Sri Lanka Army troopers opened fire at a peaceful demonstration march by Jaffna University students and staff, wounding at least seven demonstrators including Prof. N. Perinpanathan, a Senior Lecturer, and a student leader of the medical faculty T. Kandeepan. Professor C. Mohanadas, the Vice Chancellor of the Jaffna University, Prof. R. Sivchandran, Dean of Arts, and S. Kajendran, Jaffna MP were severely beaten by the soliders. The demonstration march from Jaffna University towards the Sri Lankan Monitoring Mission (SLMM) did not proceed beyond Parameswara Junction where the troopers began firing at the demontrators around 11:00 a.m. Monday. Tension prevails in the area. Why did Tamils in Sri Lanka want Tamil Eelam ? Sri Lanka, which was renamed in Sinhala in 1972, had been called as Ceylon by British during colonial times. Before 1833, the Tamil people were under different administration. They had their own kingdoms, culture and language which are very different from those of Sinhalese until 1505. The first colonial invasion took place in 1505. British brought Tamils and Sinhalese under one administration in 1833 and called this new colony as Ceylon. When the British left in 1948, the 20% Tamils were left with 80% Sinhalese within a unitary country where the decisions were taken by democratic parliament system. Under this system, racially polarised Sinhalese and Tamils were ruled by the constant majority of Sinhalese against the democratic wishes of Tamils as Tamils were the constant minority. The silent protest by the University society, expressing solidarity with thousands of displaced people in Vanni, comes after a long period of time marked with targeted annihilation of protesting voices in Jaffna. Univefrsity of Jaffna, Silent Protest Academics, staff and students of the University of Jaffna on silent protest "We express our deep felt sympathy and support to the thousands of Internally Displaced Persons in the Vanni mainland and our strong condemnation against the Sri Lanka Government for continually unleashing severe military and aerial offensives on the people of Vanni," the President of Jaffna University Students Union (JUSU) said in his introductory speech at the beginning of the protest which began at 10:00 a.m. "The Jaffna University society is observing this silent protest, at a time when freedom of speech and freedom of expression are denied to the residents of Jaffna peninsula," the JUSU representatives said. Thousands of people, driven out of their settlements in Vanni by the relentless artillery barrage and air strikes, are suffering in makeshift shelters under trees and along the streets besides being denied food, medicine and other essential goods. The Sri Lankan government has suspended all communication with Vanni including phone connections, postal service. Jaffna Tamils in Thousands celebrate Pooneryn victory 20/11/2008 Tamil civilians enraptured by the recent liberation of Pooneryn by the Sri Lanka Army today (Nov 21) held a grand street celebration over the victory. About 10,000 civilians marched in the streets of Jaffna town for about 3 hours period in a jubilant mood, shouting patriotic slogans, displaying banners, placards and waving national flags. According to our special correspondent in Jaffna, a large group of civilians gathered at Gurunagar around 9 AM and commenced the celebrations. The civilians then wended their way along the streets of Jaffna while thousands of others took to the street joining them. Later , some 10, 000 civilians were seen parading on the streets in Jaffna, our sources said. The crowd returned to Gurunagar around 12 noon and dismissed after expressing gratitude for the security forces members for opening a land route to the Jaffna peninsula after 20 years. The sources said members of the Jaffna Traders Associations, Fisheries and Fishermen's Associations, Co-operative Movement Associations, Samurdi recipients, Private Bus Operators and members of different Trade Unions were the main organizers of the mammoth demonstration. Darkness at Dawn - Short Film by Jaffna University Students Darkness at Dawn - Short Film by Jaffna University Students Tamil Eelam is the homeland of Tamils living in Norther and Easter part of Ceylon (Sri Lanka) administered by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). Tamil Eelam is comprised of Northern and Eastern provinces of the island Ceylon(Sri Lanka). Tamil Eelam is currently a de-facto state in Ceylon(Sri Lanka) run by LTTE. The LTTE has implemented a judicial system that consists of courts to adjudicate in criminal and civil matters. Currently the Tamil Eelam judicial system consists of district courts, High courts and Supreme court as well as a court of appeal. The district courts handle civil and criminal cases. The two high courts handles criminal cases such as rape, murder, treason and arson. The supreme court has jurisdiction over the whole of Tamil Eelam. The Tamil Eelam courts are said to be effective [48] and people who have a choice sometimes go to the Tamil Eelam courts rather than the Sri Lankan courts. LTTE has also established a police force. The Tamil Eelam police is the other key factor in maintaining law and order. The Tamil Eelam police was formed in 1991 and currently has its headquarters at Killinochi.