IPCC 4th Assessment Report on Climate Change The IPCC report comes as environment ministers prepare for the 3-14 December Bali talks, where they will be asked to agree a two-year 'roadmap' of negotiations for accelerating cuts in greenhouse gases. On current trends, it says, surging emissions of greenhouse gases will relentlessly warm earth's atmosphere, damaging ice and snow cover and causing the oceans to expand and thus rise. The impacts could be "abrupt or irreversible". In such a scenario, humans would face wide-ranging misery in the form of crop failure, storm damage and ill health as drought, floods, cyclones, mosquito pests and water-borne disease become more frequent or intensive, it adds. Climate Change 1of12: The IPCC and Prior Climate Predictions Playlist for this lecture: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vyuKOtIryis&feature=PlayList&p=0C2FA8A9E3BB59FF&index=0&playnext=1 Lecture by Professor Richard Muller of the University California, Berkeley. Taken from Lectures 20 and 21 of the spring 2008 webcasts of Physics For Future Presidents. Also known as Descriptive Introduction to Physics. Emphasis is on conceptual understanding, rather than mathematics. This lecture deals with the physics of climate change, the data on global temperature and carbon dioxide changes, and some potential solutions. Also covered are the many mistakes that can be made, including the trap of exaggeration. He warns against the danger of cherry picking and overstating the case. When people discover that the exaggerated case is not valid, they may dismiss the problem altogether. Professor Muller has researched this topic for many years and has co-authored a book with Gordon MacDonald called "Ice Ages and Astronomical Causes". The reports of the IPCC are referenced much during this lecture. The full IPCC reports can be found here: http://www.ipcc.ch/ipccreports/assessments-reports.htm This lecture can also be found here, along with many other lectures: http://webcast.berkeley.edu/course_details.php?seriesid=1906978515 Tags: physics temperature greenhouse effect global warming carbon dioxide co2 ipcc charles keeling |

IPCC climate change The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the UN's top expert authority on global warming, said in its report Friday that up to 30 percent of animal and plant species will be vulnerable to extinction if global temperatures rise by 1.5-2.5 C (2.7 F to 4.5 F). Andrus Public Affairs Center at Wesleyan. Location: Princeton University Date: May 7, 2008 More: Gary Yohe discusses methods for estimating of the costs of climate change and the role of uncertainty, and proposes a strategy for how the IPCC's climate change mitigation group should approach the next assessment.
