The Myths of Innovation Google Tech Talks May 14, 2007 ABSTRACT Much of what we know about innovation is wrong. That's the bet this talk takes, as it romps through the history of innovation, dispelling the mythologies we've constructed about how we got here. This talk, loosely based on the upcoming O'Reilly book (May 2007), will help you to recognize the myths, understand why they're popular (even if you don't believe in them), and how to use the truth to help you innovate today. Innovation Survival - Innovation in Military, Warship Evolution Google Tech Talks May, 14 2008 ABSTRACT The initial reaction and subsequent adoption patterns innovative designs receive often surprise their designers. But, regardless of the care and passion any designer embeds in a novel creation, the ultimate success metric can rest on the design's intended functional effectiveness and subsequent adoption rate on the design's ultimate proving ground. With warship design, well-intentioned, but ultimately misguided, design goals and applications can result in a harsh, swift, and unforgiving annihilation of the fledgling technology embodiment, its immediate attendants, as well as it's delivery platform. It is also true that failing to adopt a timely design innovation can have the same consequence. In either case, outcomes can prove catastrophic to participants. Here, reality, not opinion provides an acid test. This presentation focuses on warship evolution and a few of its several lessons for designers in nearly all vocations. From wooden warships to today's floating steel leviathans, Warship Evolution examines design innovators, their decisions, and exogenous events that shaped today's modern warships. As the anchor rises from the seabed and lights dim, prepare to lash yourself to a sturdy mast before traversing warship design history, safely out of harms way. Speaker: David Schwaderer W. David Schwaderer is a veteran Silicon Valley executive and entrepreneur. He is presently acting as the Symantec Technology Network Editor-In-Chief where he oversees corporate data protection technology and system security technical publishing as well as a monthly newsletter distributed to 120,000 global readers. David has a Masters Degree in Applied Mathematics from the California Institute of Technology and an MBA from the University of Southern California. Whenever possible, he lectures at universities such as Stanford and MIT and immerses Silicon Valley companies in his favorite subject - innovation. David has authored ten technical books and six commercial software programs for a variety of computing architectures using several different languages. His soon-to-be-published eleventh book follows ten years of research and is titled Innovation Survival - Concept, Courage and Change. Innovation Goes Public Open Source provides much of the software infrastructure for many of the world's largest companies and organizations: Merrill Lynch, Google, Pixar, Amazon, the City of New York, and probably you - although you might not know it. Innovative products like Linux, Firefox, and Apache are the market-leaders in their sectors, but there are tens of thousands of Open Source programs, used for just about everything. But the economics of Open Source are non-intuitive: how can you make money by giving software away? Why did IBM de-emphasize AIX, after spending Billions, in favor of Linux, the product of a loose collaboration of programmers that it can never control? How can the world's greatest city trust Open Source to help manage its jails? Perens will show how Open Source is often the most effective strategy for creating and utilizing new innovation. He will explain the economics of Open Source and how it works for profit-generating companies. His talk will be clear to beginners yet informative even for Open Source pros. In addition to commercial activities, Toshiba also runs a Research & Development operation in Europe - one of a number of Toshiba's corporate-level R&D organisations outside Japan. Toshiba: Who We Are Toshiba's excellence in technology, products, systems and services, and the quality and reliability for which we are known and respected, all derive from the passion and determination that the people of Toshiba bring to the pursuit of innovation and progress. As individuals, we seek out the new and develop original concepts and expertise. We bring passion and dedication to the workplace and welcome responsibility. We are quick to decide and resolute in action. Our combined efforts inspire our customers. Our powers of innovation deliver comfort, security and affluence. Working together, we make dreams come true, contribute to richer lifestyles and to a better world. The Story of Toshiba On 18th September 1799, Hisashige Tanaka was born, the child of a tortoise-shell craftsman. From an early age he enjoyed making trick toys, starting with a clever pencil case that no one could open, however hard they tried. Hisashige's creative spirit continued and he made many other smart toys. The most famous of which 'Yumihiki Douji' - a doll which fired an arrow from a bow hitting a target two metres away, every time. Hisashige worked hard. He studied maths and astronomy and used his unique imagination to invent many things. A light burning ten times brighter than a candle. A wind-up clock keeping perfect time for over 200 days. His work even went into the field of heavy industries, where he developed steam trains, steam ships and cannons. In 1875, he established a company "Tanaka Engineering Works" which we all now know as "Toshiba". Today, individuals around the world are living Hisashige's dream, using their imaginations to turn inspirational ideas into products and systems that enhance the world we live in. The Toshiba Corporation For more than a century and a quarter, Toshiba has been a leader among Japan's largest and most energetic industrial enterprises. From power plants and bullet trains to mobile phones and sub-micron technologies, we are known around the world for our cutting edge