Jim Hession plays King Porter Stomp by Jelly Roll Morton http://www.artistopia.com/hessionsession An early Morton composition(1905)that achieved great commercial success over many decades, King Porter Stomp is most famous as a Morton piano solo and the Benny Goodman swing era big band arrangement. This piece was composed for Morton's good friend, Porter King. Jelly's style of "band Piano" was intended to make the solo piano, through voicings, riffs and breaks, simulate the sound of the entire band. This was the first JRM solo that Jim learned and surprisingly one that he has not recorded until now. Jim Hession / The Charleston /James P. Johnson /stride http://www.artistopia.com/hessionsession New piano CD's available as of April,2008 James P. Johnson, the father of stride piano, made history in 1923 by penning the quintessential pop tune and dance craze of the 1920's{better known as the "jazz age"}. Johnson, a student of Eubie Blake, followed Blake's 1921 "Shuffle Along" Broadway success with his own show, "Runnin' Wild". Here he utilizes the "Habenera" rhythm as the distinctive musical feature of the Charleston. This rendition leads off with a rubato treatment of the original verse. This piece was posted at the request of a YouTube viewer. Martha and I have done this as a piano/vocal feature in concerts for many years. This is a totally improvised rendition and stylistic elements of both Eubie Blake and James P. Johnson appeared as inevitable contributions to the mix. What a great addition to the stride repertoire for any two handed player! Tags: STRIDE Eubie Blake Charleston James P. Johnson stride solo jazz piano hession two-handed New Orleans |

Jim Hession / New Orleans Joys / Jelly Roll Morton http://www.artistopia.com/hessionsession Jim Hession plays one of the best examples of Jelly Roll Morton's "Spanish Tinge", incorporating the Habanera rhythm to alternate with the straight traditional jazz beat. Fans of New Orleans jazz piano will notice the similarity between this early Morton piece and the later styles of the post 1940's New Orleans players from Professor Longhair to Dr. John. Jim Hession /Puttin' on the Ritz/ Irving Berlin http://www.artistopia.com/hessionsession One thing that Jim has always enjoyed is taking music of the great American songbook era and improvising a piano solo that could extend anywhere from 5-20 plus choruses without repeating a musical idea. This cut was selected from two back-to-back takes that were completely different. An amusing idea was added at the end of this take when the recording engineer shouted:"Puttin' On the Ritz" in classic Peter Boyle style(as the monster) from Mel Brooks' "Young Frankenstein". Jim Hession plays Jelly Roll Morton's "Fingerwrecker" http://www.artistopia.com/hessionsession Jim Hession performs a rendition of Jelly Roll Morton's "Fingerwrecker" that he learned at age 16 from British jazz pianist Ron Weatherburn. Recorded at Fritzel's Jazz Pub, New Orleans French Quarter during the 2007 French Quarter Festival at the request of Austrian clarinetist Wolfgang Friedrich, who heard Jim perform the tune in Disneyland's French Quarter several years ago. The club on this particular night was standing room only, filled with musicians from across the world. This is the case many times a year as lovers of America's own music, jazz, flood into New Orleans to add Bourbon St. to their jazz credentials. Jim Hession / Jingles / James P. Johnson / stride http://www.artistopia.com/hessionsession New piano Cd's available as of April,2008 Back in the studio it was time to lay down some two-handed,stride piano solos. There are two basic goals in learning to play good stride piano: learning the mechanics of the style with particular attention to accuracy and developing the ability to improvise within the style and make it swing. After the initial statement of the trio theme in this cut, the rest is improvised. Several of you have contacted me about how to learn this style- first and foremost dig out recordings of the great stride players and listen with a critical ear. It also helps if you are well versed in music theory and harmony and have some classical training. Best of luck to all you aspiring stridists.....ROCK ON! Tags: STRIDE Jim Hession James P. Jim Hession/Little Rock Getaway/Joe Sullivan/Stride Piano http://www.artistopia.com/hessionsession New piano CD's available as of April,2008. Joe Sullivan's classic swing jazz piano solo, made even more famous by Bob Zurke featured with Bob Crosby and the Bobcats in the 1930's......while attending UCLA music school in 1969 Jim Hession, the pianist, worked regular gigs with Bob Crosby alumnus, guitarist Nappy LaMare. Nappy told Jim that he and Bob Zurke had