Nick Heyward - Whistle Down the Wind Haircut 100 seemed poised for mega-stardom just as Heyward decided to seek a solo career. The remainder of the band tried to continue with the album Paint and Paint (1984, with percussionist Marc Fox successfully taking over Heyward's vocal duties), but they broke up soon after. Nick Heyward has enjoyed a modestly successful solo career since leaving the band, beginning with the 1983 album North Of A Miracle, which produced Heyward's first solo hit, "Whistle Down The Wind", and continuing with Postcards From Home (1986) and the somewhat disjointed I Love You Avenue (1988). "Summertime, bellísima canción que forma parte de la ópera Porgy and Bess, y pertenece a una escena cargada de significado. Expresa el resentimiento de clase que acompaña al nacimiento de la conciencia de lo social: una pareja de negros intenta tranquilizar a su "amita" blanca, recordándole que la suya será una vida fácil porque ha nacido de padre "rico" y madre "bonita" y nunca le faltará nada porque siempre tendrá la protección de sus progenitores. Entonces, pequeña niña, "Don't you cry". Algo que podría traducirse en un criollo "de qué te quejás". Hay allí ya un reconocimiento, el primero que realiza nuestro caminante, de las diferencias sociales. Comienza a reconocerse como ser social al percibir la diferencia. Summertime se convirtió en un éxito musical por sí sola (igual que It Aint Necessarily So). La ópera nació de la labor conjunta de Ira y George Gershwin, sobre la base de una novela de un escritor negro, Heyward. Nunca fue un gran éxito en EE.UU., ni en el teatro ni en la versión para cine de Otto Preminger. Retrató fielmente un mundo en crisis, el de los '30s americanos, en los que las convulsiones sociales permitieron el desarrollo de un arte pleno de crítica social y el encuentro entre el arte popular y el "culto". Es el caso de la obra de Gershwin, que sintetiza el jazz y la tradición clásica. Summertime ha sido interpretada innumerables veces por los mejores cantantes del mundo, aunque tal vez la versión "clásica" sea la de Louis Armstrong y Ella Fitzgerald. Nina Simone, María Callas, Sara Vaughan, entre otras gigantes, han dado vida a exposiciones de belleza y energía incomparables. En esta versión los instrumentos van apareciendo a medida que la obra se desarrolla. La introducción fue compuesta sobre una variación libre de la melodía. El actor principal del tema es el clima dinámico y sorpresivo generado por el groove(10) a partir de su base rítmica, y los contracantos(11) a cargo del saxo soprano (a cargo de Bernardo Baraj) y la guitarra eléctrica. La modulación por tono ascendente(12) nos demuestra que algo cambió, que se produjo un quiebre: aquí se intenta mostrar al individuo en un grado de conciencia más elevado. Reconoce de alguna forma, aunque sea de manera incipiente, las relaciones sociales que constituyen su vida. El final del tema es interpretado por el saxo soprano y el resto de la banda juega rítmicamente empujando el tema hasta su fin." (10) Groove se traduce habitualmente como enrolle o vacilación (groovy significaría, por tanto, enrrollante o vacilante) y se utiliza para definir ritmos negros con una cadencia especial, que induce a bailar de forma sensual, moviendo las cabezas y los hombros, más que la cabeza o los pies. La música con "groove" suele ser muy cálida, frente a otros ritmos más duros, fríos y cerebrales. Ejemplos de música con "groove" serían el funk, el hip-hop, el soul, los ritmos africanos, el trip-hop, el nu-house o el drum&bass. (11) Contracantos son segundas melodías, que funcionan sobre la melodía principal. (12) Modulación un tono ascendente: la melodía no se modifica, conserva sus mismos intervalos, sólo se transporta un tono más agudo.
