B-17 "Aluminum Overcast" FLIGHT from Napa on 5/8/2007 Go to http://b17.org and fly B-17 'Aluminum Overcast!' Members of the national organization Experimental Aircraft Association [EAA] have reconditioned this B-17 Flying Fortress that tours North America every year out of Oshkosh, WI ...here visiting in Napa on May 8th and 9th 2007 from the Napa County Airport, California, USA. The challenge during take-off [due to strict SAFETY Standards] was to achieve proper camera angle out the cockpit and side windows from a seated position facing backwards towards the tail of the aircraft below the flight deck. It was kinda like shootin' from the hip facing the wrong direction with fairly good accuracy. My hope is this inspires ALL to support and contribute to such a valiant, honorable representation of our love and support we all share for every veteran, both young and old, with us and deceased, for their sacrafice in their fight for our freedom and liberty that many times seems taken for granted. In honor of all those who have and continue to serve such a selfless commitment for every American! _Firefighter Fire Fighter SAFETY & Efficient Hose Deployment Please go to http://www.hftfire.com and http://www.hoseroller.info ...as you take the next few moments to learn how this patented device will allow you to accomplish more in a few minutes at the end of an incident when fatigue is truly setting in and (as an option) function as a Rope Rescue Hand Winch; and/or prepare any "attack" or "hotel" or "high rise" hose extension bundle for immediate/ confined space deployment... an incredible SAFETY enhancement in which most hose loads actually prevent the execution of such basic Laws of Physics without extensive manipulation, arrangement and re-arrangement of the hose in whatever space may (or may not) be available. Yes, with the assistance of standard 2" trailer hitch receiver on the back of a pick-up truck I rolled, stacked, inventoried, and moved [over 100' of travel distance from an exterior drying rack surrounded by exposed dirt] over 3200' of 3", 2.5", and 1.75" Double Jacket fire hose back to it's storage racks/area... SOLO... but in far less time than a team of even eight (8) of us could have performed on our hands and knees as we swept the debris off the bottom side of every inch of over a half mile of hose. The funny part about this story was I told no one within my volunteer department I had performed this duty... by myself... during the first few drops of the fall/winter season's first heavy rain storm on a weekday afternoon. When all of us (volunteers) reported a week later to our next training drill, there was a feeling of great frustration as everyone realized [and assumed] we had all dropped the ball as none of us had taken initiative and the crucial time and effort to get a few of us together to remove the hose before the rain had hit... and therefore had became much too late to even hope for a few consecutive warm days to reverse the water exposure. However, upon viewing the 'empty' hose drying rack, the thought then transitioned the entire complement had been stolen... but then upon reporting to the apparatus room to inventory what hose may have remained, everyone was absolutely amazed to see every inch accoiunted for... just as "I" had left it... but my fellow volunteers had no idea and could only guess it must have been perhaps an inmate crew who were assigned this task... like a bunch of Santa's elves... to accomplish this incredibly grueling yet very necessary detail for us. You know when you know you have one over the rest of them!?! ...and it still leaves them wondering? Well, Hello! Bottom line they were all very appreciative they were relieved of this duty yet very skeptical when I stated I had accomplished this.... ALONE! After you view the remaining information at www.hoseroller.org you will always know! Yes, this hose roller is like none other because of it's patented removable Crank Handle and optional Extension Arm attachments and Rope Rescue pulley system designed to accomplish more than we ever dreamed in a configuration that will fit into a standard "baseball bat bag" and therefore, store nearly anywhere on you rig to be used both on or off the fire ground. Please note in every demonstration the roller is attached to either one (1) or two (2) small 2" X 3" X ¾" Quick-Disconnect Mounting Bracket(s) [designed for strength and durability AND yet small enough to be affixed to an apparatus bumper or standard 4" X 4" wooden post in the most remote locations on the globe] as the hose is rolled, coiled, and prepared (in a foot print area small enough to protect your crew from the harsh elements of weather) ...and then fully charged from within limited or confined space and then deployed around right angle turns on the most difficult paths to traverse. My hope is you find this informative at the very least and perhaps as an inspiration to consider the acquisition of such an incredible 'partner' in the Fire Service that will allow you to not only roll hose of nearly any size from 3/4" Peanut Line to up to 5" LDH, but deploy it in a much SAFER and more EFFICIENT manner, affect SAFE Rope Rescue Practices, and restore your apparatus to it's state of readiness with the least amount of time and effort like never before! I welcome any and all comments and feedback you feel compelled to share! It is never about us, but those we have committed our LIFE to serve! The REST of the Story! Go to http://www.hftfire.com The video, as "unrealistic" as it may appear, is simply an educational tool to present and demonstrate under extreme conditions specific Laws of Physics to make a few very simple points regarding the deployment and advancement of attack- and heavy, cumbersome exposure-lines... and especially during "unique" incident conditions: (1) Virtually any right angle turns during the "dry" hose deployment phase become irrelevant/non-issue in the same manner as