John McCain on Health Care and Health Insurance Sen. John McCain talks about workers needing health care, and his ideas on what the government should and shouldn't do. This interview took place on October 12, 2007, at Iowa Public Television. http://www.iptv.org/campaign08 Henderson: Do you have a solution for what ails the country when it comes to health care and the rising cost of insurance? McCain: Choice and competition, affordability and availability, and not a big-government solution. We have to change the incentives. We have to have malpractice reform. We have to have portability of health insurance that people can keep. We have to have result-oriented health care. Now we pay practitioners for every procedure. If someone has a chronic disease, we should -- we should, which is 75 percent of health care costs, we should pay them by the year and by the result of their care as opposed to each procedure that they went through. I picked up the Des Moines Register this morning and see across the headline about the brewing scandal concerning the pharmaceutical companies. That's because there's no transparency. Why didn't we know? Why didn't we know it? Because this information is not available. There's a long list of things that we need to -- steps that we need to take. But I'm against a single-payer, big-government solution. Take a trip up to Canada or England if you think that that works. Borg: What would you do first in health care? Or it would be one big, comprehensive package. But what needs doing first? McCain: I'm not -- it's a series of steps but if I had to say one thing first, I would say health insurance companies have to be able to reward wellness and fitness. If you look at 75 percent of the health care costs in America are to five chronic diseases, wellness and fitness is a very important item. I would also say malpractice or reform is something that needs to be done, and I would also stress this portability of health insurance. Today people are scared to do death about losing their job, which is compounded by their ability to keep their health insurance. They lose that employer contribution, as you know, and have to make it up for themselves. They're out of a job. So we ought to give them a minimum health care insurance policy so that at least they're protected from catastrophic or serious medical requirements as they are moving from one job to another. The change in the information technology revolution is the movement of jobs. People in Michigan -- those folks in Michigan last night, their parents went to work for the automobile company, they stayed there for thirty years, they got a retirement, a pension, and health insurance. Now, obviously, we know of the churning. Seventy-three workers -- 73,000 workers went on strike for a day or two for general motors. Do you know that that work force was 400,000 not that many years ago? This is a period of monumental change. We've got to give people confidence, and we've got to give them some belief that their future will be secure. Tags: IPTV IowaPublicTelevision IowaPress John McCain campaign08 health care insurance |

Mitt Romney: Meet and Greet/Media Availability 01/17/08 Mitt Romney Media Availability/Meet and Greet Henderson, NV 01/17/08 TRANSCRIPT: QUESTIONER: What do you feel the most important issue to Nevada is? MITT ROMNEY: Well as I talk to people in Nevada, I hear the same message Ive heard across the country, and that is Washington is broken, Washington has not dealt with the problems that Nevadans feel, of a concern to them. And there are a whole raft of questions. One is of course, health care. People want to make sure they dont have to worry about losing their health insurance, and Im the only person who not just talks about health care, but actually found a way to get all citizens on track to have health insurance. Number one concern, I think, right now in Nevada is the economy. Whats happening to housing, whats happening to the overall economy, can we get the economy back on track on a short term basis and long term, to make sure we have a bright economic future? So Ill be talking about those issues, as well as of course, the threat that we face from global jihad extremists. People are always concerned about Homeland Security. And then let me mention, of course, with immigration. Nevadans feel the burden of illegal immigration more than the average state in the country. They want to see an end to illegal immigration, at the same time recognize that legal immigration is a great source of economic strength. We need legal immigrants to help our economy along. But they want to see an end to illegal immigration, and Im speaking to all those messages, and I think for instance, on illegal immigration, as they look at someone like Senator McCain, theyll remember that he was the one who stood up and championed a compromise legislation in the Senate that would have provided all illegal aliens, other than those who committed crimes, to stay here in this country for the rest of their lives. And many have called that amnesty, I think its a major mistake to pursue that kind of policy. I think thats why Im getting as