Henryk Górecki - Lento e Largo - Tranquillissimo Symphony No. 3, Op. 36, also known as the Symphony of Sorrowful Songs (Polish: Symfonia pieśni żałosnych), is a symphony in three movements composed by Henryk Górecki in Katowice, Poland, between October and December 1976. The work is indicative of the transition between Górecki's dissonant earlier manner and his more tonal later style. A solo soprano sings a different Polish text in each of the three movements. The first is a 15th-century Polish lament of Mary, mother of Jesus, the second a message written on the wall of a Gestapo cell during World War II, and the third a Silesian folk song of mother searching for son killed in the Silesian uprisings. The first and third movements are written from the perspective of a parent who has lost a child, and the second movement from that of a child separated from a parent. The dominant themes of the symphony are motherhood and separation through war. Until 1992, Górecki was known only to connoisseurs, primarily as one of several composers responsible for the postwar Polish music renaissance. That year, Elektra-Nonesuch released a recording of the 15-year-old symphony that topped the classical charts in Britain and the United States. It has now sold more than a million copies, vastly exceeding the expected lifetime sales of a typical symphonic recording by a 20th-century composer. This success, however, has failed to generate interest in Górecki's other works. Symphony No. 3 is constructed around simple harmonies, set in a neo-modal style which makes use of the medieval musical modes, but does not adhere strictly to medieval rules of composition. The symphony is written for solo soprano, four flutes—two players doubling on piccolo—four clarinets, two bassoons, two contrabassoons, four horns, four trombones, harp, piano and strings. Performances typically last about 50 minutes. The musicologist Adrian Thomas notes that the symphony lacks dissonance outside of modal inflections (that is, occasional use of pitches that fall outside the mode), and that it does not require nonstandard techniques or virtuosic playing. Thomas further observes that "there is no second-hand stylistic referencing, although if predecessors were to be sought they might be found, distantly removed, in the music of composers as varied as Bach, Schubert, Tchaikovsky, and even Debussy."Ronald Blum describes the symphony as "mournful, like Mahler, but without the bombast of percussion, horns and choir, just the sorrow of strings and the lone soprano".The work consists of three elegiac movements, each marked Lento to indicate their slow tempi.Strings dominate the musical textures and the music is rarely loud—the dynamics reach fortissimo in only a few bars. Lento e largo—Tranquillissimo The nine-minute second movement is for soprano, clarinets, horns, piano and strings, and contains a libretto formed from the prayer to the Virgin Mary inscribed by Blazusiakówna on the cell wall in Zakopane.According to the composer, "I wanted the second movement to be of a highland character, not in the sense of pure folklore, but the climate of Podhale ... I wanted the girl's monologue as if hummed ... on the one hand almost unreal, on the other towering over the orchestra."The movement opens with a folk drone, A--E, and a melodic fragment, E--G♯--F♯, which alternate with sudden plunges to a low B♭--D♭ dyad. Thomas describes the effect as "almost cinematic ... suggest[ing] the bright open air of the mountains". As the soprano begins to sing, her words are supported by the orchestra until she reaches a climaxing top A♭. The movement is resolved when the strings hold a chord without diminuendo for just over two minutes. The final words of the movement are the first two lines of the Polish Ave Maria, sung twice on a repeated pitch by the soprano. Second Movement No, Mother, do not weep, Most chaste Queen of Heaven Support me always. "Zdrowas Mario." Adam Aston sings Henryk Wars - Panie Janie, 1938 „Panie Janie" (Mister John!) is one of three great hit songs from „Zapomniana melodia" („A Forgotten Tune") -- which was one of the last musical comedies in pre-war Poland (1938). The music was composed by Henryk Wars as a free jazzy evaluation of the popular European children song „Frère Jacques": Frère Jacques. Frère Jacques, (bis) Dormez-vous ? (bis) Sonnez les matines, (bis) Ding, ding, dong ! (bis). Adam Aston sings in Polish: Panie Janie! Panie Janie! Niech pan wstanie (bis) Tylko lenie Jeszcze spią Wszystkie dzwony bija bim-bam-bom - which translates in English: Mister John, Mister John, wake up, wake up! Only the lazy bones are still asleep, when all the bells are ringing, bim-bam-bom. In the movie the song is sung by Helena Grossówna, Jadwiga Andrzejewska and the student girls chorus, just before the boring music class they all are waiting to attend. The dance scene - performed by Helena Grossówna, as a witty parody of the famous choreography from the movie „Varsity Drag"- can be seen on You Tube (piszczyk90 Polish pre-war movie clip collection). Symphony of Sorrowful Songs - Henryk Górecki - 1st movement Lento—Sostenuto tranquillo ma cantabile (only the second part of the 1st movement) Typically 27 minutes in duration, the first movement equals the combined length of the second and third movements,[9] and is based on a late-15th century lament of Mary from the Lysagora Songs collection of the Holy Cross Monastery in the Świętokrzyskie Mountains. Comprising three thematic sections, the movement opens with a canon in ten parts using a 24-bar melody in the Aeolian mode on E. It begins with double basses, and each succeeding entry occurs one measure later (i.e., a new entry begins every 25 measures), starting a fifth above the last. After the canon reaches a full 10 parts, it works its way back to a single pitch. The soprano enters in the second section and builds to a climax on the final word, at which point the strings enter forcefully with the climax of the opening canon. The third section of the movement (Lento—Cantabile semplice) is a long dénouement that also winds down to a single pitch. Tags: górecki |

