The only reason there's no civil war in the West Bank is because the Israelis still maintain some peripheral control there. That's not a reason to stay -- at this time, there are other very good security reasons to have the IDF at close hand, like to prevent rockets emanating from Ramallah landing in Jerusalem -- but it's a real benefit to the Palestinians, poor people. Today, after another declaration of a cease-fire (this time unilateral by Fatah), a senior member of the Hamas military wing was murdered and a senior Fatah figure went to the great beyond, right from outside his home. Even Steven. But the totals for Monday were 17 dead and 40 injured. 40 seems to be the number every time. Maybe it's just the counters's way of saying "a lot." All of this is reported by Avi Issacharoff in Ha'aretz with the assistance of news agencies. The narrative is hard to disentangle. It is not yet clear how the fiery battles affected 24,000 high school seniors who, over the next two weeks, will be taking their final exams. But one thing is for sure: life in two hospitals was dramatically interrupted and they themselves became battles zones. Fatah gunmen fired rocket-propelled grenades and mortars into Shifa Hospital, Gaza's largest, and two Hamas men were killed on the spot. At another hospital in Beit Hanoun, three Hamas members also began their trip to heaven. Ha'aretz reports that, "Hospital authorities announced that they were suspending their work in view of the clashes inside the hospital." And what about the patients? The doctors and nurses are out for a long lunch break. Still, can you blame them? Frankly, I have no sympathy for the Hamas and Fatah terrorists who are now killing each other in Gaza. May their ranks be depleted. But I have real pity on the innocents or even the marginal and passive supporters of one or another of these miserable gangster groups who get caught in their crossfire. And, of course, by nightfall leaders of the two wings of Palestinian Murder Inc. called for calm.
