Herman's Hermits starring Peter Noone was number four on our summer concert agenda. We are huge fans of the British Invasion of the 1960s. However, even if we were not, we would still love Mr. Noone immensely. He is such a great showman and going to his concerts have become a yearly event for my family. If fact, we are actually card-carrying members of his fan club. We were able to see the show right on the beach at the historic Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. What a fun and memorable experience. The city of Santa Cruz really goes all out to attract tourism. Definitely, go see Peter Noone's show. He is funny, friendly, and genuinely personable. Mr. Noone is a true gentleman. We were amazed at how many teens and young adults seemed familiar with this music. Everyone, young and old, sang along, danced, and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Also, catch the free Friday night oldies concerts held at the Boardwalk. These shows have great acts, are very family orientated, and did I mention they are free of charge. You will have to wait in line for a good seat. We arrived at 11:15 am for a 6:30 pm show and still had over 20 people ahead of us. This was a gigantic crowd. But great extras like allowing ice-chests and low lawn-chars, as well as, two different autograph sessions, make this a must-revisit venue. FMD Check out the free summer band line-up. Herman's Hermits - I'll Never Dance Again One of their best hits in the 60'. Herman's Hermits were an English rock band in the 1960s, formed in Manchester in 1963. Part of the British Invasion, their trademark simple, non-threatening and clean-cut "boys next door" image made them easier to listen to and more accessible than other British Invasion bands. The band originally performed R&B numbers along with American pop. After settling on the Noone, Leckenby, Hopwood, Green and Whitwam lineup they secured a recording deal. Producer Mickie Most controlled the band's output and pressed for a straight ahead pop sound. Popular myth is that the Hermits didn't play on their records despite being competent musicians. Like most things this is only partly true. The Hermits did in fact play on all the number one hits and many other singles together with most album cuts. This can be confirmed from Most's comments on the VH-1 My Generation episode featuring the band. Mickie Most did use session musicians on many of the records he produced, including on a number of Hermits singles, as was his (and for that matter industry) practice at the time, a practice that continues today. Acrimony between former members has increased the misinformation about the bands role on their records. Further, because the band was allowed for the most part only to record straight ahead pop many critics dismiss them. For a brief time the band rivaled the Beatles on the charts and was the top selling pop act in the U.S. in 1965 (See Billboard Charts for verification). When Derek Leckenby passed away in the early '90s rock music lost a gifted and underrated player. Peter Noone and Barry Whitwam continue to perform, but separately. Hopwood is a successful writer and producer mainly scoring children's television shows in Britain and releasing the occasional rare recording from his days with the Hermits and thereafter. No Milk Today - Herman's Hermits (1967) In an interview with the "Forgotten Hits" newsletter, Hermit's lead singer Peter Noone said: "Personally I think 'No Milk Today' is Herman's Hermits' best recording, and perfectly captures the moment and the feel of Manchester terraced houses and what was the end of a British era. I recall it was made at Lansdown Studios and that we recorded a few other songs that day, probably 'There's A Kind Of Hush,' 'Dandy' and 'No Milk Today.' This was in the period where we (Mick and I) had just stopped using The Hermits on the recordings and were using the best musicians available to us to try to keep up with what had suddenly become The British Invasion. We were supposed to deliver 48 tracks a year to MGM so we were always scrambling to catch up. I recall that John Paul Jones played bass guitars (an upright and a fender bass) on the tracks and was also responsible for the arrangements which I dare say are brilliant on all 3 tracks but I know he liked 'No Milk Today' and I would suggest that his arrangement turned this perfect Graham Gouldman song into a hit. I think that after we had the tracks down then I did the lead vocal and then Karl Green, Keith Hopwood and I did the backgrounds, the songs were mixed and that was it." The song was released in 1967 on the B-side of Herman's Hermits cover of The Kinks' "Dandy". Written by future 10cc member Graham Gouldman, "No Milk Today" was Herman's Hermit's first single to employ an orchestra. The song made it to #35 on the charts in the U.S., and #7 on the U.K. charts.