Henryk Wars' tango - Zapomnisz o mnie, 1929 Tadeusz Faliszewski - Zapomnisz o mnie (You'll Forget Me) (Muz. Henryk Wars/ Tekst Andrzej Włast)Tango z rewii "1000 pięknych dziewcząt" (1000 Beautiful Girls), Syrena Electro 1929 ------------------------------ NOTE: Henryk WARS (né Warszawski) (b. in Warsaw, 1902 d. in LA, California, 1977) composed music for 50 films in the interwar period in Poland, and another 60, after WWII, in USA. He also compsed dozens of hit songs for the revue-theatres and films: „Miłość ci wszystko wybaczy" (Love Will Forgive You Everything) sung by Hanka Ordonówna , „Umówiłem się z nią na dziewiątą" (I Hale A Date With Her At Nine) and „Sex Appeal" sung by Eugeniusz Bodo, „Ach, jak przyjemnie (Ah, How Lovely!) and „Już nie zapomnisz mnie" (Now, You Will Remember Me) sung by Aleksander Żabczyński. In 1925 he completed studies of composition and conducting at Warsaw Conservatory. Two years later he composed „New York Times, sung in the theatre „Karuzela" (Merry-Go-Round) by Tadeusz Olsza („I do nothing all day but reading New York Times") and recorded by Henryk Gold's Orchestra for „Syrena Rekord". The song never became a hit, though, and Wars had to wait a little longer for the fame - which came with the hit „Zatańczmy tango" (Let's Dance a Tango) he composed in 1928 for the duett Stanisława Nowicka and Eugeniusz Bodo. He was employed then in the theatre „Perskie Oko" as a pianist, he also joined Henryk Golds band. In the same year he was offered a lucrative job as artistic director of „Syrena-Electro" record company and he kept it until 1935, when he was displaced by Iwo Wesby. In 1929 he organised a revellers band Chór Warsa, recording exclusively for Syrena Elektro and a year later, another one „Weseli Chłopcy z Columbii" (Happy Columbia Lads), who recorded for Columbia. In 1930 he composed music for the hit movie „Na Sybir" (To Syberia), with a beautiful evergreen English waltz „Płomienne serca" (The Flaming Hearts, see: http://pl.youtube.com/watch?v=i0n-o2GSToY). The premiere of that one-of-first Polish talkies took place at the Castle of Warsaw, in the presence of the President of Poland, Ignacy Mościcki. In later years Wars recorded dozens of tangos, foxtrotts for the theatres „Morskie Oko „Hollywood , „Wielka Rewia, he wrote music for most popular films: „Paweł i Gaweł", "Szpieg w masce" (A Masked Spy), „Piętro wyżej" (Upstairs), „Zapomniana melodia" (A Forgotten Tune) and he was a pioneer of the swing music in Poland. He had a huge apartament in Aleje Jerozolimskie with famous two pianos in his studio: one black, and one white, where he used to arrange rehearsals with artists, he wrote his music for. His orchestra recordings for „Syrena" show us his unusual class and size of his talent; in the conoisseurs' opinion, many of Henryk Wars Orchestra's renditions of international dance hits („Let Yourself Go", „Lets Face The Music And Dance") are better than originals. In August 1939 he was mobilised and he fought the German invaders in the September Campaign, until the capitulation. Captured by the Wehrmacht, he managed to flee from the transport and he got to the Soviet occupation zone. In 1940 Lwow he arranged the huge (61 persons!) Polish artistic band, with such famous pre-war stars like Eugeniusz Bodo, Adam Aston or Albert Harris. They gave hundreds of concerts throughout the USSR, until June 1941 when the Soviet-German war broke out. Wars immediately gave up his artistical tournee and managed to join Polish emigree army, formed by General Anders first in Kazachstan and later after the international scandal caused by uncovering of the mass graves of the Polish officers murdered by Soviets in Katyn the Army was lead out by Anders from the "Soviet paradise" to Persia. With the Polish Army in the West, Henryk Wars marched via Palestine, North Africa to Italy) directing the artistic group „Czołówka (The Forefont. In 1944, for his activity and devotion, he was decorated with the Silver Cross of Virtue. After the war he emigrated to USA where, after many years of anonimity, in 1954 he finally managed to bind his fate with the Hollywood film producers. He wrote music for Universal Pictures, Warner Bros and 20th Century Fox: „The Big Heat with Glenn Ford, „China Doll, „The Phoenix City Story or „Flipper (followed by the TV series „Flippers New Adventures) and some of his songs became international hits (e.g. „Sleep, My Child and „Oper And Oper sung by Margaret Witting). He also wrote symphonic music and his jazz-suite „Manhattan Impression was preesented in the Warsaw Symphony Hall, under Wars personal direction. Symphony of Sorrowful Songs - Henryk Górecki - 3st movement Lento e largo—Tranquillissimo (only the second part of the 3st movement) The tempo of the third movement is not as slow as the previous two, and subtle changes in dynamism and mode make it more complex and involving than it may at first appear. It comprises three verses in A minor[1] and, like the first movement, is constructed from evolving variations on a simple motif. The melody is established in the opening verse, and the second and third verses revisit the cradling motifs of the second movement. As in the second movement, the motifs are built up from inversions of plain triads and seventh chords stretching across several octaves. As the soprano sings the final words, the key changes to a pure diatonic A major which accompanies, in writer David Ellis's words, the "ecstatic final stanza":[1] O sing for him / God's little song-birds / Since his mother cannot find him. And you, God's little flowers / May you blossom all around / that my son may a sleep happy sleep.[16] Tags: górecki |