much warmth as I am in Nevada, is that I address those issues people care about in the state of Nevada. QUESTIONER 2: Why should you think, though, that the Hispanic community should vote for you instead of other candidates? ROMNEY: Hispanic voters should vote for me because I can keep America strong, I can make sure we have great schools, great health care for all our citizens. Everywhere I go, Hispanic voters are very concerned about their quality of health care and the availability of affordable insurance for every citizen. And I got the job done in Massachusetts, everybody else is just talking about it. And Hispanic voters also value legal immigration, but the great majority agree with me, we need to stop illegal immigration and enforce our border. Spring, Beautiful Spring WALTZ (Paul Lincke) Nat.Shilkret (Nathaniel) 78 RPM Spring, Beautiful Spring WALTZ (Paul Lincke) Nat.Shilkret (Nathaniel) 78 RPM Part1-1 Paul Lincke (November 7, 1866 September 4, 1946) was a German composer. His march Berliner Luft ("Berlin Air") is the hymn of Berlin. The march Berliner Luft comes from Lincke's 1899 operetta Frau Luna about a trip to the moon in a hot air balloon, where an adventurous party of prominent Berliners meet Frau Luna and her court. Other Lincke operettas include Im Reiche des Indra (In the Kingdom of Indra) and Lysistrata. (The latter includes the song "Glühwürmchen," translated and arranged in the 1940s by Johnny Mercer as "Glow Little Glow Worm" and performed by the Mills Brothers among others.) He also composed the piece wedding dance played in Titanic 1998 version which is played while the ship is going down and in the dining room in earlier scenes http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Lincke Part2-2 He composed and arranged thousands of pieces. His best-known popular composition was The Lonesome Road, first sung by Gene Austin and later by Jules Bledsoe (dubbing Stepin Fetchit) in the final scene of the 1929 part-talkie film version of Show Boat and recorded by more than one hundred artists, including Louis Armstrong, Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra and Paul Robeson. His composition Jeannine, I Dream of Lilac Time sold almost two million copies of sheet music and was also recorded by over a hundred top artists, including Louis Armstrong, Skitch Henderson, Guy Lombardo, The London Philharmonic Orchestra, John McCormack, Mitch Miller, Hugo Montenegro, The Platters, and Lawrence Welk. His composition Concerto for Trombone was premiered in 1945 by Tommy Dorsey, playing with the New York Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Leopold Stokowski. The piece was unavailable to the public from the mid-1950s until Scottish trombonist Bryan Free rescued it from anonymity in the beginning of this century. It was re-premiered at Carnegie Hall by the New York Pops, under the direction of Skitch Henderson, with Jim Pugh as soloist. Since its revival, the Concerto for Trombone has been performed about forty times (with more performances scheduled) in the United States, Canada and several European countries. Shilkret moved to Los Angeles in 1935 and there contributed music scores and musical direction for a string of Hollywood films for RKO (as musical director from 1935--1937) and MGM (as a musical director from 1942--1946). His films included Mary of Scotland (1936), Swing Time (1936), The Plough and the Stars, and Shall We Dance? (1937) and several films of Laurel and Hardy. He also received an Oscar nomination for his work scoring the film version of Maxwell Anderson's stage drama Winterset (1936). In 1939, he conducted a group of soloists (including tenor Jan Peerce) and the Victor Symphony Orchestra for RCA Victor's multi-disc tribute to Victor Herbert, which were recorded following a special NBC radio broadcast, and he recorded a number of other albums in 1939 and 1940. Due to a serious abdominal operation for cancer removal, he did not conduct for most of 1941. He worked at RKO-Pathe, making short films from 1946 through the mid-1950s. He was the pit orchestra conductor for the Broadway show Paris '90 in 1952. He lived in his son's home in Franklin Square, NY, from the mid-1950s until his death in 1982. He was part of a very musically inclined family. His father played almost every insrument, and made certain that Nat and his three brothers were all accomplished musicians at an early age. Older brother Lew Shilkret was a fine pianist, but also worked in the insurance industry. Younger brother Jack Shilkret has a career that paralleled Nathaniel's career: he played clarinet and piano, recorded extensively, and conducted and played piano on the radio and in motion pictures. The youngest brother Harry Shilkret was a medical doctor, who worked his way through school playing trumpet, and continued to play trumpet frequently in Nathaniel's orchestras, particularly for radio broadcasts, long after he was a practicing allergist. Nathaniel Shilkret's brother-in-law, Nathaniel Finston, was violinist in many organizations in his youth and was musical director for Paramount and later for MGM, at one time being Nathaniel Shilkret's boss.
