Indigenous Wars - Nicaragua January 1998 An excellent report that addresses the uncertain future for indigenous Nicaraguans as they fight against their own government and people. An 80% unemployment rate and commercialisation of the Mosquito coast has encouraged a growing trade in Crack cocaine. On a tour of the Ghettos of 'Little Miami', multitudes of brothels, crack dens and bars line the streets. The Nicaraguan government is unsympathetic to the natives pleas for land titles and autonomy of the Atlantic coast. In a desperate attempt to hold on to what is, traditionally, their land; a group of natives, the Miskit Indians, has taken up arms against the government. The authorities respond aggressively with the planting of land mines, a step contrary to an international convention, of which Nicaragua is a signatory. They were angered by the final report of the Permanent Forum, which ignored Indigenous Peoples stated concerns about carbon trading projects (REDD), Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and other so called" good pracise" initiatives. During the two weeks of the UNPFII, Indigenous community representatives testified about the injustices associated with the clean development mechanism projects and asked that the UNPFII not promote the projects. However, in the final report, their testimony was ignored. The final report of the UNPFII hails World Bank-funded carbon trading as "good examples" of partnership. Carbon trading is a system whereby companies are allowed to emit a limited amount of carbon dioxide, a gas linked to global warming. If a company does not "use up" all its carbon credits, it can sell them on the carbon market, allowing the buyer to pollute more. Companies can also buy into "carbon offset" schemes. The idea behind this is that the polluter can "offset" the carbon it has emitted by helping to finance a "clean energy" development. At first glance these ideas may seem good. However, there are many problems with this market-based approach. In promoting the clean development mechanism projects and carbon trading, the Permanent Forum is allowing oil companies, who are the biggest emitters for greenhouse gases, to continue to pollute. In other words, big corporations can buy and sell the right to pollute freely, while poor and working people—including the Indigenous peoples of the world—have no say in determining where or how much carbon should be emitted. Additionally, the allegedly "clean energy" development programs may actually cause environmental damage and have been imposed on Indigenous people against their will. Jerry Mander - Globalization and Indigenous Cultures Complete video at: http://www.fora.tv/fora/showthread.php?t=533 Author and social critic Jerry Mander discusses how the cultural concepts of indigenous peoples endure despite globalization, and speculates on the benefits of adapting these ideas to modern life. ----- In this spirited book, Jerry Mander partners with the celebrated indigenous leader Victoria Tauli-Corpuz to gather powerful firsthand reports on a momentous collision of worldviews that pits the forces of economic globalization against the Earth's indigenous peoples. With many of the planet's remaining natural resources on indigenous lands, traditional practices of biodiversity preservation have, ironically, made these lands targets for global corporations seeking the last forests, genetic and plant materials, oil, and minerals to feed their unsustainable growth. Corporate invaders often employ military force, as well as harsh pressures from the World Bank, IMF, and WTO. But native peoples refuse to be victims; their stories of resistance and growing success are gathered here by twenty-five writers to describe the impacts. Jerry Mander is founder of the International Forum on Globalization. His books include "In the Absence of the Sacred" and "Four Arguments for the Elimination of Television" - Cody's Books Tags: culture native people social cultural economic growth critic author modern adapt globalisation change fora tv fora.tv |

Canada apologises to indigenous population - 10 Jun 08 For more than a century, tens of thousands of native Canadian children were forced to attend residential schools where they were made to adopt the customs of the country's white majority. But many say they suffered years of physical and sexual abuse. Now the government is set to formally apologise and pay hundreds of millions of dollars in compensation to victims. Mexico's indigenous minority converting to Islam - 14 Mar 08 Compared to other countries in Latin America with sizeable Muslim communities, Mexico's Muslim population is tiny. In southern Mexico, the indigenous Mayan population is a minority. But another minority is being created within that group, as more and more Mayans convert from Catholicism. In Chiapas, Frank Contreras takes a look at how Islam is gaining a foothold in the region. Tags: Al Jazeera aljazeera Mexico Mayan Muslim converts Chiapas |

