The Lords My Shepherd - Inspirational hymns "The Lord's My Shepherd, I'll Not Want" first appeared in print in the Scottish Psalter of 1650. This Psalter was assembled by the Westminster Assembly, which also gave us the Westminster Confession and the Book of Common Prayer. In it, portions from various sources were combined to create the beautiful hymn we know today. Though it was well-loved in Scotland, "The Lord's My Shepherd" did not enjoy popularity outside the Church of Scotland for nearly 300 years. It finally appeared in the Methodist Hymnal of 1876 and later the Congregational Hymnal of 1916. But it wasn't included in an Anglican hymnbook until 1965. The hymn version of Psalm 23 remains faithful to David's psalm. Its popularity in England grew in part because of its use during the 1947 marriage ceremony between Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip. Since that time, it's become a well-known hymn, often requested for weddings and funerals today. And Did Those Feet In Ancient Times - Inspirational Hymns "And did those feet in ancient time" is a short poem by William Blake from the preface to his epic Milton: a Poem (1804). Today it is best known as the hymn "Jerusalem", with music written by C. Hubert H. Parry in 1916. This poem was written about the Industrial Revolution that took place duing the early 19th century. The first verse asks did Christ visit Britain. This may be metaphorical or literal. There is an old English legend that Christ came to Britain as a boy. The poet questions christianity in Britain (2nd verse) and illustrates the point by using the adjective 'satanic' when describing the industrial mills. (In the North of Britain at this time many people; men, women and children, worked in the cotton industry.) This clearly gives the impression that the poet thinks the mills are evil places. In the final two verses he poet summons up his faith and reveals he will not rest until there is justice in society. This is a beautifully written poem and is sometimes used as a national anthem. The Day Thou Gavest Lord - Inspirational Hymns During his lifetime, John Ellerton (1826-1893) wrote a large number of hymns and translations, and a glance at the index of almost any hymn book will reveal at least four or five of his works. Ellerton's contributions to English hymnody are best represented in Hymns Ancient and Modern and The Methodist Hymnbook (1933) which both include his original hymns The day thou gavest and This is the day of light and his translation from the Mozarabic Breviary of the fifth century of Sing alleluia forth. Two hymn tunes of Reverend Clement Cotterill Scholefield (1839-1904) have been set to poems by Ellerton; the hymn tune 'Irene' is often coupled with Ellerton's When the day of toil is done and on this recording The day thou gavest, Lord, is ended is set to Scholefield's more familiar tune 'St Clement'.
