Australian Drummer - Chris Brien - " MOZAMBIQUE - Foot Snare Solo" AUSTRALIAN DRUMMER CHRIS BRIEN - MOZAMBIQUE - Foot Snare Drum Solo. Recorded live at Beat Industry, Tuggerah, New South Wales, Australia on 7th June 2008. PATTERN BREAKDOWN: (Part 1) RIGHT HAND: I am playing what I call the "One-Hand Songo Technique" which is the basic rhythm that is usually played between both hands when you play a Cuban based Songo. I am playing this between an 8" tom (which is attached to my right-side Hi-Hat stand) and my main snare drum. RIGHT FOOT: I am playing the Mozambique cowbell pattern on my right hand side foot cowbell and then I simultaneously add with the heel of my right foot a rhythm on my right hand side jamblock pedal. LEFT FOOT: I am playing the remainder of the Mozambique pattern with my left foot between my left hand side bass drum and Hi-Hat. I then play "off-beat" 1/8 notes on my Hi-hat with my left foot and then add "downbeats" on my left bass drum pedal to create an 1/8 note groove with my left foot. LEFT HAND: I am playing improvised melodic ideas between toms and my main snare drum. PART 2: RIGHT FOOT: I am playing the Mozambique cowbell pattern while still simultaneously playing the rhythm on my heel between my right hand side foot cowbell and foot jamblock. LEFT FOOT: I am Playing 1/8 notes between my Hi-Hat, Bass Drum and Foot Snare to create a straight rock beat. PART 3: LEFT FOOT: I am still Playing 1/8 notes between my Hi-Hat, Bass Drum and Foot Snare to create a straight rock beat. RIGHT FOOT: I am playing improvised patterns on my right hand side bass drum pedal to create interesting bass drum grooves. HANDS: While all of this is going on with my feet I am simply improvising on different patterns with my hands using hi-hats, cowbell, toms, main snare and congas. Playing such rhythms as the Mozambique, an inverted Cascara (left hand) against the Mozambique cowbell pattern (Right Hand), triplets, etc,etc. I finish off with a "Funky Type Groove" with my feet while striking the China cymbal on the count of 4 of each 2nd bar of the phrase. Please note that this was a totally improvised solo with the exception of the first 30 seconds..... Enjoy. "CUBA TO BRAZIL" Pattern Breakdown: (First section - Cuba) A Mozambique rhythm being played with the feet. Right Foot: Playing the right cowbell with heel strikes on the (orange) jamblock. Left Foot: Between the left hi-hat and the left cowbell. Right Hand: Songo hand pattern (Usually played with two hands). "I call this the "One Hand Songo Technique". Left Foot: The toes of my left foot are playing Quarter Note Triplets on my left foot cowbell whereas the heel of my left foot is playing inverted Quarter Note Triplets on my left foot jamblock.