deploying a "Minute Man" or similar load. Though I have always been an advocate for the superior characteristics of the "Triple Fold" configuration, we must all admit it, like all "long-tail" hose loads that force us to lay a section of hose behind our "start line," are difficult at best when circumventing multiple "turns" as I illustrated in a truly "unrealistic" manner around a parked vehicle and then the post between two (2) open bay doors to compare to any "abnormal" conditions (please use your imagination here) that may unexpectedly present themselves as a firefighter may then have a choice to traverse beyond said obstacle(s) before a line "must" be charged when adequate space may not otherwise be available for other "conventional" loads. (2) Secondly, as there are many advantages of a full shoulder load as described above, it too cannot be "flaked out" within a limited area in literal seconds without the necessary procedures which typically includes abandoning the nozzle to arrange and then re-arrange again the hose in hopes to remove each bend (unavoidable kink "engineered" into literally every "folded" hose bundle) that meets or exceeds that specific minimum critical radius in which water will then flow unrestricted to the next "engineered" bend in the hose load before finally reaching the nozzle. In literally every case the "Hoffy" load is "pre-coiled" to meet and/or exceed the "Minimum Inside Critical Diameter" in order for literally every fire hose up to 1 ¾" to function in the same manner a fully charged garden hose does for even a small child to operate at 100% nozzle pressure... literally at the water source... without ever deploying an inch of hose... Ever! The example I chose to illustrate these specific Laws of Physics is the unfortunate USFS engine that was severely "burned over" as it appears it's crew members neither had the time nor the space to deploy any pre-connected "protective" lines when this "spot fire" was perhaps first recognized and therefore may still have been small enough to mitigate by the means of additional resources (multiple attack lines) that might have been available if other "protective measures" were already in place. I am not trying to be redundant as I pursue every response, I am only trying to demonstrate a few specific laws of physics and another alternative as we establish we only fight fire with hard, round, and rigid fire hose that just happens to be flat literally moments before we step into action. In the same way we all know what happens when we fold a garden hose, I am merely trying to present we are not so much in the business of finding perhaps the best way to "engineer unavoidable water restrictive kinks" ("storage by means of folding") into our hose as we load each "pre-connect" and hose bundle on our apparatus, and not only for those within our communities whom count on us to be prepared to most effectively save lives and property, but to perhaps, with a little familiarization and training, protect ourselves more effectively as we utilize every law of physics to better prepare each length that guards us from imminent danger that facilitates both immediate deployment and ease of advancement when our man-power may be compromised and seconds truly count. I always welcome and appreciate every comment, both positive and negative, you feel is important regarding any measure but especially something that may present radical change, but please remember, when many of us as I were first trained on the proper use of "smoke ejectors," not only did we discover we didn't have to lift and invent some new and improved way to hang and shield these monsters more safely in a door way but we only missed pointing them in the correct direction by 180 degrees! No change there! Come on guys and gals, this is the third millennium... we're the high tech generation! Can open your mind just a little this direction? Again, to see the actual device that not only rolls and then prepares hose for immediate deployment, but also functions as a SAFE hand operated rope rescue winch, please go to: www.hoseroller.us I am all ears! Ride Along in CDF Air Attack 340 Paso Robles (self-narrated) Please go to http://www.hftfire.com This is one (1) 'Ride-Along' response of many that I was blessed to fly as an 'observer' [as each incident served as an excellent opportunity to supplement my collection of personal, first-hand experience 'Fire Training' videos I've created over the years] ...aboard Air Attack 340 assigned at Paso Robles Air Attack Base in California, USA. I sat in a very small back seat adjacent to several hundred pounds of radio equipment (this ages me!) in the military version of the Cessna Skymaster known as an "O-2" ...which I was the first to figure out how to configure a very simple NON-Hard Wire method to capture the full audio [Insulated from the sound of the twin engines!] that 'self-narrates' in 'Live-Time' each scene with all Air-to-Air; Air-to-Ground; and Ground-to-Ground radio communications/ operations... and of course, as you'll notice, the REQUIRED interruptions of each 'expletive' spoken on the on-board Intercom system! ...and NO! I didn't get sick as we joked as I held an oversized full VHS video camera at a challenging angle to one eye as I pointed the lens through the small weapon site on the side window as we pulled fairly good "G's" on each steep turn! ...as I maintained the proper camera angle to capture the shot at 6:30 and repeated again at 7:05. Take a moment to witness the 'wing vortices' that can actually fan a fire immediately after a drop at this low altitude. Just watch as the prevailing on-shore flow (winds) move the left wing vortices downwind (right) and over this flank as indicated by the lift and curl action of the smoke column as seen all the way down the right flank! This phenomenon can act as a double-edge sword and actually increase fire behavior if the drop is in anyway compromised or incomplete. When