The Four Tops/James Jamerson - Bernadette (Bass playalong) Just got a new P-Bass, so here's a quick take of James Jamerson's classic line on "Bernadette" by the Four Tops. This is a really fun tune - I'm still sort of finding my voice on the P-Bass (never owned one before) but I'm digging it. It's a Mexican standard P with D'Adarrio flats into an Avalon U5 (no EQ) to a 4-channel mixer and directly into the line in of my MacBook. Definition of a Slow Jam (James Jamerson, 1969) The music industry has gotten away from glorifying the "slow jam". Today, corny ballads pose as slow jams, but they leave out one important component: the jam! In essence a slow jam is a down-tempo love song that still maintains a prominent (even muscular) bassline and solid drum beat, with some degree of attitude attached. Jamerson Bassline - Grapevine - Gladys Knight - mic test Quick playalong to test the p-bass mic'd up to the PJB suitcase with flat EQ and no limiting/compression on the recording (at least before youtube mashes it up in processing). These are Rotosound Jazz flats on this bass - I like the high tension but they have a different tone to LaBellas. And Jamerson's original? Well, I might try to do a closer copy than this one day - the original must have amazed and inspired bass players all over the world when they 1st heard it in '67/'68. This is one of many examples why Jamerson laid the foundations for Jaco, Bootsy and countless others - in fact, he put the walls up and half the roof, too.
