Peach isn't exactly a new artist and this isn't exactly her Blues Rock Records debut. But when you have the singular pleasure of discovering this ever-fresh, Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter-guitarist, whether it's with her current masterpiece (no exaggeration) The Real Thing, her acclaimed live underground release Peach Live! (2002), which won her a coveted distribution deal with Morada Music, or her first recording, the EP The Cure for You (2001), then it doesn't matter that you're coming to the party a little late. As long as you're here... The prestigious L.A. Music Awards have been dialed in to Peach from the not-so-long-ago beginning, naming her Blues Artist of the Year in 2001. Noting the Anderson, Indiana native's consistent quality as a musician and performer, this music industry arbiter of talent followed it up with an Award of Excellence in 2002. But the L.A. Music Awards wasn't the only one to give credit where it's due. With no artificial anything, The Real Thing is a historical record, sounding the return of the lost art of music with an unmitigated who's-who of blues and jazz players showing up to back Peach on this truly spectacular collection of songs produced by Marty Grebb (The Band, Bonnie Raitt, Etta James). She duets with Taj Mahal on the title track, and serenades "Beyond My Wildest Dream," backed by Reggie McBride (Tony Bennett, Keb' Mo') on upright bass, whom she admiringly calls "the Mack truck of bass." There's The Band's Garth Hudson (keys, sax, accordion); James Gadson (The Temptations, Beck) and Gary Mallaber (Van Morrison, Bruce Springsteen) on drums; Peach's own drummer/percussionist Maria Martinez (Barry White); baritone sax player Cece Worrall Rubin (Diana Ross, Guns n' Roses); Paul Barrére (Little Feat), Jon Woodhead (Leon Russell), and Rick Vito (Fleetwood Mac) all on slide; guitarist Amos Garrett (Stevie Wonder, Maria Muldaur), "the world's most bendy-note guy," according to Peach; and horn arrangement by Lee Thornburg (The Tonight Show Band, Tower of Power) on "Someone Else is Steppin' In." The list is long on power players, but to Peach, what really mattered was who was right for each of the lucky 13 tracks, half which she wrote, including the gorgeous ballad, "The Cure for You," featuring a sax solo by smooth jazz superstar Mindi Abair. The balance were written by the likes of Bobby Charles, who says he adores her rendering of his 1972 classic "I Must Be in a Good Place Now"; Danny Timms and Jodi Siegel, who penned the Triple A radio emphasis track, the sultry "Come Up and See Me Sometime"; and Jerry Lynn Williams (Eric Clapton) and Grebb, who conceived "Beyond My Wildest Dream." "They're songs that I dug up by local songwriters that I thought were incredibly great pieces of music," explains the former University of Denver voice major, whose accompanist was Condoleezza Rice, who left the piano for politics as National Security Adviser. "It's all pretty sexy music, but it's also really real." A tireless philanthropist, Peach is the co-founder of Rock 'n Cure, an annual event she produces and performs in to benefit Cedars-Sinai Medical Center's breast cancer and stem cell transplant research. The organization's 2003 flagship concert format fundraiser, which Peach headlined with special guests The Delgado Brothers at the House of Blues in Los Angeles raised $78,000 -- not bad for a first run production. Just as Rice didn't know at that time that she was destined for The White House ("She was on her way to being a great starving musician," Peach laughs), Peach didn't know she was a blues player. But the real thing always shines through. He has recorded 14 albums with Dr. Lateef including their large ensemble collaborations: "The World at Peace" (1995), "Beyond the Sky" (2000) and 2003's "In The Garden" with Rudolph conducting his Go: Organic Orchestra. He has performed worldwide with Dr. Lateef in ensembles ranging from their acclaimed duo concerts to appearing as guest soloist with Koln, Atlanta and Detroit symphony orchestras. Since the 1970's Rudolph has been developing his unique syncretic approach to hand drums in creative collaborations with many masters of cross-cultural and improvised music such as Sam Rivers, Pharaoh Sanders, L. Shankar, and Fred Anderson. He is known especially for his innovative small group and duo collaborations with Don Cherry, Jon Hassel, Wadada Leo Smith, and Omar Sosa. Since1992 Rudolph has lead his own performing ensemble, Adam Rudolph's Moving Pictures, featuring drummer Hamid Drake, Ralph Jones, and Venice based Butoh dance innovator Oguri. The group has performed in both Europe and the United States, and has released several CD's featuring Rudolph's compositions. MARIA JACOBS AT HEN HOUSE STUDIOS HenHouseStudios.com Raised in a musical family out of Cleveland, Ohio, Maria has always been surrounded by diversity in music that reached far beyond what could be found in record stores. From the tender age of six, she has sung in her church choir where eastern melodies and percussion were heard from the Melkite Catholic Mass. In the fourth grade Maria began fifteen years of classical flute study and some piano, gaining a new appreciation for European melody and harmony through much practice and listening. Her first encounters with live music were with her father Mike Jacobs, a drummer who frequently brought Maria to the bandstand to render her interpretations of favorite standards on which she was raised. All of these rich, early experiences lead to superior ratings in flute competitions throughout high school, a music scholarship at The Ohio State University and singing jazz in area night clubs. Maria has jammed with many great musicians including Grover Washington Jr. and Nancy Wilson. She has opened for Bob Dorough and recorded with bassist Alphonso Johnson and drummer Ndugu Chancler, both formerly of Weather Report. Upon graduating from college with a degree in Journalism, Maria started working with several jazz radio stations as a disc jockey, but it was in Cleveland that she met up with friend and mentor Bobby Jackson, three-time Gavin Radio Person of the Year. The musical director of then 24-hour jazz station WCPN hired her as his research assistant. It was here that she realized she would forever be a student of music, absorbing all she could from her various surroundings. In 1997, Maria moved to Los Angeles, CA upon the coaxing of Alphonso Johnson, who also encouraged her to fulfill her musical journey. He introduced her to JVC recording artist Kevyn Lettau, with whom she studied privately for three years, and later followed to the Los Angeles Music Academy for more group study in vocal improvisation and technique. Other musicians Maria has worked with include Bob Conti, Tony Dumas, Ralph Penland, Greg Poree, George Gaffney, Tom Garvin, Earl Palmer, Ernie McDaniel, Richard Sherman, Geoffrey Aymar, Sherry Luchetti, Greg Bandy, Paul Kreibech and Wilford Middlebrooks. She has participated in master classes of some the finest vocalists in the business including: Betty Carter, Diane Reeves, Jay Clayton, Kitty Margolis, Ellen Johnson, Suzanne Pittson and Cathy Segal-Garcia. Maria is a professional member of the Jazz Vocal Coalition and the International Association of Jazz Educators. She currently teaches private flute and voice at the AMUSE Music Center in Palos Verdes, and attends Chapman University for Music Therapy. She sings professionally throughout Los Angeles, New York and Cleveland, and is featured singing in the film "Made Up," directed by Tony Shalhoub, and starring Brooke Adams and Gary Sinise.
