Herbie's Pizza Party Von Cello, the world famous rock cello pioneer, started out in music as a rock guitarist! In fact, he was already semi-famous as a lead guitarist and singer/songwriter before he ever took a cello lesson (in his last year of high school). He went on to become a professional classical cellist before returning to the world of rock. Yet many people did not believe him when he said he was not just another classical cellist trying to play rock, but was instead a rock guitarist who crossed over to classical and then came back! This video speaks for itself! When Von Cello was still known as Aaron Minsky he used to "hang out" at the bleachers by the football field of South Shore High School. One night his friends Perry and Steve showed up with a six pack of beer and a guitar. Aaron and Perry started jamming and somehow created a song on the spot about a mythical childhood friend named Herbie. When they were kids, it was popular to have birthday parties at the local pizza shop. They were known as Pizza Parties. Maybe it was the beer, maybe it was the moon, but out of nowhere the three friends composed, "Herbie's Pizza Party". Fast forward about ten years. Aaron is now a professional cellist and Perry is a middle manager for a technology company. The two have not seen each other since high school when Aaron visits Perry, his wife, daughter, and brother in law. They start to jam and Perry's wife turns on the video camera. Suddenly Perry says, "I'm so used to going into Herbie". And Aaron says, "Let's do a Herbies for posterity". Then he asks Perry's brother in law, Rich, to do the background vocals (like Steve did in the original). In a most uncanny way, Aaron and Perry manage to totally recreate the original "Herbie's Pizza Party" having only played it once, ten years earlier! Aaron went on to form Von Cello, the first cello fronted rock power trio in history. Perry went on to play guitar in several bands, performing with former members of the Grateful Dead and other groups. How many "rock cellists" have such evidence of their rock n' roll pasts? Sun Touch - Herbie Hancock/Paul Jackson, bass I got in a quick take of this before a student came by; I think it's Paul Jackson, but I know that Louis Johnson also played on this album. If anyone knows for sure, please let me know! Whoever it was, we can all learn a little from his subtlety on this track. It may seem repetitive, but there's more going on than you think form-wise. I still don't totally understand this tune's structure - again, if someone has some insight, please give it. This is from the album "Man-Child" - my personal favorite of Herbie's funk albums.