televisions, portable PCs, DVD players and drives, and supporting electronic devices. With technologies pouring in from more than thirty separate R&D laboratories and over 300 subsidiary companies around the world, we have a towering profile and a technology leadership that has resulted in many world firsts. Despite our global reputation for R&D excellence, we work with other global brands to stay at the forefront of developments and be present in key business markets. NEC, Panasonic, SanDisk, Samsung, Sony and IBM are just some of the companies that we have recently formed alliances with. From our origins as an electrical machinery manufacturer in 1875 through to our current global, high-Technology pre-eminence, we have guided ourselves by a universal set of values that lie at the heart of our identity, 'Committed to People, Committed to the Future'. Toshiba has provided the world's fastest elevators in the world's tallest building, the Taipei Financial Center. Two of the 63 elevators are ultra high-speed, reaching an incredible speed of 1000 metres per minute - all in quiet, vibration-free comfort. In Japan we supply over 70% of the key electrics in "Tsubame", the Kyushu bullet train. Another demonstration of our wide capabilities in promoting safe, record-breaking high-speed transport. Qosmio demonstrates how we are using our computing and consumer electronics expertise to meet the rising demand for simple, personal entertainment solutions. Meaning 'my personal cosmos', it is the first of its kind, offering consumers a unique "4-in-1" experience with TV, audio, DVD recorder and PC functionality. We are actively promoting flat-panel LCD and plasma display TVs, while developing with Canon the next-generation of display for high-definition content, SED (surface-conduction electron-emitter display). Toshiba is one of the largest semiconductor manufacturers in the world, and inventor and world leader in NAND flash memory. Toshiba's NAND chips are widely used in various types of memory cards such as SD™ Card, SmartMedia™ and CompactFlash™. The company also holds more technology patents than any other PC vendor. Ranked high in the world, our power systems business will enhance its presence further in the global marketplace. Toshiba secured over 15% of the world's orders for steam turbines in 2003. Innovation at Microsoft At the Microsoft Redmond campus, five staffers from different teams got together for a chat. They talked about what it's like to work at Microsoft and dug in on subjects like career development, innovation and work/life balance. Each brought their own perspective, experience and sense of humor to show what it's really like on the inside. Meet the Panel The Gamer. Abby loves video games, running and her Smartphone. She's a Program Manager in ACES Game Studio, one of the Microsoft game development teams. She started at Microsoft as an intern and joined the company in 2003 to work as a Test Engineer—and then Test Lead—at Microsoft Game Studios on titles like Dungeon Siege 2 and Forza Motorsport 2. She graduated from UCLA with a B.S. in Computer Science. The Visionary. Blaise is a bit of a cynic, and somewhat surprised to end up at a large software company. He created Seadragon, a visualization technology used to give Photosynth its smooth digital rendering and zoom capabilities. Blaise is now an Architect at Microsoft Live Labs, a team that brings scientists, engineers, entrepreneurs, and the online community together to think about and build a better online world. Blaise graduated from Princeton University with a B.A. in Physics and attended the Ph.D. program there in Applied Math. The Entrepreneur. Dennis is a car nut who likes to "create little start-ups at Microsoft." He says, "If you have a good idea and you can convince people that it is a good idea, you can go and build that thing." Dennis is a Senior Technical Lead in the Server and Tools division, on a new team building Internet-facing, developer-focused technologies. He came to Microsoft in 2002 as a Program Manager for the Windows Workflow Foundation and Microsoft Commerce Server teams. He graduated from Simon Fraser University with a B.S. in Computer Science. The Music Enthusiast. Justin thinks Microsoft needs beds and a Laundromat at the office so he can be there when inspiration strikes. He's passionate about music and loves his crazy office atmosphere. He's a Software Development Engineer with Zune Services, the team developing the Microsoft digital music player and software. After an internship at Google, Justin joined MSN Music in 2005 and moved to Zune in 2006. He graduated from the University of Waterloo with a Bachelor of Mathematics; Honours in Computer Science. The Social Networker. Outside work, Rob is a busy guy—involved in politics, volunteering in the community, and preparing to get married—and he's constantly working to effect positive change. At work, he's a Program Manager with Windows Live, a social networking team with the mission to bring customers closer to the information and people that matter most to them. After an internship in 2001, Rob joined the Microsoft Office Publisher team as a Program Manager. He graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a B.S. in Civil Engineering and minors in Math and Computer Science. The Media Guy. Were it not for the draw of serious adventure, John would still be working for Microsoft as a Technical Evangelist. But when Yahoo! and John's friend, Richard Bangs, offered him the chance to be a field producer and photographer on projects in countries like Rwanda, Libya, Bosnia and Switzerland, he couldn't turn it down. Currently a Media Production and Technology Consultant with MediaSherpa, LLC, John has worked in the media and entertainment technology field for nearly 20 years in a variety of roles, including stints as a Technical Evangelist for Windows eHome Division and Lead Product Manager for Microsoft TV Server. http://viewmyworld.com Tags: Microsoft career job products skills entreprenuers impact recruiting |
