Alexander/Hephaistion ~ King Without A Castle [MV] If I can be metaphorical here... Alexander's dream was a castle ambition built, the skeletal material (pillars etc) we're his men, the pipes perhaps Hephaestion but I fear the foundation was never properly laid so the castle crumbled prematurely. However fascinating it may be, I do believe Alexander's rationale may, in part, have attributed to his detriment. Alexander's turbulent relationship with his parents (both Olympias and Philip vying for his liege) might have launched him into an adulthood of ambivalence. I am of the opinion that his sense of belonging was not fixed, such that he may have been a "man condemned to roam" in constant search for what one affectionately calls 'home' in every sense of the word, as the lyrics imply. Incidentally he may have lacked the psychological criteria to be content, no matter how vast his explorations. His destination was a moving target, an infinite world of conquest, gain, loss, edification and redemption. Working from the compass of heart and ego combined can sometimes be a recipe for disaster if there is no objective end to aspiration. No doubt Alexander died early in life because he did not process temperance with consequence, there was very little balance. He lived every day to it's fullest, maximizing his energy and potential, stretching both mental and physical muscle -his being, his appetites- to the point of collapse. Though Alexander's resources could have sustained him well into his life, the same might not be said of his entire ever changing empire. Insatiability and charisma combined were Alexander's greatest assets, he used both to dominate beyond physical realms, his empire extended into the minds of his men and his people, garnering love and loyalty very few Kings experience. However, his limitless desires far exceeded his means and later proved to alienate once unquestionable allegiances, with too much vacillating for replenishing. Along the way Alexander blazed a monumental trail, one few of us will ever come close to rivaling or even understanding. The man helped plant the roots of civilization, it's only because of people like Oliver Stone who see through a very human prism that such a figurehead can translate as touchable. Otherwise, legend is the only thing that owns Alexander like a home would. I centered the video around Alexander's most intimate relationships (as portrayed by Oliver Stone), ranging from his childhood love Hephaestion to his Bactrian bride Roxane. Focus begins with his death backwards, so that one may greater understand how his emotional life may have progressively unraveled; what ties held fast to their binds during epochal events, which did not etc... but I can't lie, I am totally AlexanderXHephaestion biased. Eternal Lovers - Alexander and Hephaistion This is NO statement if Alexander the Great was actually gay or not! This is merely a fanvideo the film by Oliver Stone which has a very strong homosexual subtext. I had to use footage I found on a fan page nearly 2 years ago. I can't even recall where... I cut it together to focus on Alex and Hephi and used Titans from the OST as BG music. Nothing too spectacular, it was my first fan vid, I think... Oh how I wished for a kiss between the two. Alexander/Hephaistion---Everything Finally, months after coming up with the idea for this video and having many "technical difficulties", I've posted it! I just love the feeling I get whenever I listen to this song and thought it fit perfectly with Alexander and Hephaistion's relationship. The video starts off in Hephaistion's POV as he's dying, he's just thinking how happy he is to spend his last moments with Alexander and how Alexander is all he ever needed. The POV then switches to Alexander who only then realizes just how important Hephaistion is to him and how he was all Alexander needed to keep him going. Once Hephaistion dies, he is all Alexander can think about and he is haunted all the time until he decides to follow in Hephaistion's path and finally finds him again. The sepia tone represents the time in which Hephaistion is dying which turns to black and white that is present once Hephaistion is dead and Alexander is left alone. All the scenes in colour represent the memories of the times they had together while they were alive. The song is Everything by Lifehouse. Please comment and rate! I truly value their history as if it were my own and wanted to do them honor. I finally decided on Rammstein's Stirb Nicht Vor Mir (Don't Die Before I Do). I felt it captured a dynamic I am sure was ever present; the fear of losing love to death and living more vigorously as a result of it. Ah, most beautiful irony, the thought of death is like a fire under one's feet, the smoke of it coiling around the soul and suddenly you're desperate to jump up and breathe life in. It pushes you on, makes you aware of time, space, others and what spirit still crawls inside you. The line between life and death was blurred for both men, I'm sure, to carry out such a grand dream much sacrifice had to have been made and the risks were endless. I gather they chased brilliantly, sometimes so quickly they felt like they left death to the dust. Sadly, it always has a way of finding us all... doesn't it? It's that force that knows your weaknesses before you even do; that cruel pendulum swing that cuts your moves short. But it hasn't any design fit to dismantle love. Although Alexander was known to sail through political/military regimes etc I imagine the thought of his general's -especially Hephaestion's- safety was fixed at the front of his mind and proved to be a far greater enemy than all else he was up against. It could have been a handicap but (history shows) somehow what they had was strong enough not to allow it (up until Hephaestion's premature demise that is. :[) Though Hephaestion passed before Alexander I believe the thread that connected them was eternal, made from the rarest of fabrics that not even death could cut. Perhaps after death they became the strongest they had ever been because their star of inspiration is still shining bright enough for us all to see... I tried to arrange the scenes chronologically but strayed a few times when clips coincided better with the lyrics/theme. I hope through this video it's evident how deep the bond was (at least in mine and Oliver Stone's opinion) and how much they fought to keep it that way.