'Welcome to Country' Traditional Indigenous ceremony A traditional welcome to country by Indigenous elders has been held in federal Parliament for the first time, ahead of tomorrow's formal apology to the Stolen Generations. Ngambri-Ngunnawal elder Matilda House Williams says the 'Welcome to Country' acknowledges her people and their ancestors. The Stolen Generation is a term used to describe the Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, who were removed from their families by Australian government agencies and church missions, under various state acts of parliament, denying the rights of parents and making all Aboriginal children wards of the state, between approximately 1869 and 1969. The policy typically involved the removal of children into internment camps, orphanages and other institutions. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stolen_generation This is a mix from the speech and ceremony. Indigenous People There are about 400 million indigenous people in the world. They vary widely in culture, religion, social life and economic orginazation. Because of disease, distruction of thier cultural life, and open conflict many groups have been destroyed. Ninety of Brazil's 270 indigenous groups have already been destroyed. If the rights of indigenous people are not protected, many more will quietly disappear. =( the Ngobe people of Panama are in brink of distruction! The Panamanian government and an American Company are building a dam that will flood the Ngobe's territory. They have brought in police to beat protesters and are bulldozing homes. These Ngobe communities have only weeks to exist unless action is taken now. They need your help. Please visit www.culturalsurvival.org to find out how you could help. Ethnic Mexicans Are Indigenous, NOT Immigrants The purpose of this video is to illustrate that Indigenous people north of the Rio Bravo acknowledge and recognize their southern relatives as brothers and as Indigenous. What Americans DON'T want you to know is that ethnic Mexicans are SOUTHERN AZTEC while the NORTHERN AZTEC are the Paiute, Shoshoni, Hopi, Comanche, Kiowa, Goshiute, Ute, Pima, Tohono O'Odham, etc. HERE'S A COOL FACT: The Kickapoo who live in El Nacimiento, Coahuila Mexico are Indigenous to the Great Lakes and MIGRATED (not Immigrated) to their present location. Half of the Kickapoo live in Oklahoma, and half live in El Nacimiento, Coahuila. ANOTHER FACT: The Tohono O'Odham are Indigenous to both Sonora and Arizona, their ancestral lands STRADDLE the Mexican/American border, so that some are born "Native American" and some are born "Native Mexican" (but since that land was Mexico first, all the way to Oregon, they were actually NOT Native American, but NATIVE MEXICANS) I suppose that's why there's a state in the U.S. that still carries our name: "New MEXICO", or the "Gulf of Mexico" The issue is this: Americans, who are the TRUE IMMIGRANTS are calling the Mexicans: "Immigrants", but the Mexicans, who are INDIGENOUS, are in their own Homeland. Mexicans were here before Americans ever existed on this continent. In FACT, they were already known as "Mexica", a thousand years before the Americans IMMIGRATED to this land. Mexicah is the plural form and Mexicatl is the singular. Mexican is the Anglicized name of Mexicah Mexicano is the Hispanicized name of Mexicah Mexicans [me:shijka] belong to the Uto-Nahua ethno-linguistic group that stretches from Canada to Nicaragua, and that's just the Mexicans. Thats not counting the hundreds of other ethnic Indigenous people IN Mexico who are also related to Indigenous people north of the Rio Bravo, like the MAYA, TOTONACO, HUASTECOS, CHICHIMECAS, KICKAPOO, PIMA, ETC. Let's be real, if Mexicans are NOT Immigrants, then why is there such a frenzy to deport them en mass? Could it be that COLONIZATION of the Indigenous people is still occurring? Who are the Immigrants? The Americans! Don't call me a Native American, call me a Native Mexican...the name of MEXICA has been around on this continent for over 1,000 years as an INDIGENOUS NAME! THE "american" name has been used only in the last 300 years by European Immigrants as a national identity. If the Americans want to deport people who are Immigrants, shouldn't they start with themselves who crossed an entire Ocean to invade our lands? Stop deporting Indigenous people! Stop treating us like we are foreigners to our HOMELAND! We are NOT the foreigners, WE ARE INDIGENOUS! Tags: Pow Wow Mexica Aztec Indigenous Native American Not Hispanic latino Immigration Rights |