so many requests for this tune that out of boredom they converted it to a jazz waltz-one of the first jazz waltzes. According to Joe Sullivan's widow who came to see Jim and Martha's performances in the 1990's, Sullivan dedicated this famous jazz classic to his "soon to be" wife who was in fact his "Little Rock Getaway". Jim Hession /Gravy Waltz/Ray Brown & Steve Allen/jazz waltz http://www.artistopia.com/hessionsession Gravy Waltz, co-written by legendary jazz bassist, Ray Brown and original Tonight Show host, Steve Allen, has been a jazz waltz favorite since the 1960's. Steve Allen was personally supportive of all up and coming jazz players... this included the Hessions. Over the years the LA Times had several features on the Hessions. After one rather nice article we arrived at a jazz club, where we had an ongoing engagement, to find a rather large package had arrived with our names on the label. We were very surprised to see Steve Allen's name and address as the sender. We were very grateful to find a large amount of CD's, tapes, manuscripts and sheet music which were written by Steve Allen and his various musical partners. We were absolutely blown away by the great music! Steve Allen also developed a jazz show for PBS. Some videos can be found on YouTube, one that I can think of is Oscar Brown introducing Phineas Newborn as well as several Miles Davis cuts from the 1964 Steve Allen show. One of our favorite Steve Allen stories involves "The Piano of MaryAnn Jackson". That is for another day. He first heard this on Morton's "King Of New Orleans Jazz" LP as well as "Turk Murphy and Wally Rose play Jelly Roll Morton". Both of these old LP's are well worth acquiring if you love Morton's music. The left hand percussive "smash" in section C represents "the spell" that Grandpa had. Jim Hession/Cold Duck Time/Eddie Harris http://www.artistopia.com/hessionsession Cold Duck Time by Eddie Harris is a quintessential jazz/funk/fusion composition made famous on the classic "Swiss Movement" album(1969) with Les McCann, Eddie Harris,LeRoy Vinnegar and Donald "the Duck" Dean. Harris wrote the piece for drummer Donald Dean who at the time was in his twenties, and who later was the featured drummer in many L.A. based jazz groups particularly Jim and Martha Hesssion's American Jazz Quintet (AJQ). Cold Duck Time was a popular feature of the AJQ during their 15 year run at Jax Jazz Club and Residuals Lounge in the L.A. Area from the 1980's through 2002. This studio recording is the first time Jim has played it as a piano solo. Raise your glasses to a giant moment in jazz. Thank you, Les McCann, Eddie Harris and Donald Dean!!!!!! Jim Hession /Mike Fulton/ Rosetta/ Earl Fatha Hines http://www.artistopia.com/hessionsession "Rosetta", one of the best known compositions by jazz piano pioneer, Earl "Fatha" Hines, is a spontaneous performance by Jim Hession and trumpeter Mike Fulton. "Fatha" Hines, an early protege of Eubie Blake, came to prominence in the late 1920's, recording duets with Louis Armstrong. Hines was the pioneer of "trumpet style" piano, with the right hand taking prominent leads with the left hand supporting with accented figures. Jim and Martha traded musical ideas with "Fatha" and Eubie at Hines' Michael's Pub gig in NYC following a Town Hall Concert with Jim and Eubie in 1974. It was later published in 1923 by Melrose and the Spikes Brothers, who added the word "blues" to the title, knowing that it would increase sales. Jim Hession /Shreveport Stomp /Jelly Roll Morton http://www.artistopia.com/hessionsession Certainly one of the most challenging of the Jelly Roll Morton repertoire is Shreveport Stomp. This was written for piano, but possibly the most famous rendition was by Morton(piano) with Omer Simeon(clarinet). Jim first played this piano solo at 15 years old for a citywide youth talent contest at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium. Jim Hession//The Pearls/Jelly Roll Morton http://www.artistopia.com/hessionsession By request,The Pearls by Jelly Roll Morton has been added. This JRM classic was written while Jelly was playing piano in the Kansas City Bar in Tijuana,Mexico, that sleepy little border town just to the south of San Diego, Calif. Jelly was drawn to Tijuana by the horse racing track which at the time was the only racetrack in the southwest. It would have been the summer of 1922 that he wrote this piano solo in honor of a very attractive waitress at the Kansas City Bar. This unique piece stands on its own among Morton's compositions. Jelly later arranged and recorded The Pearls in 1927 with his band, The Red Hot Peppers. Tags: stride New Orleans Jazz piano Jim Hession Eubie Blake Jelly Roll Morton Pearls Kansas City Bar |