[29] Police stations have been established in all areas that are controlled by the LTTE. The LTTE claims that their police force is the reason for the low crime rate but critics of LTTE claim that the police force is an integrated arm of the LTTE armed force and that the crime rate is low as a result of LTTE authoritarian rules. However, everyone agrees the Tamil Eelam police force and the judicial system is reason for high degree of rule of law in the areas controlled by the LTTE. Another state function of the LTTE administration is social welfare. This humanitarian assistant arm is funded by tax collection internally .[48] [50] [49]. LTTE has also established an education and health sector that offers services to the people under their control. [29] They have also created a human rights organization, called Northeast Secretariat on Human Rights, that functions to advocate the rights of Tamils. Though not recognized by international government it acts as a human rights commission. Furthermore, a customs service is also operated at the "border" by the Tamil Tigers. In addition to the civil administration LTTE also runs its own radio and television stations. These entities are named the Voice of Tigers and National Tamil Eelam Television respectively. Both the radio and television channel are aired from the areas under LTTE control. [50] [55] LTTE also runs a bank named the Bank of Tamileelam which uses the Sri Lankan rupee as its currency but offers higher rates than any bank on the island. A 45 day Naval miracle at Myliddy - Jaffna(Sri Lanka NAVY) The SL naval engineers made a spectacle of construction work as a part of its extended humanitarian mission, constructing a pier in a short expand of 45 days in Jaffna. The 'Mailaddi pier' that was reconstructed by the Sri Lanka Navy in 45 days will be facilitating the unloading of goods transported to the North. Even though the real issue is not 'hunger', it is still the responsibility of the Government of Sri Lanka (GoSL) to ensure that the needs of the people are met. As such, 40 Lorries of Sri Lanka Army are used for distribution purposes. With the closure of the A-9 road due to LTTE terror attacks, essential food items for the people of Jaffna were ferried by ships with the facilitation of the Sri Lanka Navy. Continuous supplies were ferried under the "Jathika Saviya" programme with the guidance of the senior advisor to the President Mr. Basil Rajapakse and the Commissioner of Essential Services. In order to avoid the delays in loading and unloading of goods at the two harbours in the Jaffna peninsula, a third harbour, the Mailaddi port which was damaged in the tsunami has been identified and developed to handle cargo operations. The development of a third harbour for the Jaffna peninsular surfaced subsequent to an inquiry made by the Senior Advisor to the President, Mr. Basil Rajapakse from the Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral, Wasantha Karannagoda. Following the Navy Commander's proposal to develop the Myliddy port, the Sri Lanka Navy was tasked to carry out its restoration work. The Navy has completed the restoration work of the Myliddy harbour within a short period of 45 days. The Myliddy port is in operations currently. According to reports the first consignment of essential items to the Jaffna peninsula was unloaded at the Myliddy pier yesterday(07). A third port for the Jaffna peninsular in addition to the Point Pedro and Kankasanthurai harbours will boost the Jaffna economy. According to a recommendation by Mr. Basil Rajapaksa, the Ministry of Nation Building has granted the Sri Lanka Navy Rs. 3 mn for the restoration of the Myliddy port. Civil engineers of the Navy along with sailors completed work on the Jetty and other restoration work in the harbour. Having received the support of Jaffna civilians to dredge the harbour mouth, the Navy was able to complete work of the Myliddy port by 2nd February 2006. The Naval Commanding Officer of the North, Rear Admiral S.R. Samaratunga ceremonially inaugurated the operations of the Myliddy port on the same day. The Navy in collaboration with the Ports Authority is overseeing the operations of the Myliddy port. Since the inauguration of the Myliddy port, cargo vessel MV HIND M has unloaded 31, 90 and 125 tons of essential food items and goods on 2nd, 3rd and 04th February 2007 respectively. The Government Agent of Jaffna with the assistance of the Army had made arrangements to dispatch these food items by lorries for distribution among the people.