they joked about me getting air sick at 7:12 (as most do when they place one eye to the view finder of a camera in a steep turn), Roger Moulin (one the TOP Air-Attack pilots in the West) reached over and pulled back and opened Walt Embry's (Air Attack Officer seated directly in front of me) flight suit collar and stated, "If you have to let go, it goes right here!" Thank you God I have no middle ear issue(s) with a long list of professional aviator's in this bloodline. We Fire Fighters can be so bad... seems we always give each other so much 'shi_!' ...consistently! ...every time! NO PRISONERS! ...EVER!!! Just listen to the dialogue of the comments when we 'Buzzed' some millionaire's vacation home (just barely 'above' FAA minimums!) at 7:35 and again at 9:20! Nope! Proof to mom we really never ever do grow up! The toys only get better with 'experience!' [Age and Treachery] As 1992 was kind of a 'slow' fire season by comparative standards, we flew Bill and Dan in Tanker 03 (SP2V) overhead perhaps a little longer than conditions would usually warrant. Paso Robles Air Attack Base is consistently one of the busiest air bases on the planet which is one of the main reasons why they assigned and test-flew this first ever "variable flow" retardant delivery system which has since been further improved and become the industry standard in nearly every air-tanker flying today. I hope you enjoy this video as much as I enjoyed the actual flight! ...and many other flights I took throughout the years that followed before the California Department of Forestry [CDF now known as CAL FIRE] 'up-graded' to the much faster and more maneuverable [two (2) seat] OV-10 'Bronco.' The first in Company Officer commenced an aggressive SEARCH yet was NOT INFORMED each and every fire victim had ESCAPED to SAFETY and were tending their immediate needs in the comfort of their neighbor's home while FF/EMT Wilson did his BEST to search every room in a soon to be fully involved COFFIN before becoming trapped himself and two (2) other Fire Fighters were injured as they were UNSUCCESSFUL to rescue him from within the wind driven inferno! Think not only about what we can do to SAFELY ARRIVE! ...at ALL! ...but also what you can TEACH those in your community who rely heavily upon us whose actions can actually SAVE OUR LIVES AS WELL!!! HFT Fire Hose Cabinet - World's BEST and SAFEST! Simply the BEST and MOST EFFECTIVE Fire Hose Cabinet System EVER Invented! Have you ever taken a moment to read the instruction label on any current internationally recognized 'Pin-Rack' Fire Hose Cabinet in use today? Please note these are NOT for responding Firefighters, but rather specifically designed as intended for the immediate use of Fire Victims who are expected to utilize these lines to protect their SAFE EGRESS BEFORE we arrive! Can you believe 'THEY' [Design Engineers] direct a fire victim to 'Open Hose Valve Wide' ...FIRST!?! A completely Non-Obvious, incomprehensible instruction that the manufacturer expects and demands of a fire victim BEFORE the flat folded hose is touched let alone removed and manipulated in any manner on the floor to begin the flow of water to the nozzle! [Note a 100' foot length of Fire hose is folded up and down literally 48 times as it hangs from 24 auto-release pins!] Because every hose is affected by the same unavoidable Laws of Physics as observed when deploying a standard hard round garden hose, every 'engineered' fold then MUST BE unfolded as FAST as possible in order to make every viable attempt to flow water to the nozzle to protect an escape route! If a garden hose can be immediately utilized from a coiled configuration without arranging one inch, does it not make sense to COIL fire hose in the same exact manner to render it immediately 'Fire-Ready' as well!?! The reason most feel we would never FOLD our garden hose is that it would be totally impractical as it is already hard and round. Then why do we store our Emergency Fire Hose in a folded configuration? It's FLAT [...but only when NOT in use!] and years of long lasting thoughtless TRADITION has prevailed! Again, think about what happens when you fold your pressurized garden hose!?! It stops flowing water! What happens when we FOLD our Fire Hose!?! It also STOPS the flow of water! As you have well deduced, the 'Pin-Rack' system defies any and all logical Common-Sense application but especially during a Life Threatening Fire Emergency when Human Nature proves REACTION is the only action taken! PLUS, if any necessary complex and/or non-obvious Life-Saving measures are required, these procedures are severely compromised and suffer greatly in the wake of the expected and resulting CHAOS. Hence the requirement of 'Panic Hardware' installed on exit doors in public and commercial occupancies. Please read the 'Pin-Rack' Instruction label below. Then take a few moments to compare this illogical mandatory action to the simplicity illustrated throughout the photos of the HFT [Immediate Protection] Hose Cabinet System! A complete system that not only stands alone on any wall or post assembly [an incredible SAVINGS in hardware and installation costs!], but it can also retro-fit literally ANY existing Fire Hose Cabinet system in use today in a matter of minutes! We use the same hose, same nozzle, and same fittings! ...yet we prepare the hose just a little differently [COILED] in a box container of appropriate volume for the flat hose to be prepared and stored for FAST, RELIABLE, and CONSISTENT 'KINK-FREE' SAFE DEPLOYMENT LITERALLY EVERYTIME! Again, this is the World's FIRST ever Hose Cabinet System to allow literally any Standard 'Rack Hose' to be fully CHARGED within seconds! ...at the cabinet site! ...and with very few minor water restrictive kinks that are easy to manage once the water valve is fully open! This COMPLETE SYSTEM is ALWAYS 'Fire-Ready' for your PROTECTION TO ASSIST EVERY FIRE VICTIM SAFE AND EFFICIENT EGRESS TO SAFETY!
