children's Dance, The Ancient Furry Dance at noon and the last Dance in the late afternoon. The main Furry Dance is danced by gentlemen and ladies dressed as if they were going to Ascot for the races while the others are danced in white and green for the gentlemen and summer dresses for the ladies. This second recording is of the main Dance held at Noon. It must never be confused with the "Floral Dance" which was a rip off composed about 1908 using similar music. This is a film of Flora Day, not just the dancers, there is a dedicated film available for this purpose, although you'll probably see every dancer here too. The film covers the period from 6th May 2008 to 9th May 2008, with some material from months before as preparations started. It was made as a record of the Day, and of those aspects most are unaware of. How is the town decorated, and where does the decoration come from? How do shops and houses accommodate over 1000 dancers in a procession? and who cleans up afterwards? On Flora Day, the early dance at 7.00, the Hal-An-Tow, traditional singing with Cadgwith Singers, the childrens' dance with 1100 dancers, the spectacle of the midday dance, and the fun at 5.00 were captured and are all here.
