Cy Twombly "Blooming" at GAGOSIAN GALLERY James Kalm once again goes undercover to bring viewers unauthorized video of Cy Twombly's latest exhibition of paintings, "Blooming: A Scattering of Blossoms and Other Things". With this collection of recent paintings Twombly has encouraged his most lyrical expressions. Despite having lived in Europe for the last fifty years, Twombly still holds a major place in postwar American painting. Lynda Benglis, Louise Bourgeois CIRCA 70 at CHEIM & READ James Kalm sneaks in at the end of the opening for this historical show. Between them, Bourgeois and Benglis encompass the foundations of modern Feminist sculpture. Each derives a unique yet shared sense of form from rich sources that include the erotic, the phallic, and the organic. Bourgeois received her initial attention for work that was a personal response to Surrealism and has at the age of 96, become an example of artistic perseverance. Richard Prince "Spiritual America" at the GUGGENHEIM MUSEUM James Kalm is pleases to bring viewers exclusive unauthorized footage of this major exhibition. Richard Prince's style is one of the most recognizable in contemporary art. Since the late seventies, with his series of appropriated advertising photos, most notably the "Marlborough Man" images, Prince has used his particular perspective to critique American culture. Much of the resonance of the work comes from his recycling and redevelopment of previous motifs repeated, like his bawdy joke lines, until they become self-referentially antonymous. Luc Tuymans Forever at DAVID ZWIRNER James Kalm slips in for a Thursday night opening of the renowned Belgian painters Luc Tuymans. With this latest group of works, Tuymans is exploring the corporate myth that is Disney and its concomitant cultural hegemony. With his low-keyed color, wane execution, and focus of obscure tangential subjects, Tuymans presents a vision apparently numbed by an overstimulation of visual saturation. These paintings track "the transformation of entertainment into ideology" in which "an uneasy sense of nostalgia pervades."
